Chapter 283: The Chaos of Liberation
[ Third Person POV ]
Mariejois
Dragon raced across the Holy Land looking for conscious slaves to set free. The Bondolas had already been destroyed thanks to the efforts of Ju Peter and Marcus Mars. It would have been useless for him to go back to Red Port and try to get his soldiers to help him.
Moreover, it would have been consuming way too much time in the window of opportunity that had suddenly presented itself.
With all the residents of Mariejois unconscious, he had the opportunity to try and free as many slaves as he could. Ideally, he would have had the help of the freed slaves to help him free more slaves, but it was going to be a challenge to find any slaves that were still conscious after the surge of Conqurer's Haki.
Moreover, since Ken was responsible for finding Ginny, Dragon had much more breathing room to achieve this goal. His first stop was going to be the slave dungeons that were normally kept near the Figarland Family Manor. This was mostly where the World Nobles would have the opportunity to purchase slaves without having to leave the Holy Land.
As a result, this was where the majority of slaves were often kept in captivity after doing forced labor for the day. Since it was daytime, Dragon had expected that the slave dungeon would have been emptier than it would have normally been at night.
He eventually managed to reach the slave dungeon. Sure enough, the guards who had been responsible for guarding the doors had already passed out. However, the doors leading to the slave dungeons remained locked. Moreover, these doors were created with a mixture of seastone and very strong metals. Making it impossible for Devil Fruit users to break through the doors with their abilities.
Dragon immediately began searching the unconscious guards for a key. When he found one, he immediately used it to open the doors leading into the prisons.
It was dark inside the dungeon; the slaves weren't even given a torch in order to see during captivity. Dragon's nose cringed as he smelled nothing but body odor and the faint smell of dead corpses.
This was no way for anyone to live, yet these slaves spent their entire lives there.
Dragon used his Observation Haki to better understand the situation within the dungeon. The only thing that they had been given was a small opening for the sake of ventilation. Dragon guessed that even the soldiers of Mariejois had grown tired of smelling the stench of captivity.
"Can anyone hear me? I'm here to get you guys out," Dragon announced to the dark room.
He did this to see whether he could sense any movements around him.
"To think it would be a human who would be offering salvation," another voice echoed from the darkness.
"Indeed, I am here to liberate you from your wrongful captivity," Dragon replied as he turned to where he sensed the voice.
"Are you the humans who've been breaking into Mariejois to free us? I'm not sure whether I should trust you....we've never really heard from the ones you've freed," The voice asked curiously.
"I'm not asking you to trust me; I merely want to release you from your captivity," Dragon replied as he slowly walked over.
The closer he managed to get closer to the voice's source, the more he could sense the voice's presence. It only got bigger the more he closed in on it.
"Hm, if you merely wish to free us. Then please do," the voice replied as he moved a little to draw Dragon's attention.
Eventually, Dragon reached where the voice was. He fiddled with the cuffs a bit before eventually releasing the chains. There was no torch nearby that would have helped Dragon identify the voice properly. So, he could only assume that the voice was simply a non-human being.
"Freedom at last...how nostalgic!" With that, the voice let out a roar that shook the entire dungeon.
What the voice did was probably what Dragon needed. Almost immediately, Dragon could feel different presences begin to rouse from their stillness. Soon after, he could already begin to hear silent murmurs and whispers around him. This indicates that a majority of the slaves who had been knocked out before were awake.
"I'm here to liberate you all! However, I can't do this alone, please help me in liberating the slaves of Mariejois!" Dragon requested.
"I'll help you with this. Although I may not trust you, it doesn't look like your intentions are ill-willed," the voice chimed.
Dragon could only nod, and they both immediately got to uncuffing the rest of the slaves free.
Eventually, after a lot of groping around the darkness, they managed to free most of the slaves who had been cuffed up.
Meanwhile, the ones who were still locked up were being helped by the ones who had just been freed, one key was only available to them at the time, so they had to be reasonable with how they would share the key to free the rest.
Dragon, satisfies with how things were progressing, stood up and walked towards the door he had broken into to get into the dungeon.
He was then promptly greeted by the wakening guards who he'd found passed out previously. He wasted no time immediately knocking them out before they realized the severity of the situation. He widened the door and allowed the light to enter the dark dungeon, causing everyone's attention from within the dungeon to turn towards it.
"Hurry," Dragon said, " from here on out, we'll be running on a limited clock until World Government reinforcements arrive. Hurry and try to free as many people as possible. They'll be some passed out guards around who probably have keys, find the keys and help free your comrades."
The slaves wasted no time flooding out of the dungeon and dispersed as they looked for friends, family and loved ones that they had wished to be seen freed.
Dragon had a small smile on his face as he saw them leaving with excited expressions.
A hand gently rested in his shoulder.
"It's good to finally see the face of my liberator," the voice that Dragon had first talked to when he entered the dungeon remarked.
Looking at him, Dragon finally noticed that this was a double-jointed Fishman.
"My intentions remain the same. You should hurry and free your brethren before it's too late," Dragon replied.
"What about our escape?" The double jointed Fishman asked.
"Meet me where the Bondolas are supposed to be, I'll help you all escape," Dragon replied.
"Very well, I'll be seeing you shortly," the double jointed Fishman replied before he walked away to help other slaves.
Dragon made sure that every slave within the dungeon had escaped before heading towards his second target, another slave dungeon that had happened to be next to Pangea Castle.
Although it wasn't as big as the Slave Dungeon near the Figarland Family Manor, it was an exclusive dungeon that was reserved for major families. This was where the most attractive and useful slaves were kept for the picking.
However, it also had some of the more dangerous slaves in there as well.
As he raced towards Pangea Castle, on top of the Figarland Family mansion, an old man stood on top and watched Dragon making his way to Pangea Castle. His face was expressionless, but the way he gripped the cane that he was leaning on indicated that he was not happy.
