Chapter 405: 406. Hidden Danger.
The divine magic granted by Melitele exceeded everyone's expectations.
After Tissaia's Firestorm disappeared, the incoming undead creatures, nearly without resistance, were forcefully pushed back.
Under the flashing golden blades, the undead creatures were no stronger than a piece of paper.
Their skin, muscles, and even bones seemed to melt like snowflakes falling to the ground, sliced apart, severed, and shattered by burning swords and knives with sizzling sounds.
The moment the human forces clashed with the monsters, dozens of ghouls were instantly decapitated.
It was so easy that even the frontline soldiers were momentarily stunned, surprised to see the familiar but strange weapons in their hands.
Among them, the Monster Hunter soldiers were the most shocked.
They had actually killed ghouls in the past and knew just how troublesome these creatures were.
Their skin was tougher than leather tanned by humans, their strength was comparable to elite knights, and their speed even surpassed the hunting dogs carefully raised by nobles…
In the past, every time they encountered such monsters, the Monster Hunter soldiers had almost no chance of survival. One slip could result in death.
This had only improved after Allen's undead creatures' oil became widespread a month ago. But now, after Ianna's divine magic was released, killing a ghoul was as easy as killing a chicken.
The enchanted swords blessed by the divine magic could sever the bones of the monsters, and the previously lethal claw strikes and bites left no scratch on the armor.
Strength had increased, speed had increased, and even the soldiers holding tower shields to protect the sorceresses could now crush a few unlucky ghouls with their shields.
"Melitele above!"
Sara cleaved a ghoul in half with one sword, wiped the monster's blood off his face, and looked around at his comrades, all filled with high spirits.
For the first time, he felt a bit of guilt over his earlier thoughts.
What more could they ask for when Allen had already prayed for such divine magic for them?
Perhaps he was just worried that Lord Mason might make things difficult for him in terms of military honors, and that's why he didn't join the fight.
Of course, this thought only flashed through his mind.
Whether or not it was true, it didn't matter now. Sara just wanted to kill all these vile god's minions who dared to plot against Ellander, destroy the monster nests, and then drive that damned dark god out of this world.
"Kill!"
Sara shouted again, leading the Monster Hunter soldiers with his sword toward the next ghoul coming from the front. But Allen, riding on the griffin, wasn't as optimistic as Sara.
"The divine magic's light is fading…"
He furrowed his brow slightly.
Although the rate of decline was subtle, the Hunter's sharp senses could detect it clearly.
This was expected, but Allen roughly estimated that with the current rate of decline, perhaps only a few monster nests could be destroyed before the divine magic's effect completely faded.
"It really is fading too quickly," Vesemir said, "The plan was disrupted by the undead creatures, and it still has an impact."
"Originally, at that place…"
He pointed to the battlefield outside, about two or three kilometers away.
That was an unnamed valley entrance. Though not wide, it could still accommodate ten people walking side by side. The deeper into the valley, the wider it became.
This morning, Arthur had taken them along the high ridges on both sides of the valley to observe the enemy's movements.
The first two monster nests were deep within the valley, far from the entrance.
"The human coalition will set up a formation at the narrow pass at the valley entrance and send out agile soldiers to lure some ghouls, allowing the army to adapt to their attack patterns before gradually advancing."
"The divine magic should have been used when the first wave of monsters came, after the monster nests were detected. But now…"
Vesemir shook his head. "Ianna had no choice."
"Being ambushed on this narrow mountain path, which only allows two or three people to walk side by side, is very disadvantageous for the human coalition. If they suffered heavy casualties from the start, it would be very easy for the hastily assembled and inexperienced morale to collapse."
"At that point, even releasing the divine magic would be unlikely to reverse the situation."
Allen nodded.
That was true. The entire human coalition had rich experience dealing with monsters and wasn't easily intimidated. The Monster Hunter soldiers were at the front, fully armored knights were following closely, but further back were conscripted farmers with longspears, many of whom didn't even have leather armor.
Better-equipped noble private troops were at the back, supervising the battle.
Fortunately, the dark god didn't suddenly launch an attack, but instead seemed to focus on intimidation.
Otherwise, if there had been a major disturbance, the Monster Hunter soldiers and the knights wouldn't have been much of a problem, but the conscripted farmers would have been in grave danger.
Now, although the divine magic was fading quickly, it had also stirred the soldiers' fighting spirit, making them realize that the previously terrifying ghouls were not so formidable after all.
With the fear of the unknown dispelled, once the divine magic fully disappeared, the army would still have its combat power.
"No wonder Ianna lacked confidence before she received the divine magic." Vesemir glanced at Allen and thought to himself, "Even with such powerful divine magic, so many unexpected things still happen."
"If things had gone according to the original plan, perhaps the soldiers' faith in Melitele and their love for Ellander would have been tested here."
"The intensity is still not enough…" Allen turned his gaze toward the north side of the valley.
Through the vision granted by his cat-eye potion, he could see the undead creatures moving there, but they didn't seem to be gathering toward the battlefield.
"Hmm." Vesemir narrowed his eyes and nodded. "Let's wait a little longer. There's no rush. At least for now, the human side is in a strong position."
Indeed, the human side was in a strong position.
Led by Sara, the Monster Hunter soldiers were like the sharpest arrows, piercing directly into the heart of the undead creatures.
Wherever they went, blood and flesh flew.
The sorceresses, having discovered that their spells were less effective than ordinary swords, began focusing on the rotters hidden among the ghouls.
These creatures were deadly to ordinary humans—one careless move, and the explosion combined with the splattered corrosive liquid could kill large numbers.
But once targeted by superhumans with fire-based long-range spells, they became natural allies of humanity.
"Boom, boom~"
With loud explosions, ghouls blasted off cliffs by the rotters outnumbered those killed by the Monster Hunter soldiers, and the sorceresses only needed the simplest fire-starting spell.
This spell, even the most talentless sorceresses could learn, was no harder than the light spell and was usually used to replace firestones for ignition. However, just like the encounter with Allen and Vesemir during the day.
The alghouls, as the brains of the undead creatures, quickly adjusted their strategy, ordering the rotters to retreat.
Countless mutilated ghoul bodies piled up on the mountain path, even affecting the progress of the troops. Sara had to arrange some people to clear the bodies so they wouldn't obstruct the march.
But even so, under the divine magic's blessing, the coalition continued to advance rapidly. In fact, thanks to the sorceresses leveling the terrain, the soldiers' speed was even faster than before the monsters attacked.
In no time, they arrived at the battlefield they had planned—the entrance to the nameless valley.
It was here, due to the more spacious terrain, that the tide of monsters suddenly surged. But once again, the humans formed a layered formation, making the slaughter even more efficient.
The knights, clad in golden armor, rotated with the Monster Hunter soldiers who had been fighting continuously.
The shield-bearers worked together, holding the front.
"Hey~ hm~ hey~ hm~"
They lifted the tower shields, resting them against their right shoulders, and advanced a step before driving them into the ground. After a two-second pause, they lifted the shields again, bracing them, and moved forward.
"Boom! Boom! Boom!"
Each of the ghouls crashed heavily against the tower shields.
Yet, not only did the divine blessing fail to knock the shield-bearers over or send them flying, but even the skin of the ghouls that touched the glowing shield was scorched, producing loud screams.
The royal knights took advantage of the gaps between the two shields to swing their swords, occasionally coordinating with the monster hunters to push forward, charging for a round.
The speed of their advance did not slow due to the change in terrain. Instead, thanks to the stable rhythm, the killing of the ghouls became more efficient and rapid.
Until...
"Rumble~ Rumble~ Rumble~"
The rubble on the ground began to tremble.
Several female sorceresses pointed their hands, and the glowing orbs floating in the air immediately flew toward the source of the sound.
A few gigantic, blood-red figures, like small mountains, pressed down, leaving deep craters on the ground.
The scurvers had arrived!
Their fierce forms, mixed with the intense pressure of the magical aura, looked like mountains descending from afar.
In the middle of the formation, the newly recruited soldiers, who had just gained courage after seeing piles of monster corpses and were ordered to rotate to the front lines, immediately started to tremble in fear.
"Don't panic! Keep attacking! The ladies will handle them!" Arthur immediately shouted to reassure them.
Before his words had even finished...
Tissaia began chanting a mysterious incantation.
Before the scurvers could even get close, violet lightning bolts pierced the air, descending from the sky.
"Ah—"
Under the shrill screams, the scurvers' outer shells were immediately charred, and then suddenly expanded.
"Tower shield bearers! Hold your shields!" Sara, who had been at the front line, looked pale, his voice distorted.
"No need." Tissaia's calm voice rang out in everyone's ears.
Then, a violent magical storm roared, kicking up sand and stones.
The expanding scurvers were blown away, directly crashing into another scurver charging from afar.
"Boom~"
"Boom~"
The explosion from the expanded scurver also triggered the detonation of another scurver.
The intense explosions shook the ground, causing the cliffs on both sides of the valley to collapse.
Rubble fell, and many stones directly struck the advancing troops, but the sorceresses, who had prepared for this, used various air-elemental spells to blow them away.
The remaining scurvers were easily killed by Tissaia using the same method.
"Continue the pursuit, don't stop!" Tissaia's voice sounded again.
After a brief pause, the entire army resumed the battle cry, quickly occupying the gaps left by the exploded scurvers.
"The pace has slowed."
Tissaia withdrew her gaze from the front line and looked toward the elderly Ianna, who was also riding a peculiar mount.
"You sorceresses sure have a lot of good things."
Ianna answered with an off-topic remark as she stroked her peculiar mount.
Although the creature wasn't fast, it was much more stable in this mountainous terrain than humans, and it was quite comfortable to ride.
"This is the latest research from the Aretuza Academy. If you want one, you can purchase it from the Aretuza Group's civilian cooperation organization," Tissaia said.
"I can't afford that." Ianna waved her hand. "Nor could I use it."
"If we succeed in driving the dark god away, I'll gift you one," Tissaia said with a helpless shake of her head.
"Make it two," Ianna bargained.
"Only if we succeed in driving it away," Tissaia emphasized.
She turned her head to look at the blood-soaked battlefield. The brightness of the "Holy Sword," "Holy Shield," and "Holy Armor" had clearly dimmed by more than one degree compared to the beginning.
"But can we really drive it away?" Tissaia's voice echoed in Ianna's mind. "At this rate, forget driving the dark god away, we might not even see the summoning ritual you mentioned."
"Who knows?" Ianna responded. "Perhaps the goddess Melitele will send another flash of lightning or dispatch angels from the heavens."
"You're getting old. Can you take this more seriously?" Tissaia sighed. "Ianna, I took care of you for a long time back in Aretuza when you were a child."
Ianna nodded. "That was certainly an unforgettable experience."
"I still remember the look of that dead toad and the leech the size of an arm."
"But..."
She looked up at the sky. "I'm already taking it seriously. When I do my best to the utmost, naturally, someone will fill in the parts I couldn't manage."
"Is this a divine prophecy?" Tissaia raised an eyebrow.
Ianna withdrew her gaze and smiled. "You could say so."
"'You could say so'?" Tissaia frowned slightly in dissatisfaction, about to press further.
At that moment, Arthur suddenly ran over from the front:
"Archpriestess, up ahead is the first monster nest. We need to change formation."
"Relay the order." Ianna turned to Tissaia and commanded, "Have the throwers carrying the dwarf bombs and grapeshot bombs move up. Also, remind the front-line soldiers to be cautious of any upheaval from the monster nest."
Tissaia had to momentarily set aside the questions in her mind and began chanting a spell.
After all, though she had promised to follow Ianna's orders, if the situation turned dire and irreversible, their Aretuza could still leave unharmed.
The one most anxious about falling behind schedule shouldn't be her.
The monster nest resembled an intestinal tract or uterus buried underground, with only a ring of sinewy, hideous blood-and-flesh protrusions visible on the surface, resembling some kind of coelenterate creature.
It looked extremely unpleasant, and from a distance, a strong stench drifted over.
As if sensing the intense danger, the monster nest began to wriggle violently.
One by one, ghouls, still wrapped in mucus, were ejected from the nest.
"Do these grapeshot bombs really work?"
The thrower, with his nose covered in cloth, carrying a heavy dwarf bomb on his back, and holding a small round clay ball in his hand, was escorted by Sara and a few strong monster hunting soldier.
Other soldiers were blocking the sides, while the sorceresses began casting spells to fend off the ghouls that were frantically attacking from the mountain path.
Flames, lightning, storms, and thunder ran rampant through the valley.
"Of course, they work," Sara replied without hesitation, lowering her body. "These were made by Sir Allen."
"I hope they work too."
The thrower sighed.
Otherwise, given the weight of the dwarf bomb, he would have to stand on the blood-and-flesh mound secreting unknown mucus to throw the bomb into the monster nest.
The odds of surviving were less than one in ten.
For Ellander, he wasn't afraid of dying, but of course, it would be better to survive.
"Then aim carefully. Is the distance enough?" Sara cleaved a ghoul that had struggled to its feet with her sword and turned back to shout.
"Enough."
The thrower took a deep breath.
He glanced at the wriggling blood-and-flesh mass about ten meters away, then, following the monster hunters' training, carefully made a small incision on the clay ball.
Once smoke began to rise from the crack, he squinted at his target before swinging his arm to throw it.
The clay ball arced smoothly through the air and accurately landed in the monster nest.
In an instant...
The entire battlefield seemed to fall silent.
