Chapter 6 - Why Are You There?
Chapter 6: Why Are You There?
Why are happy moments so short?
Why does this ruthless and cruel reality take away precious things so casually?
‘Sob.’
I buried myself in the worn-out sofa, nearly devoid of cushioning, and hit it weakly with my soft limbs.
Sad.
Miserable.
Why is this happening to me?!
I stopped hitting the sofa and turned my head to the side.
On the floor was a beautiful yet crumpled box.
Inside that box was the source of my happiness.
‘Heuheuheu.’
Tears streamed down my face as I silently wept.
I couldn’t take my eyes off the box.
The source of happiness inside the box was in a total mess.
Various desserts were mixed up, their shapes ruined.
As the saying goes, appearance matters just as much as taste.
‘Ahuuuahuu.’
It was all because of them.
On the way back, I bumped into someone.
The box in my hand fell and rolled across the ground in a spectacular fashion.
Naturally, a dance party erupted among the desserts inside the box.
By the time I went to rescue them, it was already a disaster beyond repair.
I had no choice but to despair.
I tried to avoid them.
I definitely dodged at the last moment, but they were the ones who collided with me.
Yes, everyone makes mistakes.
If they had just apologized, bought new desserts as compensation, and we’d parted ways with a smile, this story could have had a happy ending.
But fairy tale endings are just fiction.
Because they are fictional, reality is cruel.
— “Hey, are your eyes just for decoration? Did you sell them off? That’s it. I’m catching this punk…”
— “Hey, stop it. We’ve got work to do. We don’t have time to waste here.”
— “Fine. Tsk. Consider yourself lucky. Tch!”
And just like that, the group leisurely disappeared.
How dare they ruin my desserts and act so rudely?!
I got up from the sofa, approached the box, hugged it tightly, and pressed my soft cheek against it.
‘I’ll make sure to avenge you.’
I could almost hear the desserts’ voices cheering and encouraging me.
I wiped my tear-streaked face with my arm and, with determination, stood up.
A fiery resolve burned within my eyes.
Though I wanted to storm out immediately, there was something I had to do first.
‘No matter how ruined their shapes are, the taste should still be the same. Let’s eat one before starting.’
I picked up the box and walked toward the refrigerator.
Carefully selecting one dessert, I put the rest neatly into the fridge.
The dessert I chose was a chocolate brownie.
With a serious expression, I took a small bite and chewed slowly.
But as the sweetness spread in my mouth, I couldn’t help but relax and smile.
No, this doesn’t mean my desire for revenge has disappeared.
‘If you think you can mess with my desserts and get away with it, you’re gravely mistaken.’
I swallowed and finished the brownie.
Today left me with a deep sense of emptiness.
As my right hand reached toward the refrigerator, my other hand frantically grabbed it.
‘You must resist.’
In my imagination, countless tiny versions of myself argued over what to do.
They tangled together, holding a trial.
At the end of the trial, a judge, who looked exactly like me, delivered the final verdict.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
And so, I made up my mind.
‘Fine! Just one more. This is all to recharge my energy for revenge.’
It wasn’t that I was breaking my own rules out of desire.
This was all for the sake of vengeance.
I grabbed one more dessert from the refrigerator, ate it, and chewed.
Haaa. Blissful.
*
It took three weeks.
Finding out what kind of organization they were and where their base was took some time.
Still, now that I found them, that’s all that matters.
‘The moon is beautiful tonight.’
I admired the full moon rising in the night sky.
It felt like the perfect night to enjoy a peaceful moment with a fizzy drink under the moonlight.
But now wasn’t the time for that.
Suppressing my regret, I tore my gaze away from the moon.
‘I wonder what they’re doing now. I hope they’re having the happiest moment of their lives. It’ll make them feel exactly how I felt.’
I was standing on a rooftop.
My eyes were fixed on a small building in the distance.
The considerable distance made it look tiny.
The lights in that building were still on.
That was the place I would attack soon.
‘This lollipop is delicious. Why did they discontinue something so good?’
The reason I wasn’t attacking yet was because of a lollipop.
Before starting, I was savoring the Rainbow Lollipop Red had given me earlier.
Every time I swirled it in my mouth, 18 different flavors spread out.
The reason for my leisurely pace was simple.
It was a small act of kindness.
Just as death row prisoners are granted a final meal, I was giving them their last moment of peace.
See? I’m such a kind person.
As I lazily licked the lollipop, it gradually dwindled to a tiny fragment.
Crunch.
Crunch.
It’s gone now.
How unfortunate.
I wish I could have another.
I licked the last remnants of sweetness off the stick.
Then I took the stick out of my mouth.
Playing with the stick for a moment, I lightly flicked it toward their base with a hint of magic.
‘It’s a bit early, but consider this my Merry Christmas gift.’
The stick flew at an incredible speed, and despite the considerable distance, it accurately broke through the building’s window and landed inside.
Moments later, I saw a crowd forming outside the building, bustling with activity.
It seemed they really appreciated my gift.
You might wonder why I would go out of my way to create such a commotion.
The reason is simple.
Just as a thief announces their intent before stealing treasure, I wanted to warn them about what was about to happen.
In other words, it was a declaration of war.
My way of kindly telling them to prepare for the incoming attack.
Since this might be their end, I thought it better for them to go out with a bang than to end things anticlimactically.
Who knows, maybe they’d flail around and miraculously survive.
Not that I’ve ever let anyone escape before.
‘Time to go.’
I clasped my hands together and stretched them upward.
I loosened my body with a few light movements.
As I gathered my magic, black mist began to swirl around me.
The mist quickly dissipated, and when I glanced at the puddle on the rooftop floor,
The reflection showed a fearsome figure clad in armor and a helmet.
I looked like a dark knight straight out of a fantasy game.
Black energy gently rippled around me, perfectly matching my ominous appearance.
Before setting off, I turned my gaze in a direction other than my destination.
‘….’
Then, without hesitation, I refocused on my target and leapt forward.
I darted across rooftops, swiftly closing the distance to my destination.
I had to finish quickly.
Before anyone else got involved and made things more troublesome.
*
Whenever I appeared as the Grim Reaper, the reaction from the organization’s members was always the same.
At first, they wouldn’t recognize who I was, but once they realized,
Panic, shock, fear—
Their faces would show every emotion imaginable as they pulled out their weapons to attack me.
Their efforts weren’t to kill me but to survive.
“What the hell?! Is it real?! Is it really the Grim Reaper?!”
“Why on earth is it here?!”
“Don’t stop attacking! Use anything and everything—just keep firing!”
A torrent of magical and technological flames rained down on me.
Powerful and merciless enough to obliterate any ordinary person on impact.
Unfortunately for them, none of it worked on me.
The armor I wore was sturdy enough that not even a scratch appeared.
When I emerged unscathed from the blazing inferno,
They all froze in terror as if they’d seen a ghost.
“Dieeee!!”
“Damn it! Damn it! Damn it!”
Sensing movement to my left, I reached out my hand.
The group of members in my left field of vision suddenly froze, their attacks halting mid-air.
As I slightly raised my arm, over a hundred people floated into the air.
When I clenched my fist, blue flames erupted from their chests, engulfing their entire bodies in an instant.
Without even a chance to scream, they vanished without a trace.
“You monster!”
“Just die already!”
When I casually swung the sword in my right hand toward another presence,
A blue blade aura swept over the members.
The ground split open, and the wall behind them bore a massive scar.
Though I swung it lightly, as if swatting away flies,
The building shook violently, and the members were sent flying.
Those who survived completely lost their will to fight and fled in desperation.
But I didn’t let them escape.
Even if they begged for mercy, I showed no leniency.
They were criminals.
I wasn’t naïve enough to show kindness to criminals.
Would they have spared those who begged for their lives?
After dealing with the small fry, I reached the deeper part of the building.
There, I found three figures radiating an entirely different aura.
I guessed they were the leaders of the organization.
“Kuhahaha! You’ve certainly caused quite the racket. Are you the infamous Grim Reaper? You certainly look the part.”
A tail protruding from their backside, a forked snake-like tongue,
Vertical pupils,
And red scales covering their entire body, resembling that of a reptile.
They were Lizardmen.
There were also one yellow and one blue.
“We are the Three-Headed Dragons, descendants of the Dragon. I am the eldest, Igni. The one over there is the second, Varuna, and the one beyond is the youngest, Indraji.”
When these lizards dared to call themselves dragons, I couldn’t help but laugh inwardly.
They didn’t seem afraid of me.
In fact, I could sense their fighting spirit.
“We’ve always wondered—could we, the descendants of dragons, tear apart the Grim Reaper?”
The red one opened its mouth wide in a grin.
“This will be a glorious battle. Now, take this, the power of a dragon!”
The red one began to draw in the ambient magic from the air.
The massive energy compressed and turned red.
Then, the red one opened its mouth wide and aimed at me.
A beam of fire shot straight toward me.
It wasn’t Dragon Breath, of course.
A mere lizard couldn’t mimic such a technique.
I extended my left hand forward.
Standing firm in place, without taking a single step back.
I effortlessly blocked the lukewarm beam and compressed its energy into a single point with my own magic.
Soon, a mass of blue flames formed on my left palm.
‘Here, take it back.’
I directed the flame toward the red one and released its energy.
The beam, ten times larger than what the red one had fired, shot straight at it.
Everything in its path evaporated without a trace.
The red one included.
“Brother!”
The yellow one charged at me at lightning speed.
In an instant, it closed the distance and attempted to stab me with claws covered in lightning.
But I calmly caught its wrist.
Then, I repeatedly slammed it into the ground, over and over.
“Let go of my brother!”
The blue one moved.
Being the kind soul I am, I followed its request and hurled the yellow one toward it.
The yellow one’s face showed panic, as if it hadn’t expected my actions.
And perhaps because of the speed at which I threw it,
The blue one couldn’t catch the yellow one properly.
They both flew into the wall together.
As they collided, I swung my arm at the spot where they overlapped,
And a sharp blade pierced through both of them.
Silence fell over the area where everything had come to an end.
With this, the desserts had been avenged.
I summoned my sword back to me.
‘It ended far more easily than I expected. Good, time to leave befo—oh, it’s already too late.’
An intense and ferocious killing intent pierced through my entire body, momentarily causing me to stagger.
But I didn’t lose focus and swung my sword toward the oncoming danger.
What collided with my attack came at incredible speed, splitting the ground apart and sending debris flying in every direction.
‘Huh? That figure…?’
When I saw the face of the one who had attacked me,
I froze in shock.
It was Red, whom I had met a few weeks ago.
