Chapter 7: The Catcher in the Rye
· · ────── ꒰ঌ·✦·໒꒱ ────── · ·
A crappy worldview! A messed-up power system! Overdramatic character plots!
And don't even get her started on those never-ending flashbacks! One after another, dragging on for years, and yet the main story isn't even halfway done!
These feelings of frustration had only grown stronger since she arrived in this world.
As someone who was just a spectator, she was now being forced into this ridiculous drama! It was absolutely absurd!
The tree branch under Hinata's foot let out a strained creak as she launched herself forward. Her breath was slightly ragged, but she finally slowed down. At her top speed, it had taken her less than ten minutes to reach the waterfall, far from the academy.
And as if responding to her arrival, an arm suddenly shot out from the water, grabbing onto the rocky edge and struggling to pull its owner onto land.
Naruto's body trembled uncontrollably. Getting slammed into the water from a hundred-meter drop—this was a full-body impact. His entire figure looked swollen, the bruises on his arms and cheeks starkly visible.
[That idiot! He actually…!]
Just from taking in the scene, Hinata immediately understood what had happened. Without a doubt, this reckless blonde moron had actually done it—he had jumped off a cliff. The only difference was that he had chosen this waterfall instead. And the result? Predictable failure. Now, he was left with mild internal injuries, a battered body, and pain in every inch of his flesh.
Hinata almost jumped down to yell at him, but her steps froze.
Right. She had no reason to scold this idiot. Because that was just the kind of person he was. Even when everyone laughed at him, rejected him, or even hated him, he never gave up. He kept moving forward, gritting his teeth, pushing past it all—until he truly became the greatest ninja in this village.
"Ugh!!"
Clicking her tongue, Hinata turned away and sprinted in another direction. Over at the Uchiha district, there was another idiot just like Naruto.
It didn't take long for her to find Sasuke's current situation. With her Byakugan, the inside of the house was perfectly clear—he was gasping for air in a room littered with makeshift battery packs, a crude electric chair setup in the center. The pain of electrocution must have been making every bone in his body scream in agony.
[So he's using an electric chair, huh? A stupid method, but the effort is the same.]
Hinata wasn't surprised by Sasuke's determination. If Naruto was already throwing himself into reckless training, it was no shock that his 'rival' was pushing himself just as hard.
But that uncomfortable feeling in her chest—it sharpened again.
Yes, she had deceived both Naruto and Sasuke. But that wasn't what angered her.
What infuriated her was this: their effort had exceeded her expectations. No, it had surpassed even her own.
It was as if she, the 'superior' one, the all-knowing outsider who had come into this world, was being outdone by two mere anime characters?!
Hinata had pushed herself beyond limits others wouldn't dare to reach. Her life in these past two and a half months had been the embodiment of suffering. Her fingers had broken over and over again, only to be healed in scalding medicinal baths. The pain she had endured—it couldn't even be put into words. And because of that suffering, she had built a heart of steel.
Pain was unbearable. But pain was also power.
Because she believed her suffering surpassed others, she could stand above them with unwavering strength. And the effort she poured into enduring that pain—that was proof of her value and strength.
And now? Naruto and Sasuke were moving forward, enduring pain greater than her own, growing even faster.
"You've got to be kidding me… You think I'm gonna lose to you two?"
A cold smirk crossed her lips as she turned and left the Uchiha district. The fire in her chest was raging. Was this ridiculous world really trying to tell her that her pain and suffering weren't special? That anyone could do it? That her struggle was meaningless?
Bullshit! She'd like to see for herself—could these so-called 'main characters' really keep going?
The anger burning inside didn't cloud her mind; instead, it made her thoughts even clearer. Rather than returning to the academy, Hinata headed straight for the Nara family's medicine shop, where she usually bought her herbal remedies. Shikamaru was still in class, so the one running the store at this hour was his father, Nara Shikaku.
"Well, well~ If it isn't Hinata-san? What brings you here at this time? Shouldn't you be in class right now?"
Nara Shikaku, chewing on a toothpick, was clearly familiar with Hinata by now. Though he had asked the question, he still took the time to check: "Got hurt again? Here to buy medicine?"
"Ah~ Sorry, Shikaku-ojisan, but I need to place an order for some herbs at your shop."
Taking out her wallet, Hinata spoke decisively: "A remedy for electrical burns, another for bruising and swelling, and finally... one more for regular burns."
Like other pharmacies, the Nara Medicine Shop also provided a service where they brewed the herbs into ready-made medicinal solutions for customers. After all, not everyone had the time or patience to prepare them on their own. Of course, this service came at a price.
"Huh? Hinata-chan, did someone at home get hurt? These three types of medicine can be prepared, but..."
Shikaku looked a little surprised. Normally, when Hinata came to buy medicine, it was always for herself. But this time, she asked for three different types, each for different kinds of injuries. Something was definitely off.
"As long as you can make them, that's enough. I'll leave the money here. I'll pick up the medicine tonight."
Not in the mood to chat any further, Hinata left the pharmacy. She had something else she needed to do.
With enough money, everything became easier. In just half an hour, she had gathered everything she needed—though it wasn't much. Just a large furnace and a cartload of coal.
"Hmph~ Let's see whose determination lasts the longest."
Reaching into her ninja pouch, Hinata pulled out a scroll. The words on it read: [Nantou Flame Killing Fist]. Without a doubt, this was the third Nantou Seiken scroll—the one she had completely made up. The one she had written for herself.
Back then, she had never planned to train in something so ridiculous. But now... she was curious. If all three of them—her, Naruto, and Sasuke—followed the training methods she had created, who would be the first to break?
She dumped the burning hot coals from the furnace onto the ground, creating a five-meter-long path of glowing embers. Casually, she tossed the scroll into the fire, watching it turn to ash. The training method was in her head. She didn't need the paper.
"Nantou Flame Killing Fist Training Method: Walk on burning embers while doing a handstand until your hands no longer burn."
Looking at the scorching-hot path in front of her, Hinata smirked. "Interesting. This might be even more fun than Exploding Point Strike."
Throwing off her jacket, Hinata took a deep breath, then placed both hands on the ground and flipped into a handstand. Even from a short distance away, she could feel the intense heat radiating from the embers. It was enough to cook raw meat. If a person placed their hands on it, it would be one of the cruelest punishments imaginable—pure agony.
"Let's see how much pain I can take!"
Biting her lip, she focused all the chakra she could into her hands before pressing them down onto the burning coals.

As the sun slowly set, the people of Konoha went about their peaceful lives, unaware that anything unusual had happened today. If there was one thing different, it was that the weather seemed a bit hotter than usual.
Naruto hobbled toward his apartment, leaning on a wooden stick for support. He had spent the entire day at the waterfall, but no matter how many times he tried, he still couldn't jump across. After repeatedly being smashed into the water from a hundred-meter height, his body had long gone numb. He couldn't even feel the pain anymore—just exhaustion.
"Haa... man, this is rough... but I won't give up..."
Muttering words of encouragement to himself, Naruto turned a corner. And that's when he saw someone waiting for him.
Hinata was leaning against the utility pole in front of his apartment, arms crossed, her face slightly pale. Both of her hands were wrapped tightly in bandages. At her feet were three paper bags, each giving off the distinct, bitter smell of medicinal herbs.
"Hinata? What are you doing here?"
Scratching the back of his head awkwardly, Naruto felt embarrassed. After all that big talk about being the first to master Seiken, now he looked like this—completely beaten up.
Hinata uncrossed her arms and stepped forward. Before Naruto could react, she suddenly drove her knee into his stomach.
"GAH!"
Already unsteady, Naruto let out a pained grunt and collapsed onto the ground. He struggled, but couldn't get up immediately.
"What the hell, Hinata?!"
Glaring up at her, he demanded an explanation. But Hinata only smirked coldly. Did he really have to ask?
"Obviously, I'm beating you up. Isn't it obvious?"
Squatting down, she grabbed Naruto by the head with her bandaged hands, her voice low and firm. "Look at my hands!! These burns are from training Nantou Flame Killing Fist! You seriously thought you could outwork me?!"
"Shut up! I'm training hard for the Kazuki Fist too! I'll master it for sure! And I'll become Hokage!"
Naruto shouted angrily at the white-eyed girl in front of him. His reaction was exactly what Hinata had expected. That stubborn, blond knucklehead never gave up until the very end.
"Hmph! Fine!"
Letting go of Naruto's hair, Hinata turned and picked up one of the three paper bags. These medicine packets were prepared by the Nara Pharmacy, filled with high-quality herbs. Since the main ingredients were expensive, their effectiveness was guaranteed.
"This is an herbal remedy for bruises and swelling. You have to drink it all in one go tonight! The medicine will make sure you can continue training tomorrow!"
She tossed the bag in front of the dumbfounded Naruto and turned away, adding one last sharp remark.
"That way, when you lose to me, you won't be able to blame it on unfair treatment!"
Ignoring the shocked expression on Naruto's face, Hinata picked up the other two bags and walked away. Besides her own burn medicine, she also had a special remedy for electrical burns—meant for that idiot Sasuke.
Yes, this was how it should be!
I'll make sure the conditions are fair! And then... I'll prove it to you both!
No one's hard work surpasses mine!
You two—Naruto and Sasuke—have always relied on your family names and natural talent. You're nothing but cowards who hide behind privilege!
With that thought, Hinata smirked coldly.
I'll bet my pride and my dignity on this! I'll take those two brats on—head-to-head!
Let's see who can reach the top with pure effort alone!

At the end of every action, results will always follow. This is one of the basic truths of fate.
Half a month had passed in the blink of an eye. The peaceful atmosphere of Konoha remained unchanged. Yet, beneath the surface, hidden from the eyes of ordinary villagers, some were pushing themselves to their limits for the sake of the future.
"Tch!"
Wiping the sweat from her forehead, Hinata scowled at the path of burning coals in front of her. Just moments ago, she had walked across it while doing a handstand. Aside from a little soot, her palms were fine—nothing like the charred, peeling flesh she had suffered when she first started training two weeks ago.
Back then, she had to rip away layers of burnt skin from her hands every single day. The pain was unbearable. But now?
She looked at her palms, a mixture of frustration and pride swelling inside her. She could hardly believe she had actually endured such a ridiculous training method to the very end. It had cost her two whole weeks of precious time. Worse yet, she had spent nearly all her savings.
Aside from a small amount spent on coal, nearly eighty percent of her money had gone into medicine. The Nara family's herbs were top quality, but they were ridiculously expensive. And because she insisted on keeping things fair, she had even covered the costs for Naruto and Sasuke's medicine too.
And what did she get in return? Well, at least now she could gather chakra into her hands and touch burning coals without feeling pain. It wasn't just because of chakra control—her once delicate, pale hands had toughened up. They no longer looked like a young girl's. Instead, they resembled the rough, hardened hands of a laborer.
"So much for my original plans... everything's a mess now."
Standing up, Hinata frowned in frustration. She slammed her palm against a nearby tree, wishing it were Naruto or Sasuke's head instead.
Her original goal had been to finish filming Fox's Tale in these two weeks while also improving her Exploding Point Strike technique until she could pierce solid rock. But thanks to a moment of reckless stubbornness, she had let Naruto and Sasuke train for half a month without interruption. She had also neglected her own progress in Exploding Point Strike. And in the end? All she had to show for it was completing this absurd training.
"Either Naruto and Sasuke's idiocy is contagious, or I've completely lost my mind."
Muttering bitterly, Hinata made up her mind—no more free medicine for those two idiots. First, she'd check whether they had actually completed their training. If not, she would mock them relentlessly. If they had, then she'd drag them back to finish filming immediately. At the very least, she needed to make back the eighty thousand ryo she had spent!
But just as she was about to leave, something caught her eye. She glanced at the tree she had just slapped, and her footsteps halted.
The trees in Konoha were valuable, often used for high-quality lumber. The one she had hit was a rare hardwood—so tough that even shuriken barely left a scratch. Yet now, there was a clear palm print embedded in the bark.
Hinata's eyes widened.
Without a doubt, this was the mark Hinata had just left in her moment of anger. The handprint on the tree was about four millimeters deep, and its color had a faint burnt yellow tint, as if it had been scorched by flames.
"...Could it be?"
Hinata's eyes narrowed slightly. Leaving such a deep and clear imprint on solid sandalwood wasn't just about raw strength. Sandalwood had an incredibly high ratio of hardness to elasticity—if the force wasn't concentrated enough, even if it was strong enough to leave a mark in theory, the tree's elasticity would absorb most of the impact.
That meant Hinata's strike had already surpassed both the elasticity and hardness of the sandalwood. Normally, only a heavy iron hammer could barely achieve this.
Turning around, Hinata adjusted her stance, took a breath, and swung her right hand again, striking the tree with a loud smack. Another handprint appeared on the solid trunk—this time, it was nearly a centimeter deep! Since she was even more focused than before, the imprint was even clearer.
There was no mistake. This was the result of completing the initial training of Enshouken—Flame Destruction Fist.
To prevent burns, her body had already adapted to gathering chakra in her palms. And because she had been constantly touching scorching hot coals, her fire-natured chakra had naturally surfaced. After all, the best way to avoid being burned wasn't just to resist heat—it was to make her own body hotter than the thing that could burn her!
And all of this... was carved into her very flesh and blood through extreme pain. The human body naturally fears pain, so it memorized the method to resist burning. It had instinctively learned how to generate power against it.
"I see... No matter what I say, my method was right all along—endure pain and overcome it. That is the true path to gaining strength!"
Understanding this, Hinata lowered her head slightly, but then her body started trembling. A moment later, she burst into uncontrollable laughter.
"Pfft—hahahaha~~ Yahahahaha~! This is hilarious~! So this is what they call the fruits of hard work?!"
Her laughter came to an abrupt stop, and her eyes turned sharp and cold.
"Now! It's time to check on those two idiots and see how much they've learned!"

As a young girl in her early teens, Haruno Sakura naturally had a heart full of romantic dreams. Like nearly every girl in her class, the one she admired was none other than the coolest and most handsome boy of their entire year—Uchiha Sasuke.
It wasn't just because she was lovestruck. Uchiha Sasuke had plenty of qualities that made him attractive to girls his age. Handsome looks aside, he consistently ranked first in every exam, and he had never once gotten in trouble at school. With such an excellent reputation in both academics and behavior, it was no surprise he was so popular.
However, in the past two weeks, this superstar's reputation had taken a hit. The reason? He had started skipping class.
Yes, and not just for an afternoon—sometimes he was absent for the entire day. Even though his test scores remained excellent, skipping class was still considered a serious problem for students their age.
Naturally, quite a few girls began to distance themselves from him. This made Sakura happy because it meant fewer rivals, but at the same time, she was annoyed at those girls for being so shallow. Did they really only care about appearances? Did they not even stop to think why Sasuke was skipping class? He must have been dealing with something difficult that he couldn't talk about. And since he had no family left, this must be an especially hard time for him. What he needed now was a kind and understanding girl to be there for him!
And that~! That was the perfect chance! If she could be the one to comfort Sasuke's wounded heart, he would definitely realize that she was the one who truly cared about him. Then, he would finally understand that she was the best choice for him!
With that thought, Sakura became so excited that she could hardly contain herself. She struggled between acting reserved and fantasizing all night, and by the next morning, she had dark circles under her eyes. In the end, she gave in to her feelings for her crush. After carefully fixing her hair, picking out her best outfit, and making a bento using the best ingredients from her fridge, she set off on her mission—her heart pounding with anticipation.
The Uchiha clan's district wasn't hard to find, but since it was located in a more secluded area, it had almost no connection with the rest of the village. On top of that, ever since the night of the massacre that wiped out the entire Uchiha clan, rumors had spread about the place being cursed, so hardly anyone dared to go near it.
If Sasuke hadn't started behaving so strangely, Sakura wouldn't have had the courage to visit a boy's house on her own. But now that her crush might be suffering in silence, she couldn't just sit back and do nothing.
Following the map through several streets, Sakura finally caught sight of the Uchiha estate. She took a deep breath, debating whether she should practice what to say first. Should she speak softly and gently?
"Sasuke-kun, I was really worried about you~ so I came to see you~"
Or should she be cheerful and encouraging?
"Sasuke-kun~! Don't worry! No matter what happens, I'll always support you~!"
"Ahh~! So embarrassing~!"
Blushing, she covered her burning face with her hands. Just as she was about to step forward, a teasing voice called out from nearby.
"Ara ara~ Wide Forehead, what a surprise~!"
Thud! A massive stress mark appeared on Sakura's forehead. She didn't even need to turn around to know who it was. Gritting her teeth, she spun around and shot back, "Oh, look who it is! The Ino-pig! What's the matter? Did you wander out of the mountains to sunbathe today?"
Standing a short distance away was a beautiful girl with fair skin and blonde hair—someone with a distinctly Western look. She was none other than Yamanaka Ino, Sakura's classmate and greatest rival!
"Hmph! I don't have time to argue with you today~! I'm here to check on poor Sasuke-kun. Once he eats my special homemade bento, he'll definitely feel better~ You, Wide Forehead Gorilla, can just step aside~!"
Proudly flaunting the beautifully packed bento in her hands, Ino's goal was clearly the same as Sakura's. This made Sakura scoff.
"Too bad for you~! I also made a nutritious homemade bento! Sasuke-kun will definitely choose mine!"
"No way! He's choosing mine!"
