Chapter 10: Shadows in the Distance
A Restless Night
Even after the victory, Daniel couldn't shake the uneasy feeling. The way his skin prickled when he left the pitch, the sensation of being watched—it wasn't paranoia. It was real.
Lying in bed, he replayed the match in his mind, but his thoughts kept drifting elsewhere. His past. The people who once hunted him. They were gone... weren't they?
Sleep didn't come easily that night.
The next morning, Daniel dragged himself to school. Sofia greeted him with a teasing smile. "You look terrible."
"Thanks," Daniel muttered, rubbing his eyes.
She chuckled. "Seriously, did you even sleep?"
"Not really," he admitted, adjusting his backpack.
Sofia tilted her head. "Something bothering you?"
He hesitated. He couldn't just tell her about his past, about the powers, about the people who had once tried to kill him.
So he shrugged. "Just tired from the match."
She didn't look convinced but let it go.
At lunch, Miguel, Luis, and a few other teammates were discussing the next game when Daniel noticed someone unusual in the cafeteria.
A man in a dark hoodie sat alone, barely touching his food. His posture was too stiff, his gaze flickering toward Daniel when he thought no one was looking.
Daniel clenched his fists under the table.
Was it happening again?
As Daniel walked out of the building, he spotted the man again. This time, he was standing near the school gate, pretending to look at his phone.
Daniel's heart pounded. He had spent months being hunted, always looking over his shoulder. He thought it was over.
Apparently not.
"Hey," Sofia called out, snapping him out of his thoughts. "You coming?"
Daniel forced a smile. "Yeah, let's go."
But as he walked away, he knew one thing for sure—whoever this was, they weren't just passing by. They were watching him.
