Chapter 199: Speaking volumes.
Tension was what Alix felt when she walked into the room. Thick, chunky, beefy tension that could be cut through with a knife. Everyone was there, but no one was talking. There was nothing harmonious about the graveyard silence in the room.
If she didn't know better, Alix would assume that the old madam was on her deathbed and these were relatives that had come to wish her farewell.
She stood awkwardly in the entrance to the room, wondering whether she should approach her husband first, or his mother. Or perhaps the elders, since she had come to visit the sick patient.
And then there were the strangers in the room. Well___, not strangers anymore since one was a son and another a grandson of the family. Wang Yue, Wang Yong and Na Na. Wang Yong was sticking to grandpa Zhang's side like sticky rice. Na Na, his mother was the same, only she was sticking to her husband.
Yura was staring at Na Na's hands viciously as if they were holding something they should not be holding. It was understandable of course, given the fact that Zhang Xian, was her husband.
"Oh, Xi Xi, you are here." Caishen said, perplexed for he had no idea that she was coming.
Alix walked inside the room, and put down all she had brought on the table. Bi Cang did the same and excused himself immediately.
She approached Yura first, rather than her husband. "Hello, mother."
"En, Xi Xi." absentminded, she replied.
She touched Zhang An's arm and rubbed it lightly. While she had no polite words for her sister-in-law, the woman's red swollen eyes did make her pitiful.
From there, she walked over to grandpa Zhang and put on a tense smile. "Grandfather, I came as quickly as I could when I heard about grandmother. How is she?"
Grandpa Zhang looked at his wife that was still under heavy sedation and he said, "She will be fine, she is just sleeping."
He looked at Alix and added, "You are busy with the new school and filming, you didn't need to rush away from your work."
"No, grandfather, how can I work comfortably when grandmother has been hospitalized? I have to be here because I am family."
Grandpa Zhang smiled weakly. He nodded and gave her an appreciative glance before looking at his wife. Then, he sighed.
"Hello, sister-in-law." Standing behind grandpa Zhang, Wang Yong greeted Alix.
He was smiling warmly, as if he had seen a friend or an ally. "I am Wang Yong."
Alix smiled back, a fake smile because she was thinking of all the ways in which she would eviscerate him if he ever attempted to harm her or Caishen or Xiaobo. Basically, if his greed caused anymore harm to those she had come t love, she would not go easy on him. He would need new bones to replace the old ones she crushed.
"Who are you?" she asked him.
She had to play the part of clueless woman well after all, she had never met him before. "You called me sister-in-law." she added.
Alix turned to Caishen, beseeching for an answer. She didn't just look at him but she looked at the others too. Han Yura pursed her lips and looked to the side. Zhang Yura looked towards the door while Zhang Bo and Caishen stared at each other for a few seconds.
The door was opened and Bi Cang pushed a stroller inside. Majesty was sleeping in there. Bi Cang must have brought him because it was unknown how much time Alix would be spending here.
Alix accepted the stroller and rested her hands on it. Bi Cang closed the door and then she turned her head back to Wang Yong.
"I am...." he looked around the room and lowered his head.
The way he was acting, it almost seemed as if he was ashamed or afraid. Alix couldn't tell which it was but what she could see was that he was a great actor. Having lived through Lin Billi, she could read him as if he was transparent glass.
If men could be pretend to be a white lotus, then Wang Yong was one, a male white lotus bitch.
"Uhm...he is my grandson." Grandpa Zhang bought into Wang Yong's act quite easily. He even took his hand before turning to the other two strangers in the room. "That is my son Zhang Xian, your husband's father. Xian, this is your daughter-in-law, Caishen's wife."
Alix turned her head to Caishen, Zhang Bo and then to Yura before looking at the elder.
"I heard about it from my husband, that his father is alive." she said.
She looked at the middle aged man who looked like he had lived a very rough poor life and she bowed her head politely.
"Hello, father-in-law."
She couldn't greet Na Na, as she could not refer to her as mother-in-law. Not only would it be a slap in Yura's face, it would also be an insult to Caishen because his mother was sitting right there in the room with them. So, all she did was nod.
"Greetings." Zhang Xian greeted her in a hoarse voice.
Alix smiled and acted as if she didn't see that hideous scar on his face.
"Hello." Na Na greeted her.
Again, all Alix did was nod at her and then turn away. Her feet carried her to her husband who was sitting by the window with his brother.
There was an empty chair next to him and she sat down. Immediately after sitting, she whispered to him, "Are you okay?"
He shook his head. He didn't lie about the state of his mind or emotions.
She extended her right hand and took his left one, interlocking their fingers together.
"It will be alright. I am here now." She whispered to him.
He squeezed her hand and gave her a small grateful smile to cover up his pain. Indeed, he felt better having her there. Lately, she was his support system and her presence was all he needed to calm down. Her and Baby, who had been left at home.
For the next thirty two minutes, silence returned to the room like an unwelcome guest that they simply couldn't get rid of. It made Alix so uncomfortable and out of place. The weird glances being sent around, the silent accusations in Yura's eyes, the guilt in Zhang Xian's eyes. The pain and guilt in the eyes of grandpa Zhang. Nobody was talking but a whole lot of communication was going on in the silence.
At some point, someone was going to explode and everything that was being stuffed down was going to come to the surface like a sewage from a pipe that had had burst.
Alix endured it for as long as she could, until she couldn't. "Grandfather, I brought some porridge, different types for everyone to eat in case they are hungry. You have all been here since morning, you should eat something."
She couldn't stand or sit around like the rest of them, doing nothing.
