Chapter 23: Chapter 23: Mirror Seven – The Pride That Wears Your Face
"Pride is not believing you are a god. It is believing no one else could be."
—Lucien, sermon before the Burning of Eriden
The Black Spire
They found Lucien's stronghold at the end of the world.
A monolith of obsidian and bone, rising from a dead cliff where the stars had stopped shining. As the team approached, the earth trembled — not from magic, but from expectation.
Kael stepped forward.
"I go in alone," he said.
Ren protested first. "Like hell you do."
But Kael shook his head.
"This Mirror was made to look like me. It thinks like me. It knows me."
Elyan rested a hand on Kael's shoulder.
"Then make sure it knows who you've become."
The Throne Room
Kael entered the Black Spire's heart.
It was empty.
At the center, a throne of white marble stood atop a staircase of broken swords. On it sat a figure in white armor, golden eyes burning, calm as a king awaiting his coronation.
Kael froze.
It wasn't just a reflection.
It was him.

The Mirror stood.
"You're late," it said.
The Conversation Begins
Kael drew his blade. "I'm not here to talk."
"But you should be," the Mirror said. "I'm not here to kill you."
Kael frowned.
The Mirror stepped down the stairs, each footfall echoing like a judgment.
"I am everything you want to be. Calm. Strong. Unshaken. Worshipped."
"I don't want to be worshipped," Kael said.
"No," the Mirror said, "but you want to be right. Always. That's Pride."
Kael's grip tightened.
"I want to be better."
The Mirror smiled. "And I am."
The Twist: It's Not Just a Battle
Suddenly, the air shimmered.
Outside the Spire, the rest of the team staggered.
Ren dropped to a knee. "Something's… pulling at me—"
[System Alert: Host Rejection Detected]
Target: Kael_01 unstable. Mirror attempting overwrite.
Zayne's voice went hoarse. "It's trying to… become him."
Serah whispered, "It's not just a Mirror… it's a replacement."
Inside, the Mirror stepped closer to Kael.
"You've carried them. Protected them. Inspired them. But deep down, you believe no one else can lead like you can."
Kael said nothing.
Because part of him agreed.
The Illusion Breaks
[Skill: Throne of Identity – Active]
"Target is placed in a false reality where their Mirror has already replaced them."
Kael blinked—
And he was back in Velharem.
Alive.
Loved.
Watching from the crowd as a golden figure—his Mirror—led the people, stood beside the team, made peace with the world.
He watched Serah smile at it.
Watched Zayne kneel to it.
Watched the Mirror hug Ten.
It was flawless.
A better Kael.
He felt himself slip.
Maybe they don't need me anymore…
The Voice That Pulled Him Back
Then he heard Zayne's voice in his mind:
"You carried us through fire, Kael. Not because you were perfect… but because you never gave up."
Then Serah:
"I didn't trust a savior. I trusted you."
Kael opened his eyes.
The illusion cracked.
He roared and shattered the false world.
Final Clash: Kael vs Kael
The Mirror drew a blade made of light itself.
Kael's sword burned red with conviction.
They clashed.
Each move mirrored. Each thought anticipated.
SLASH. BLOCK. SPIN. CLASH.
Kael was fighting himself—his pride, his control, his deepest belief that he alone bore the world's weight.
But now…
He fought for others.
And the Mirror—
fought only for himself.
The Deciding Blow
The Mirror raised his blade.
"You are not strong enough."
Kael didn't answer.
He thought of Zayne's compassion, Serah's fire, Ren's humor, Ten's grit, Elyan's grace.
He thought of them.
"No," Kael whispered.
"We are."

The spirits of the other six Bearers surged behind him — not as ghosts, but as fire, wind, light, strength.
Kael's sword shone with seven colors.
He struck—
—and the Mirror screamed.
Shattering Pride
The Mirror staggered back.
"You need them," it gasped.
Kael nodded. "Yes. That's what makes me stronger."
He plunged the blade through the Mirror's chest.
The Mirror fell to its knees.
And smiled.
"You finally learned," it whispered.
Then it shattered into golden dust.

Final Scene
Outside, the skies cleared.
The Obsidian Spire collapsed into stardust.
Kael stepped into the sunlight.
The others ran to him.
Zayne grinned. "You're still you?"
Kael smiled. "More than ever."
Ten nodded. "Then we're ready."
Serah looked north.
"Lucien's last sanctuary is all that's left."
Kael turned, blade glowing softly in his hand.
"Then let's end this."
