Chapter 419: 420. Bringing Vera Along.
Mind reading?
Tissaia de Vries' pupils glowed faintly, and Allen's expression stiffened. However, his Witcher school medallion showed no signs of change.
No!
Allen immediately heightened his vigilance.
Tissaia de Vries herself had mentioned that there were many ways to deceive a Witcher's school medallion.
And he didn't believe he was mistaken.
In Tissaia de Vries' brown, cat-eye-like pupils, there was a faint shimmer of magical glow—she had definitely cast a spell.
"But it might not be mind reading," Allen thought. "The divine wall of the Heliotrop Sign is still in my mind, and my thoughts are contained within that wall."
Tissaia de Vries couldn't have read his thoughts without triggering the divine wall, so...
Lie detection?
After a brief moment of contemplation, Allen's mind shifted, and he regretfully shook his head.
"Sorry, Lady Tissaia," he said.
"The way I expelled the dark god is a private matter. As for whether the complete absence of traces is because of the dark god or because of me, to be honest, I don't know."
Tissaia de Vries' expression remained unchanged.
However, the other sorceresses around her furrowed their brows, seemingly convinced that, since their dean had asked, the current issue was certainly related to Allen.
But after receiving Aretuza's favors, Allen seemed to be brushing them off.
So...
Allen paused for a moment and added, "After all, I'm just a Witcher."
Tissaia de Vries' expression remained the same.
The other sorceresses relaxed their brows, fully understanding.
Indeed, a man born to wield a sword and perform some rudimentary magical tricks couldn't possibly have the ability to completely erase traces in a magical sense—a feat even they found difficult to imagine.
"Dean, it should be the dark god's fault," one of the sorceresses whispered to Tissaia de Vries. "Different dark gods hold different powers. Perhaps the one in question controls powers of concealment."
Tissaia de Vries gave Allen a deep look but did not press further, seemingly convinced by his words.
"Summoning rituals always require a ritual caster," she turned to Ianna. "Whether the caster is human or not, there will always be such a 'ritual caster'. The fact that the monster nests appeared so densely is also highly suspicious."
"What do you mean?" Ianna frowned.
Tissaia de Vries sighed, looking at the ruins in the deep pit.
"Ianna, I'm almost certain that, besides the summoning ritual, the monster nests are also the work of one or more ritual casters."
"But there are no traces left, so I don't know whether these ritual casters sacrificed themselves or have already left."
"This is dangerous, Ianna, this is very dangerous."
Her expression became serious. "If they are still alive, even if this dark god's arrival is resolved, there will be a second time, a third time..."
"We won't always be this lucky."
Ianna fell silent.
The ability to perform summoning rituals and cultivate monster nests meant the caster was very cunning and skilled in hiding.
If Allen hadn't tracked down the summoning ritual in this valley, they might have been kept in the dark about the dark god's arrival.
Just thinking about this possibility made not only Ianna and Arthur look grim, but also the sorceresses of Aretuza.
They, like the Ban Ard Academy, were in the city, and if a similar situation arose, they wouldn't escape either.
"There should still be a magical source here..." Allen suddenly spoke. "Would the magical source help in finding... uh... the ritual casters?"
"Buzz~"
The Wolf Medallion buzzed.
Tissaia de Vries' eyes glowed with purple magical light as she looked at a specific spot above the pit.
Allen's mind shifted, linking with the Wolf Medallion, and he followed her gaze.
Red, brown, blue, and green magical light points circled around an invisible center in mid-air.
It was as though there was an invisible hole there, leaking magical energy.
This was a magical source, and it was similar to the normal magical sources near Kaer Morhen's Elemental Ring.
If the conjunction of the sphere progress bar hadn't been filled, it would be rapidly absorbing surrounding elements right now.
"Luckily," Allen thought, "the conjunction of the sphere progress has long been filled, but it's been delayed by Vilgefortz's pursuit, the Wild Hunt's destruction of Ban Ard, and the need to heal."
"Otherwise, Tissaia would have definitely noticed my anomaly by now."
"No," Tissaia de Vries shook her head, retracting her gaze. "There is indeed a magical source here, but it's just a magical source."
At this point, Allen couldn't come up with any other ideas.
Tracking was a Witcher's specialty, and the Wolf School was especially good at it. Allen even had two tracking skills.
But even with his special "tracking" skill, he couldn't find any traces of the "ritual casters" amid the vast number of footprints left by the ghoul-like creatures in the valley.
"Don't worry," Ianna suddenly smiled and spoke as the group became despondent. "Actually, there's no need to worry so much."
All eyes turned to Ianna.
"You have a good plan?" Tissaia asked curiously.
"I don't," Ianna shook her head. "But the demand for summoning rituals isn't so easy to fulfill. Every time an dark god arrives, there's either war or monsters directly slaughtering cities with great force."
"The reason this time managed to escape everyone's attention is that there's a large batch of bodies from the Black Plague era and even the Falka's Rebellion that weren't properly dealt with in the Mahakan Mountains."
"If there are any so-called 'ritual casters,' the most dangerous time for humans is when they remain unknown."
"Notify the kings of the northern continent to be on high alert and identify these potentially problematic locations. Quickly dispose of the bodies."
"Next time the dark god arrives, it won't be so easy."
"Of course..."
Ianna's tone shifted as she looked at Vesemir and Allen. "The search for these 'ritual casters' must continue."
Vesemir thought for a moment, then exchanged a glance with Allen before giving a slight nod.
"When we hunt down the remaining ghouls in the coming days, we'll keep an eye out for any other abnormalities, but we won't actively seek them out."
"After all, whether the 'ritual caster' exists is still unknown. Eliminating the ghouls that have been causing trouble in Ellander is the top priority."
"That's enough." Ianna smiled gently. "I'll have the priests notify the faithful to be vigilant. Arthur, once you return, inform Mason so he can quickly alert the kings and nobles of the various countries."
"Yes." Arthur nodded solemnly.
"Alright." Ianna looked up at the sky.
The mist rising from the mountains veiled the bright sky with a thin veil, and the fiery red sun intermittently peeked through the veil.
A cool mountain breeze blew in at this moment, dispersing the intense stench from the valley.
"Let's pack up. It's time to head back." Ianna took a deep breath.
-----------------------------
Packing up had nothing to do with the Witchers, but it concerned both Tissaia de Vries and Ianna.
However, neither woman left the ruins. Instead, after ordering Arthur and several sorceresses who had just completed the "Herbert Stammelford's Restoration Magic" to arrange the retreat of the troops and wounded, they stood beside the pit.
"Clang~ Clang~ Clang~"
Portals roared open with howling winds, unfurling in the valley.
However, these portals couldn't transport all the soldiers back at once. They could only transport a few severely wounded individuals and some of the fallen warriors' bodies in batches.
Yes, bodies.
That's the way war is. No matter how thorough the preparations are, even with the divine arts of Melitele, people still die.
Experienced warriors know how to make the best use of divine power, while those farmers with pitchforks, who were drafted into service, don't. They were quickly broken under the tidal wave of ghoul attacks, their divine protection shattered.
"Thirty-four people." Tissaia de Vries suddenly spoke.
Allen, lost in thought as he looked at the motionless bodies on the temporary stretchers, turned his head toward her.
"Only thirty-four people died in a war to expel an dark god," Tissaia de Vries said, her warm brown eyes fixed on Allen. "All the humans still alive in this valley owe you a life."
"Without divine power, except for the sorceresses of Aretuza, perhaps only two or even one human would have survived."
Allen furrowed his brow slightly. He wasn't sure what the sorceress was trying to express.
Was she trying to comfort him?
But soon, Tissaia de Vries' gaze shifted away.
"Ianna, aren't you going to help? Shouldn't you be assisting those injured?" she asked, looking at Ianna.
"The war is over. What they need are herbs, bandages, meat, and a comfortable bed, not divine power." Ianna shook her head, glancing at Tissaia de Vries. "On the contrary, you, the sorceresses from Aretuza, don't have many who can use portals. Why aren't you helping?"
"Why are you so wary of me? At least I brought people to assist Ellander." Tissaia de Vries smiled helplessly.
"One thing at a time." Ianna snorted.
"Alright," Tissaia de Vries sighed again in resignation. "There's something I wanted to discuss privately with Allen..."
"Then go ahead!" Ianna seemed to have no idea what "privately" meant and instead moved closer toward Allen's direction.
"Never mind," Tissaia de Vries saw Allen also looking at her with vigilance, waved her hand, and directly said, "Actually, what I wanted to say has already been discussed with Vesemir..."
"I'd like to invite you to Aretuza to give a lecture on monsterology for the girls."
A fourteen-year-old Witcher, giving a lecture on monsterology to the sorceresses of Aretuza?
Allen froze for a moment and looked at Vesemir.
Vesemir nodded, signaling that this was indeed the case. Of course, he didn't mention that Tissaia de Vries had originally invited both him and Allen.
Allen was silent for a moment.
He knew that he wasn't particularly skilled in monsterology, so Tissaia de Vries' intentions were quite obvious.
What Tissaia de Vries wanted was Allen himself.
Allen thought for a moment, then was about to decline.
"I know what you're worried about," Tissaia de Vries interrupted him and spoke bluntly. "To be honest, I'm very interested in your little secret and your unique body."
"But you're Vera's apprentice, and you're connected to..."
She noticed the unfriendly gaze from the side, paused, and exchanged a look with Ianna, who was glaring at her with furrowed brows:"...and you have close ties with many 'important people.'"
"If you're willing to tell me, or if you'd like me to research you, I'll make sure to offer you a satisfactory reward."
"Money, magical items, weapons, armor, precious magical materials... Aretuza will open the entire northern continent's finest treasure chambers to you. I'll make sure you're satisfied."
Seeing that Allen didn't seem very interested, Tissaia de Vries sighed, reflecting on how rare it was to encounter such a young, wealthy Witcher, and then got back to the point: "If you don't want to, I won't force you. Ianna knows my personality."
Allen looked at Ianna.
Though Ianna didn't look very happy, she didn't reject it.
"I'm sincerely inviting you, Allen," Tissaia de Vries continued. "The high-and-mighty girls at Aretuza need a wake-up call to see how dangerous the world is becoming."
"And at your age, you're just the right person."
"My age is just right?"
How is it right?
Allen wanted to ask.
"Let's put it this way," Tissaia de Vries' gaze wandered over Allen's body. "Your Wolf School Witcher armor is still in its original form, not enchanted, right?"
Allen nodded.
"I imagine you plan to have Vera enchant it."
Allen nodded again.
"Although Vera is well-known for her alchemy, her strength lies in potions," Tissaia de Vries said with a confident smile. "Of course, Vera can enchant it, but I think you have a better option..."
"What do you mean?"
"From Hen Gedymdeith to the rest of the northern continent, you won't find a better enchanter than me..."
Tissaia de Vries' tone was calm, but her air of superiority could be felt in every word.
Allen, slightly tempted, glanced at Ianna and Vesemir.
Neither Ianna nor Vesemir denied it.
"As long as you're willing to come to Aretuza, I'll personally enchant it for you. Of course, you'll have to pay for the materials..." She paused, then added, "But if you're willing..."
"He doesn't want to be studied like a toad, owl, or rat!" Ianna interrupted angrily.
"But he's willing to go to Aretuza..." Allen's words followed.
"Allen!" Ianna exclaimed.
"Good, you won't regret it." Tissaia de Vries looked particularly pleased.
She paid no attention to Ianna's hostile glare and immediately left to open a portal for the wounded.
"Allen..." After Tissaia de Vries left, Ianna and Vesemir immediately approached him.
"Don't worry," Allen winked at the two of them, "I'll bring Vera along too."
