Chapter 5: Chapter 4: Marriage?
"When you stop doing things for fun you might as well be dead."

"Thanks for the food," the words were a shared, quiet murmur in the stillness of the morning. A simple Japanese breakfast, eaten in a comfortable silence, was all the ceremony the start of their day required.
As Rito finished, Mikan reached over and took his plate along with her own, effortlessly beginning to clear the table. There was an unspoken understanding, a quiet comfort that settled between them in the soft morning light.
School… Rito let out a sigh that was barely audible. The thought alone was a chore, 'I would rather want to be in a dream.' he mused, longing for the soft embrace of the bed over the day's demands. After another, slightly more resigned sigh, he finally moved to leave.
"Rito, take care." Mikan's voice, warm and bright, followed him, her hand waving a sweet goodbye as he slung his backpack over his shoulder, preparing for the day ahead.
He glanced back, a small, genuine smile, reserved just for her, gracing his lips. It was a smile that spoke of shared moments and unspoken affection, a soft warmth in the cool morning air.
"Yeah. See you, Mikan."
The door slid shut behind him, and the quiet of the morning enveloped him. His thoughts, however, were anything but quiet, drifting back to the chaos of the previous night.
_______
Yesterday night was fun. It was… something, he mused, a smile appearing on his lips. The bubbly, pink-haired girl—Lala—and her two goons had certainly shaken up his monotonous life.
I wonder what she's up to? A flicker of genuine curiosity, a rare spark in his usually placid demeanor, crossed his mind. Did she find a place to crash?
The sudden, overwhelming wave of drowsiness after the "octopus incident" had pulled him away before he could witness the aftermath. He simply hadn't had the energy to stick around.
She'd mentioned a plan.
Knowing her for all of five minutes, it's probably something ridiculous, he thought, a corner of his mouth twitching upwards. He wouldn't mind picking her brain about alien tech, the universe, all of it.
But actively getting closer to a girl who seemed to be a walking, talking trouble magnet? He wasn't that bored.
Still, it was my fault things ended so abruptly. The thought was a simple acknowledgment of fact. Maybe we'll cross paths again. Or not. He was cool either way.
Lost in his own head, he nearly missed the familiar figure waiting at the usual corner.
"Morning, Sairenji," he said, his voice smooth and even as he approached.
Sairenji Haruna, with her striking blue hair and gentle purple eyes, was a pleasant constant in his daily routine.
A small, red clip always held back a section of her hair on the left. They'd fallen into an easy rhythm of walking to school together, a comfortable silence punctuated by polite greetings.
"..."
But today, she just stared, her usual bright "Good morning, Yuuki-kun!" noticeably absent. Her gaze was distant, as if she were looking right through him.
"Something the matter?" he prompted, his tone shifting from lazy greeting to mild concern.
The sound of his voice seemed to jolt her back to reality.
"G-Good Morning, Yuuki-kun…" she stammered, a faint blush creeping up her cheeks. Her eyes widened slightly, truly taking in his appearance for the first time that morning.
"You look… different," she murmured, her gaze lingering on the subtle shift in his hair and eye color.
"Does it not suit me?" Rito asked, a hint of amusement in his voice.
"No…!" She shook her head quickly, a little flustered by the directness of the question. It was so unlike him. "You look… good," she admitted, her voice barely a whisper.
"Oh? Good to know."
"Umm… yes…" Haruna felt her heart flutter. She wanted to ask what had happened, what had changed, but his gaze held hers, and the words caught in her throat.
Yuuki-kun's eyes… They seemed deeper today, more confident. He carried himself with a new kind of charm that was both unnerving and incredibly attractive.
She found herself imagining, just for a second, what it would be like to walk beside him holding his hand… A wave of heat rushed to her face, and she quickly shook the fantasy away.
"Earth to Sairenji… Earth to Sairenji…"
She blinked, and he was suddenly right there, leaning in with a playful, almost bored smirk.
"Too close!" she squeaked, instinctively putting her hands up to push him away. But he'd already taken a step back, his hands in his pockets.
"You were a million miles away. Everything alright?" he asked, that easy smile making her blush all over again.
"N-no! I mean, yes! I'm fine!" she insisted, her voice a little too high. "We'll be late for school, let's go!" She flashed a bright, albeit flustered, smile.
He's still the same kind Yuuki-kun, she thought, a wave of relief washing over her. Just… a little more handsome. And a lot more… bold.
He gave a slight nod, seemingly satisfied with her answer, and they fell into step together. But after only a few paces, Rito came to an abrupt halt, his head tilted slightly.
"Yuuki-kun?" Haruna turned, confused by his sudden stillness.
"You should go ahead," he said, offering a disarming, fleeting smile that didn't quite reach his eyes. "I'll see you in class."
Without waiting for a reply, he turned his back on her and started walking in the opposite direction, away from the school, his hands shoved deep in his pockets.
His polite goodbye was the gentle closing of a door to a world she had, for a fleeting moment, been invited to see.
Haruna watched him go, a whirlwind of confusion and a pang of disappointment in her chest.
She blinked, her eyes in confusion. It was only for a second, but when her eyes refocused, the street in front of her was empty. Gone? He was right there. She blinked, and he was just... gone. How? It's not possible. Her heart is pounding, but not in a good way now.
It's the way he smiled before he left. A polite goodbye that felt like a locked door. He was here, but he wasn't. He was more himself than ever, and yet he felt like a complete stranger.
Who are you, Yuuki-kun? What happened to the boy I used to know, and why do I think I like this new one even more? Her head snapped back towards the school, and she walked with disappointment.
_____________
Down the block, as if he'd teleported, Rito appeared right beside the still-bouncing like Lala.
One moment he was walking away from Haruna, the next, he was there, effortlessly placing a hand on the alien girl's shoulder to stop her in her tracks.
"Hold on a second," Rito's voice caused Lala to look in his direction with surprise.
"Rito!" Lala beamed, her voice a symphony of pure, unadulterated joy. She bounced on the balls of her feet, her eyes sparkling with a mischievous glint.
"I've been looking all over for you!"
"And here I thought you had a plan." Rito simply raised an eyebrow, a hint of weariness in his gaze.
"I do! I do! This is the plan!" Lala declared, clapping her hands together with a sound like popping candy. With all the dramatic flair of a grand announcement, she pointed a finger at him, her smile wide and brilliant.
"Let's get married, Rito!"
"…"
"…"
"…"
The proposal hung in the air, as sudden and absurd as her very existence on his planet.
Rito's mind processed the input, the logic, and the sheer audacity of it all. He didn't feel surprised, or angry, or even flustered. He just felt… amused. He let out a quiet, single huff of air.
"Hah."
It wasn't a yes. It wasn't a no. It was the sound of a man acknowledging the universe had just told a particularly strange joke.
But to Lala, it was all the confirmation she needed.
"You think so too?! Oh, that's perfect! ❤️" With a squeal of pure delight, she launched herself at him, wrapping him in a hug that was surprisingly strong.
"See? I told you this was a great plan! Now I don't have to go back home, and I get to stay here with you forever! We'll have so much fun!"
Rito, still processing the sheer whiplash of the last ten seconds, found his arms awkwardly pinned before she released him just as quickly.
"So, what kind of play is this?" he asked, a hint of dry sarcasm in his tone as he looked down at her.
"What do you mean?" Lala tilted her head, her ever-present smile unwavering as she looked at him with genuine curiosity. Her hand reached up and playfully touched a strand of his hair. "It's not a play!"
"'Getting married'," Rito deadpanned, staring at her innocent expression. He briefly considered that going back to sleep would be a far more logical use of his time.
"Oh, that!" Lala put a fist into her open palm as if struck by a grand realization. "That's because we're engaged!"
Question marks practically materialized over Rito's head. He looked at this strange, effervescent girl and then at the giant hat that is Peke on her head.
"And engaged people get to live under the same roof on Earth, right? So now I get to live with you!" she declared as if she'd just solved a complex equation.
"That is how I have perceived it as well," Peke, her robot companion, added sagely.
"Well, so do I," Rito said, his tone surprisingly agreeable. "But when, exactly, did we get engaged?" As far as he could recall, his memory of the previous night was chaotic but proposal-free.
Was it when I was leaving? In my drowsiness, did I say something…? He searched his memory, but it was a haze, overshadowed by the phantom instincts of another man, Toji Fushiguro. He held her questioning gaze, waiting for the data.
"About that," Peke spoke up. "You have followed the formal proposal procedure of Planet Deviluke. You and Lala-sama are officially engaged."
"I'll never forget it," Lala sighed, a dreamy look in her eyes as if recalling a cherished, ancient memory, though it had only happened last night. "Rito touched my breasts, stared at me with such a warm gaze, and confessed his love for me."
"And Lala-sama accepted that confession," Peke elaborated smoothly. "As a result, the action you took—when you grabbed her chest yesterday at 20:47 Earth time—has been registered and approved as an official ceremony on Deviluke."
Rito stared at Lala's pure, expectant gaze. He saw the simple logic of her scheme, her bubbly optimism, and the genuine hope in her eyes. It was ridiculous. It was chaotic. And rejecting it would be the boring, logical thing to do.
The logic, while bizarre, was simple: Action A (touching) + Perceived Intent B (confession) = Result C (engagement). It seems it was a cultural rule on her planet. A fact. Panicking about it was inefficient. He looked at Lala again, at her pure, expectant gaze.
He let out a short, soft laugh. "I see. So that's how it works." He looked her directly in the eye, his own gaze clear and steady.
"Alright then. Can't be helped."
Lala's eyes widened. She expected confusion, maybe rejection, but not this calm, easy acceptance.
"I'll look forward to our relationship, Lala," he said, his tone earnest and matter-of-fact. He accepted the new reality, and the responsibilities that came with it. He gave her a small, formal bow.
"Me too, Rito!" Lala beamed, quickly mimicking his bow.
"Though," he added, straightening up and meeting her gaze directly, "since we're engaged now, I'm curious to see how this relationship will grow. We don't know anything about each other. I'd like to get to know you better." He offered her a smile—not a wide, goofy grin, but a small, bright, and genuinely curious one.
"Rito…" Lala whispered his name.
When she saw that smile, for a moment, even she was dazed. It wasn't the reaction she had schemed for. It was better. It was genuine, kind, and held a quiet strength that made her heart flutter for a reason entirely different from her plan. and it was utterly sincere.
That wasn't the smile of someone trapped, but of someone who had just been presented with a fascinating new puzzle and was ready to solve it, accepting all the pieces, no matter how strange they were.
She handed him a counterfeit coin, and with a single, earnest glance, he turned it into pure gold.
Rito honored her scheme by taking it more seriously than she did, and in doing so, gave her not the escape she wanted, but the genuine connection she didn't know she needed.
Rito was ready to take care of her, and for the first time, her little scheme to stay on Earth felt like it might just become something wonderfully real.
