The Villain Professor's Second Chance

Chapter 341: The Research Opportunity

Amberine, rubbing her tired eyes, muttered under her breath. "I swear, if Draven keeps this up, he'll drive us all insane. I can't believe he made us sit through that after the midterm."

Elara, ever stoic, walked beside her with her arms crossed, her expression unreadable. "We learned more in that one lecture than in an entire semester. Don't act like you didn't find it useful."

"I know, I know," Amberine groaned, flipping her messy red hair out of her face. "But could he at least pretend like we're human? I haven't slept in days, and Ifrit keeps sparking up like a nervous candle."

The fire spirit beneath Amberine's robe gave a faint flicker of warmth, as if in agreement. She'd been too tired to even notice his agitation. Maris, walking on Amberine's other side, offered a small, sympathetic smile. Her usually soft demeanor had hardened since the last few months of training, but her kindness remained.

"I didn't even realize it was possible to control emotions that precisely," Maris said, more to herself than anyone else. "But now I understand… why Draven does what he does. It's terrifying but brilliant."

Amberine snorted. "Terrifying is right. I'm just glad we're done for the day."

Just as the trio began to relax, thinking they were free to collapse into their beds, they heard a familiar voice calling out from behind them. "Amberine. Elara. Maris."

They turned, and standing in the corridor was Professor Astrid Spellforge. Distinguished and commanding, she had an air of sharp intellect about her, with long silver hair tied neatly in a braid and a robe adorned with elemental sigils.

Professor Astrid specialized in Elemental Theory and Magical Research Integration, and while she wasn't as cold as Draven, she was known for being strict and deeply invested in pushing her students to their limits.

Amberine groaned inwardly. "Oh no. Not her. Not now."

Elara gave Amberine a side-eye, but her own exhaustion was clear in the slight slouch in her usually perfect posture.

"Professor Astrid," Maris greeted politely, though the fatigue in her voice was impossible to hide.

Astrid's sharp blue eyes scanned the three of them, her gaze lingering briefly on each one before she spoke. "I couldn't help but observe your performance in the midterm exams," she said, her voice calm but firm. "Your results, particularly on the final question, were… unique. I'm impressed."

Amberine blinked, completely caught off guard. She'd expected some sort of critique or lecture on how they'd barely scraped by, not praise from someone as exacting as Astrid.

"I also stayed up all night to finish Draven's exam three days ago," Astrid added with a smirk, surprising them further. "It gave me inspiration for something important. Which is why I wanted to talk to you three."

The trio exchanged glances. Amberine raised an eyebrow, Elara remained still, and Maris tilted her head slightly, curious but wary.

"Talk to us?" Elara asked, her tone neutral but laced with suspicion.

"Yes," Astrid said, crossing her arms as she looked at them with a measured intensity. "I have an opportunity for you—one that could benefit not only your academic careers but also your future in magical research and practice. If you're willing."

Amberine, still too tired to hide her cynicism, scoffed lightly. "Opportunity? Professor, I'm barely keeping my eyes open right now. What kind of opportunity are we talking about?"

Astrid's lips curved into a faint smile, but her tone remained serious. "You'll want to hear this. Come to my office after class, and I'll explain."

The three students hesitated, unsure of what to make of the invitation. Astrid wasn't the kind of professor to waste time on frivolous projects, but the timing couldn't have been worse. Elara was the first to nod, her calculated mind already weighing the potential benefits.

"Fine," Amberine grumbled, "but if this turns out to be another all-nighter, I'm setting something on fire."

Amberine, Elara, and Maris sat in Professor Astrid's office, their fatigue momentarily pushed aside by curiosity. The office was filled with shelves lined with ancient books and magical artifacts, the air humming faintly with elemental energy. A large desk sat in the center, and behind it, Astrid leaned against a tall chair, her sharp eyes studying the trio as they settled into their seats.

"I won't waste your time with pleasantries," Astrid began, her voice steady. "Your performance on Draven's final question showed an exceptional understanding of emotional magic, something I believe could be further expanded. That's why I'm proposing a collaborative research project."

Amberine's brow furrowed. "A research project? On what, exactly?"

Astrid nodded. "The final question of the exam—'The Convergence of Magic and Emotion.' The three of you demonstrated a rare depth in your ability to fuse emotions with spellcraft, and I believe we can take this further. With my guidance, we can turn your midterm results into a research paper worthy of submission to the upcoming magical symposium."

Elara's eyes narrowed slightly, her sharp mind already considering the implications. "You want us to present our findings on emotional magic at the symposium?"

"Not just present," Astrid clarified, her tone firm. "I want you to push the boundaries of what we currently know about emotional magic. This isn't just a showcase of your talents; this is about developing something groundbreaking—something that could redefine how we understand the relationship between emotions and magic."

Maris's eyes widened, her empathy for the subject growing stronger. "You're saying we could contribute to the field itself? Not just in theory but in practice?"

"Exactly," Astrid replied. "I believe that with the right research, we could develop a framework that allows for the controlled infusion of emotions into spells, amplifying their power while maintaining stability. The three of you could collaborate on this project, each bringing your unique abilities to the table."

Amberine frowned. "You mean like the midterm? You want us to work together on creating a new spell based on emotions?"

Astrid shook her head. "Not just a spell—an entire system. I have been working on an orb, a project of mine known as the 'Orb of Curiosity.' It's a magical device designed to observe and channel emotional energy, but it's still in its early stages. With your help, we can refine it, using your understanding of emotional magic to improve its capabilities."

Elara, ever the strategist, crossed her arms and leaned back slightly in her chair. "This orb—what does it do exactly?"

"It maintains equilibrium between raw magical output and the emotional state of the caster," Astrid explained. "But it's not perfect. The orb can help regulate emotional fluctuations, but it lacks the nuance to fully harness the potential of emotions like fear, anger, and determination in real-time spellcasting.

I believe the three of you could help me refine its design, using the framework of emotional convergence you demonstrated in your exam."

Amberine, now slightly more interested, tapped her fingers on the armrest of her chair. "So, you want us to take what we did on the midterm and apply it to this orb? What's in it for us?"

Astrid's smile returned, though it held a calculated edge. "Besides contributing to the advancement of magical research? You'd be listed as co-authors in the symposium presentation and any publications that follow. This would not only bolster your academic reputation but also give you an edge when you face your ascension tests from Neophyte rank. The experience alone could be invaluable."

The room fell into a contemplative silence. Amberine, Elara, and Maris exchanged glances, each weighing the offer. It was clear that this wasn't just a favor Astrid was asking of them—it was an opportunity, one that could set them apart from their peers. But it would also be a tremendous amount of work, and none of them were exactly thrilled at the idea of more sleepless nights.

Elara was the first to speak. "What kind of timeline are we looking at?"

Astrid leaned forward slightly. "The symposium is in three months. That gives us enough time to refine the orb's design and present our findings. But make no mistake—this will require dedication. It won't be easy, but the reward will be worth it."

Maris bit her lip, her empathetic nature urging her to accept. "It sounds like a lot of work, but… I think it could be worth it. If we can contribute something meaningful, I'm in."

Amberine sighed, leaning back in her chair. "Looks like I won't be sleeping anytime soon. But… fine. If it means we'll actually get something out of this, I'll do it."

Elara nodded, her mind already strategizing the best approach. "I'm in as well. This could be the breakthrough we've been looking for."

Astrid's eyes gleamed with satisfaction. "Excellent. We'll start tomorrow. I'll provide you with the current data on the orb, and we'll begin our first round of experiments next week."
