Chapter 402: 403. Growth and the Battle Ahead.
Even though Allen had anticipated it, he still underestimated the effect of the Scurver Heart Essence.
If the Rotfiend Heart Essence was like a moldy sock wrapped around a rotten egg, the Scurver Heart Essence felt more like hydrochloric acid mixed with pure hydrogen sulfide.
Not only was it foul-smelling, but as the essence slid down his throat, the intense burning and corrosive sensation spread from his throat down to his stomach.
To be honest, if it weren't for the Witcher's Journal being a bit too dark, though never posing any real threat to his life, Allen would have suspected the essence wasn't just an elixir, but a highly potent poison without any disguise.
Urgh!
His stomach churned.
Allen leaned against the wall, unable to stop gagging. It took a good two or three minutes before he finally calmed down.
Then, a scorching heat flowed through his body, eventually retracting to the heart area, where his mutated organ responsible for storing magic resided.
And then...
There was nothing more.
"Strange?"
Though he felt a bit weak, Allen leaned against the wall, feeling the subtle changes within his body. Something about it left him with an odd sense of incompleteness.
He focused his mind and opened his personal stats panel.
[Name: Allen]
[Age: 14]
[Title: Son of Miracles]
[Level: 66]
[Health: 100%, Stamina: 640/640, Mana: 800/800]
[Attributes: Strength 73 (+3), Agility 64 (+3), Constitution 61 (-2), Perception 85, Mysticism 84 (+4)]
[Affinity: Water 13 (Mana Source·Water 3%), Earth 13 (Mana Source·Earth 3%), Wind 10 (Mana Source·Wind 0%), Fire 10 (Mana Source·Fire 0%) (+2), Space 2]
He had gained eight attribute points, with a slight loss in Constitution compared to the Rotfiend Essence.
As an advanced creature above the Rotfiend, the Scurver's essence provided a noticeable increase, not to mention the additional two points of Fire affinity.
But...
"Why is there no noticeable change now that all four affinities are above ten?" Allen scratched his head in confusion.
It wasn't that he expected a major transformation.
He hadn't really thought that reaching these thresholds would cause a huge change. He wasn't expecting to instantly become a Mana Source like Vilgefortz and Hen Gedymdeith. A lack of change was something he could accept.
But...
It felt wrong somehow.
Allen scratched his head again.
Right now, he felt like when you're about to sneeze, and the feeling builds up, but when you go to sneeze, it just disappears, leaving a lingering uncomfortable sensation.
"What's going on?"
He paced around the small room, walking over the floor worn white from shoe prints, irritated as he turned around in circles.
"Forget it, let's keep improving..." Allen suppressed the urge to growl out loud.
Even though he didn't know whether what was hidden within his body was a surprise or a shock, the army to fight the Dark God had already set out an hour ago, and they would soon be marching up the mountain.
He didn't have time to waste on this slight discomfort, especially since it wouldn't affect his actions.
[Do you wish to use Alghoul Heart Essence2?]
The cold liquid immediately surged down his throat.
As it slid through his esophagus, it was absorbed by the inner walls, soothing the lingering burning sensation.
Before it could even reach his stomach, it transformed into a hot stream that spread throughout his body.
[Attributes: Strength 77 (+4), Agility 64, Constitution 65 (+4), Perception 85, Mysticism 84]
[Affinity: Water 13 (Mana Source·Water 3%), Earth 15 (Mana Source·Earth 5%) (+2), Wind 10 (Mana Source·Wind 0%), Fire 10 (Mana Source·Fire 0%), Space 2]
The weakness caused by the Scurver Essence disappeared, but that vague feeling of oddness seemed to be intensifying.
Hoo~
Allen took a deep breath and gritted his teeth.
[Do you wish to use Alghoul Heart Essence4?]
[Attributes: Strength 80 (+3), Agility 64, Constitution 68 (+3), Perception 85, Mysticism 84]
[Affinity: Water 13 (Mana Source·Water 3%), Earth 18 (Mana Source·Earth 8%) (+3), Wind 10 (Mana Source·Wind 0%), Fire 10 (Mana Source·Fire 0%), Space 2]
The strange sensation increased again, but it still hadn't "sneezed."
However, it wasn't without result. Allen found the source of the odd feeling.
Next to his heart, the unique mutated organ of the Witcher, just like the heart beside it, was beating. Although faint, each beat radiated a subtle aura of magical energy.
It was as if something was gestating within this mutated organ.
"What's it gestating?"
Allen used his Witcher senses and the Wolf's Medallion to observe, but all he could feel was the overwhelming surge of magic, like a river swelling with power.
A minute passed.
No matter how much he used his magic to stimulate it—casting Quen, Aard, Axii, or even the Heliotrop sign—there was no change...
"Forget it, it doesn't affect normal combat..."
Allen stretched his limbs and noticed that aside from the strange feeling, there were no other negative effects. He decided to put it aside for now.
[Inventory: Alghoul Heart Essence 1, Ghoul Heart Essence 32, Rotfiend Heart Essence 33]
Including the eight doses of Alghoul Heart Essence he had already used at the Kaedwen border, each dose of two essences had previously increased his strength and Constitution by six points. Now, it only added one point.
The heart essences of smaller magical creatures, like the water ghouls, had a maximum effect of 20 doses.
For larger monsters, it was likely capped at 10.
But Allen didn't plan to test it now. He would save this last dose of Alghoul Heart Essence for Vesemir, as tonight, they were likely to hunt a few more Alghouls, whether Vesemir liked it or not.
He had already used the full 20 doses of Ghoul Heart Essence.
As for the Rotfiend Heart Essence, which reduced Constitution and increased fire affinity, it was clearly not suitable for use at the moment.
Knock, knock, knock~
The wooden door was suddenly knocked on.
"Captain Allen, it's time as you requested." Erni's voice came from outside.
"Got it!" Allen responded.
Since he had never used the Scurver Heart Essence before, he worried that dizziness or unconsciousness might occur, delaying things.
"It's time to leave!"
He quickly checked Elsa, Balmur, and the flasks of sword oil and magical potions before opening the door.
Not only had Erni stayed after his reminder, but the other young Witchers were also fully geared, standing at the door, hesitating to speak.
"This time, no," Allen said, his gaze sweeping over the seven Witchers, gently shaking his head.
"Captain, after the last mistake with those treacherous male witches, we've all learned from it," Clay pushed forward anxiously. "We've been practicing swordsmanship and signs diligently, we definitely won't let ghouls slip by us this time..."
"Clay, shut up!" Claral's face darkened as he shoved Clay's small head back.
They were here to ask for battle, not to talk about letting ghouls slip by.
"Only you and Aeas let the ghouls slip," Specer quickly chimed in. "Captain, I really can kill ghouls."
Slap~
Even Erni, the default leader of the young Witcher squad, couldn't help but facepalm.
After carelessness and lack of strength, now they had internal strife and no unity.
"This time, it's really not possible," Allen said firmly, shaking his head again.
No battlefield was one that these seven young Witchers could involve themselves in right now.
There wasn't even enough room on the big griffin to carry nine Witchers, and the intensity of the battle near the Dark God's ritual was beyond what they could handle.
As for Ianna, without Allen and Vesemir nearby, it was hard to say whether the young Witchers would be more helpful or more of an obstacle. For them, still immature and prone to impulsiveness, it was also extremely dangerous.
Of course, saying things like "brewing necrophage oil for the front lines" wouldn't work as an excuse.
These young Witchers were only twelve or thirteen years old, and they didn't have that big-picture view.
Seeing Erni and Claral's downcast expressions, Clay and Specer's little eyes darting around, Allen thought for a moment and said: "The monsters from a monster's lair can't all be wiped out in one night, so..."
"If you can produce three hundred doses of necrophage oil tonight, tomorrow I'll convince Vesemir to bring you along to help exterminate the ghouls..."
"What's the point of ghoul creatures? The Dark God has already been killed by Captain Allen and Vesemir..." Specer muttered loudly.
"Do you have that much confidence in us?" Allen said with a mix of amusement and exasperation.
"The Drowner King, the Archgriffin, the Wraith, the Cat School Witchers, those despicable sorcerers... Captain Allen has never lost!" Specer raised his head high, slicing the air with his right hand, speaking decisively.
It seemed that as long as Allen appeared on the battlefield, it meant victory.
Then, with his small eyes shining like those of a young puppy, he looked at Allen in a pleading way, his face clearly showing he wanted to be taken out for some fresh air.
The other young Witchers also nodded eagerly.
'I don't have that much confidence in surviving the hands of the Dark God, even though so much preparation has been made, even with the help of the temple, the sorceresses, and the Ellander army...' Allen sighed inwardly.
"That still doesn't work," he denied, not waiting for the Witchers to complain, "If when I return, I don't see three hundred doses of necrophage oil, your trip down the mountain is over."
"Don't doubt my abilities, Tissaia, the dean of Aretuza, is a friend of Lady Vera, I'll ask her for help and open a portal to Kaer Morhen..."
As soon as he finished speaking, the seven Witchers exploded with immense frustration.
"Alright, hurry up," Allen waved his hand, walking toward the door, "Three hundred doses of necrophage oil isn't a small number, if you keep pestering me, I'll make it three hundred and fifty."
Only then did Erni and Claral pull the others away.
After all, three hundred was manageable, but three hundred and fifty was truly close to their limit. They could make necrophage oil, but not every Witcher could proficiently make a batch of necrophage oil in half an hour.
Phew~
After sending the young Witchers off, Allen exhaled deeply and walked out of the house.
The bright moon hung high, and the cold moonlight filtered through the clouds, casting across the rising buildings.
Tonight, the temple was unusually quiet. Aside from the priests who had to stay behind to care for the injured and pregnant women, most of the priests had been taken away by Ianna.
Perhaps it wasn't just the priests.
After the news of the Dark God's arrival spread, the noblewomen and the families of the wealthy merchants staying in the temple were likely busy fleeing Ellander.
Thinking about the ones fleeing, Allen remembered Specer's words from earlier.
In fact, it wasn't just Erni and Specer who had so much confidence in him.
Otherwise, why would Lysa have given him the amulet?
Why had Ianna eventually compromised and refused to listen to his and Vesemir's plans?
Even Vesemir was like this.
At the beginning of the year, when they first came down the mountain, he would have never allowed Allen to get involved in such matters.
But after the Witcher attack from the Cat School, he had worked hard to persuade Vesemir to let him go alone to follow the clues found in Viscount Hudson's castle.
Now, Vesemir even went against the Archpriestess Ianna's arrangements at Melitele's temple, actively supporting him in carrying out dangerous ideas and plans that would require his life as a price.
Even those who might have stayed due to his deeds and the favor of the Goddess—ordinary people who he didn't even know about...
Phew~
After traversing the steep, rugged mountain path, Allen arrived at an open space backed by towering mountain rocks.
In the clearing stood another dark, imposing figure.
"Let's go, good girl."
He climbed onto the Royal griffin's broad wings and gently patted its neck.
Kaak~
A wild wind whipped up sand and dirt, making the birch trees rustle.
Watching the dark, blue-tinged Mahakam mountains growing smaller and smaller, as if a crouching giant, Allen focused his thoughts.

The flood of information came like a roaring tide, wave after wave, giving Allen a headache that felt like his brain was about to burst.
After a long time, he finally snapped back to reality from his painful and dizzy state.
Kaak~
The Royal griffin let out a worried cry.
"Good girl, I'm fine." Allen reassured it softly, then opened his Monster Hunt notebook.
[Special Skill Points: 3]
[Experience Orbs: Experience Orbs 2, Small Experience Orbs 2]
"Back to square one..."
Allen smiled wryly, closing his eyes. After his brain's pounding subsided, he looked sideways.
On the dark ground, a long chain of torches formed a winding serpent on the rugged mountain path.
He gazed absently at the spectacle made by humans below and muttered: "I can only win, and I must keep winning, again and again..."
