Chapter 57: Chapter 56: Nine Schools Competition Departure Day 4
The venue, under Defense Force jurisdiction, complicates police involvement. Toshikazu, off-duty but carrying his badge, was relieved the Juumonji presence smoothed questioning. First High's tech staff guided traffic post-accident, preventing chaos. The wrecked car sat roadside, the driver's upper body covered with a bus blanket.
Toshikazu fretted over another issue when Inagaki appeared. "Boss, 15-minute delay."
"Reasonable, with the competition looming. Doesn't feel like an accident," Toshikazu said.
Their presence stemmed from the Mitsuya patriarch's request to guard First High. Delayed departure let them trail the bus, proving fortuitous. The Chiba family sent Erika for Nine Schools support and promotion, with Toshikazu, Inagaki, and elite members assigned by Mitsuya and Kamiizumi. Shuji, Toshikazu's brother, joined as external staff.
"Unscathed jump, really?" Inagaki asked.
"No brake marks, minimal guardrail damage, and paint scrapes? Suspicious," Toshikazu replied.
Normal instinct would prompt braking, but no traces existed. The car's minimal damage suggested magic—likely sabotage against First High.
"Targeting just First High, aiming for a third consecutive win?" Inagaki mused.
"Likely. Other schools report nothing similar," Toshikazu confirmed.
It screamed interference to prevent First High's victory, but further investigation was for higher-ups, especially with "His Excellency" at the venue.
"With a jinx like you around, trouble's unlikely," Inagaki teased.
"Don't say that in front of the athletes," Toshikazu pleaded, eyeing the bus.
Inside, the chaos settled, but unease lingered. Facing a near-fatal incident left its mark. Mayumi, who slept through the initial panic, addressed the team.
"Everyone okay? Thanks, Juumonji."
"I was just backup. Mitsuya, Shiba, and Mutsuzuka coordinated perfectly," Katsuto said.
Yugen nullified the psion storm, Miyuki extinguished the fire, and Toya redirected heat to slow the car—all without interference. Katsuto praised their synergy. Yugen's [Gram Dispersion] went unquestioned; some, aware of his Phalanx-breaking feat, assumed he could disrupt standard spells.
"Thanks, you three. Impressive magic," Mayumi said.
"It's thanks to Rinne-senpai's deceleration spell," Yugen said.
"Exactly," Miyuki agreed.
"Thanks, Rinne-senpai," Toya added.
Rinne nodded silently. Kanami gaped over her seat, stunned. Mari, equally shocked, reasoned the bus's braking distance required magic assistance. Rinne's quick judgment, Toya's foresight, and the trio's coordination showcased terrifying talent.
"You, though!" Mari snapped, smacking Kanami's head.
"Ouch! What was that, Mari-san?" Kanami protested.
"First-years like Morisaki get a pass, but a second-year like you stirring chaos? You know random magic causes interference. Not canceling it shows poor judgment," Mari scolded.
"Sorry," Kanami mumbled.
Calm judgment was key, but geniuses like Kanami struggled. Mari suspected Yugen, Toya, and Miyuki, all Ten Master Clan or close, had faced worse.
"Toya, you predicted the car's jump. Saw something?" Mari asked.
"Briefly… a magic sequence," Toya whispered.
His words reached Tsugumi, Kanami, and Yugen's sharp ears. Something more likely caught Toya's eye. Mari frowned thoughtfully; Mayumi, about to probe, was interrupted by news the bus was ready to move.
Post-accident, Toshikazu and Inagaki's help limited the delay to 30 minutes. With the initial late start, they reached the dorms past noon. Nine Schools often launched military careers, so the Defense Force supported it fully, providing a hotel used for foreign officers and officials for students and staff. As a military facility, no porters or doormen existed; students handled luggage, though heavy equipment stayed on the tech vehicle. Small tools and CADs were carted for tweaks.
First-year tech staff, including Tatsuya, worked while chatting with three peers. Hattori, spotting them, turned away but was stopped by Kirihara.
"What's up, Hattori? You don't look confident," Kirihara said.
"Just… shaken," Hattori admitted.
"Competition's in two days!" Kirihara noted.
Kirihara competed in Cloud Ball on day two, Hattori in Battle Board on days one and three, and Monolith Code on days nine and ten. His doubt could jeopardize First High's overall win.
Hattori, a top second-year behind the third-year trio, worked hard despite his Bloom elitism. Kirihara knew he wasn't one to waver easily.
"What's eating you? Don't want a submission hold from the former president," Kirihara teased.
Hattori recalled Mika and biathlon OGs' grueling training. "The accident…"
"Was dicey," Kirihara agreed.
"Could've been fatal."
"No one died. Worrying about 'what-ifs' is pointless," Kirihara said, balancing optimism with concern for competition focus.
"I did nothing," Hattori confessed.
"Better than making it worse. Shows restraint and judgment," Kirihara countered.
"But Mitsuya, Shiba, and Mutsuzuka acted perfectly, knowing their strengths. That let Juumonji cover the rear," Hattori said.
"Differences in skills. Shiba's sister excels at cooling, Mutsuzuka at acceleration. Mitsuya's spell-breaking was wild," Kirihara replied.
Hattori stopped, Kirihara's analysis sinking in. "It's not just magic strength. Losing to a younger girl in magician qualities shakes me."
"It's experience," Kirihara said. "Those siblings are exceptions. The brother? He's killed."
"What!?" Hattori gasped.
"Not firsthand, but his aura—April's incident," Kirihara said.
Hattori knew little of the terrorist attack, only that Mayumi and Katsuto handled it. Kirihara, present, elaborated. "Shiba's brother radiated a killer's aura, like my dad's navy buddies. The sister's got guts to keep up."
"And Mitsuya?" Hattori asked.
"First High's 'Untouchable.' A different kind of terrifying," Kirihara said.
"Meaning?"
"Shiba's killing intent is palpable. Mitsuya's? Undetectable, like an assassin's. My dojo master called it a master-level feat," Kirihara explained.
Yugen's Shin'nyoryu training with Miyuki showed unmatched skill. Kirihara lightened the mood. "Imagine the President hearing you admit magic isn't all about power—she'd love it."
Hattori, flustered, stormed off. Kirihara followed, chuckling. "Bloom, Weed—it's just entrance exam results. Plenty of second-coursers shine, especially this year's first-years."
Kirihara eyed four first-years, sensing Toya and three others carried unmatched potential.
