The Villainess Must Die... Again?

Chapter 21: Chapter 21: The Shadow Consort

"To rule is to command the shadows as much as the light."

—Seraphina Von Aurelian, First Flameborn Queen of the Reclaimed Throne

It had been a week since I had claimed the throne yet it still felt as though the weight of the crown hadn't fully settled on my head. Every day, the responsibilities multiplied. New letters arrived, some of them claiming my attention, others demanding it. The rebellion in the western provinces simmered, as did the unrest among the nobility, even as they pretended to pledge their fealty.

I had dismantled the Flame Council dissolved it, in fact and restructured the empire's governance into a more efficient system of checks and balances, but the moment I closed my eyes, the ghosts of my past reign whispered. The impostor's face, my own face, still haunted my dreams.

I stared into the mirror in my chambers that evening. The reflection staring back at me was the same except for the new crown, a humble gold circlet etched with runes my personal seal marking my claim. It felt heavier than it looked. I wasn't just a ruler. I was the savior of the Empire, or its ruin depending on which faction I consulted.

"A queen of flame and ashes," I whispered to myself.

Kael arrived at my chambers that evening. His expression was unreadable, as it often was, but I could see the conflict in his eyes.

"There's word from the southern borders," he began, his voice steady but strained. "Adrian's forces have retreated, but not entirely. They seem to be gathering at a safehouse. He's biding his time."

I nodded, my fingers absentmindedly tracing the edges of the crown. "He won't give up. Not until he sees the Gate fully opened or fully closed."

Kael shifted his weight, looking as though he was struggling with something unsaid. "That's not why I'm here tonight, Sera."

I raised an eyebrow. "Then why?"

He stepped forward, producing a sealed letter from his cloak. His family's sigil, the Virelion crest, gleamed in the dim light.

"A messenger arrived with this earlier," he said, handing it to me. "It's from my father."

I took the letter with a mixture of surprise and caution, unsealing it. The contents were straightforward, but no less shocking:

"To my son Kael, and to Seraphina Von Aurelian, the Flameborn Queen. The throne is yours, but there is something you must understand. I offer you the title of Consort. A Virelion shall stand beside you by your side in public and private, to guide your reign with wisdom, strength, and power. We offer our loyalty, our wealth, and the power of House Virelion. Take it, or we withdraw our support."

I looked up at Kael, whose expression had hardened into something unreadable. He was waiting for me to react, but there was an undertone in his silence that unsettled me.

"I assume this is what you were expecting?" I asked, though my voice trembled slightly despite my effort to remain calm.

He met my gaze, his jaw clenching. "I knew it was coming. But I didn't think they'd throw it at us like this. The Virelion family believes in power through unity. But they don't know what it means to truly serve someone else, Seraphina."

I could feel the tension between us grow. There was more to his words than he was letting on.

"But you do know what it means to serve," I said softly, more to myself than to him. "You've stood by me when others faltered. You've sacrificed too much already."

Kael's eyes softened. "And I would sacrifice again. But this this is not something you should shoulder alone."

I stood up slowly, staring at the letter. "This isn't just about power, Kael. It's about control. They're offering me their power offering you as the price for their loyalty."

His words hit me harder than I expected. I clenched my fists. "And you? What will you do?"

We stood in silence for a moment, the tension thick between us. I knew what Kael was trying to say he had no interest in the title. But I also knew what it meant for me. To accept the Virelion offer was to bind myself to their family. It was not just about power or status it was about loyalty.

Loyalty to a house that had once betrayed me, even though Kael had no part in that betrayal.

I turned to him, unable to mask the vulnerability in my voice. "Do you think it's worth it, Kael? To let them have you by my side like this?"

Kael's gaze softened, and for a moment, I saw something flicker in his eyes regret, perhaps. "I think you have to decide what you want to be, Sera. You don't need the Virelions to rule. But this offer might give you what you need. What we need. Unity in the court. Strength in the provinces. The Empire won't fall if they believe you are firmly backed by the old powers."

I swallowed the lump in my throat. "What do you want, Kael?"

He took a step closer, his voice low. "I want you. I want to stand by your side, Seraphina, no matter the cost. But I don't want you to make this choice because you feel like you have to. If you choose to take the Virelions' offer, it must be because you want it not because they demand it."

I could feel my heart race, but I said nothing. I wasn't ready to make this decision not yet. But I couldn't avoid it for long. The pressure was mounting. The Virelions were powerful. Their backing could change everything.

The next few days passed in a blur of strategy meetings, royal decrees, and whispered threats in the shadows of my court. Kael was still by my side, but the weight of the decision hung over us like a storm cloud. He was distant, though I could see the turmoil in his eyes whenever our gazes met.

I found myself in the grand hall again, poring over documents when one of my advisors a younger nobleman from the Eastern territories approached me, bowing low.

"Your Majesty," he said, his voice tentative. "There's word that House Virelion plans to align with the church should you refuse their offer. They believe your reign will be unstable without a Consort to guide you."

I stiffened, my hand tightening around the parchment. "And what does that mean for me?"

"Your reign will be questioned," he said carefully. "The Virelions hold great influence over the military and trade routes. Without their support, your throne could be under siege before winter."

I stood up abruptly, my thoughts racing.

The court would never accept me without the Virelions especially not after the chaos of the impostor's reign. House Virelion was one of the oldest, most respected houses in the Empire, and their backing was crucial if I hoped to solidify my rule.

But Kael was not a pawn to be used by another house.

"Thank you," I said to the advisor, who bowed again and left me alone.

I was torn. The decision was not just about politics. It was about Kael and me our bond, our trust, our future.

That night, I met with Kael once more in my private chambers. He stood by the window, staring out at the darkened city below. His silhouette looked almost like a shadow, his features softened by the dim light of the moon.

"I can't make this decision for you, Sera," he said, not turning to face me. "But I can promise you this I'll stand by whatever choice you make. Always."

I approached him slowly, my heart heavy with the gravity of the situation.

"You deserve to have a choice in this too," I whispered, touching his arm.

His eyes met mine, and there was something in them something I couldn't quite name. Something that made my heart ache.

"I'm not asking for a title," Kael said, his voice rough. "I'm asking for your trust. Your love. That's all I need."

I swallowed the knot in my throat, feeling an overwhelming sense of both fear and relief.

"Then we'll make this choice together," I said softly. "No matter what happens, Kael. You and I. Together."

As I walked through the halls toward the royal courtyard that evening, a letter arrived from House Virelion.

They had given me their ultimatum.

Accept the title of Consort. Or lose their support forever.

The choice seemed simple but I knew it wasn't.

I couldn't let Kael be a tool in someone else's game.

But I couldn't risk everything we had fought for.

And so, I made my choice.

To accept the offer. But on my terms.
