Tokyo Ghoul: Starting with Mangekyo Sharingan

Chapter 16: The Battle Begins

The speed of the One-Eyed Owl was so fast that the human eye could barely keep up.

But for Byakuya, with his Mangekyo Sharingan, there was no pressure.

Kasuka was also no ordinary person, though she struggled, she could barely keep up with the ferocious attacks of the One-Eyed Owl.

The most terrifying part, though, was that the Owl had yet to enter her full kagune form...

At this point, Kasuka couldn't afford to spare her attention to speak to Byakuya. All she could do was protect him as best she could while fending off the One-Eyed Owl.

She held her S rated quinque, crafted in the form of a long spear, in front of Byakuya.

Clang!

The One-Eyed Owl's attack did not harm Kasuka directly, but cracks began to appear in her quinque. It wouldn't last much longer under these relentless assaults.

The impact forced her back a step, and she barely managed to stabilize herself.

But in the next moment, the One-Eyed Owl fully unleashed her kagune form!

A torrent of kagune released from the One-Eyed Owl forming a massive body clad in a black cloak, towering at least three or four meters tall.

Even her mask was made from kagune, with only a single, ominous right eye glowing crimson—the origin of her moniker as the One-Eyed Owl.

Upon seeing the kagune form of Eto, Byakuya realized she looked exactly as he remembered.

In this timeline, her kagune form was vastly different from her grotesque appearance in the original timeline, when years of "cannibalization" had further mutated her kakuja form.

At this moment, Kasuka's brows furrowed tightly. This was her first time facing the fully transformed One-Eyed Owl and the sheer sense of pressure was unlike anything she'd experienced from any other ghoul.

Suddenly, the giant kagune arm of the One-Eyed Owl swept toward Kasuka!

In her fully transformed state, the One-Eyed Owl's combat ability was drastically amplified, and Kasuka couldn't react in time.

Byakuya quickly attempted to block the attack on Kasuka using his own quinque. However, his B rated quinque was too fragile and was easily shattered by the kagune arm.

He quickly pulled back to avoid getting himself killed in the process.

Despite the setback, he successfully absorbed most of the force, allowing Kasuka to block what was left with her own quinque, though it sent her staggering backward.

Her auinque slipped from her hand, falling to the ground between her and the Owl.

Kasuka's face went pale with shock.

This was extremely dangerous!

A CCG Investigator without a quinque had almost no chance of resisting against a powerful ghoul, let alone an SSS rated.

But in that moment, the Owl paused, glancing at Byakuya.

Eto had originally intended to kill Kasuka and leave, sparing Byakuya's life.

Despite her intense hatred for CCG investigators and tendency to kill them on sight, this particular one had previously helped her.

Still, she hadn't expected him to have the nerve to challenge her. Was he not afraid of death...?

Unlike Kasuka, Byakuya appeared much more composed. He tossed aside the now-broken 'Eric' with a touch of regret, as he had only recently started using that quinque.

"Apologies, but I'll be borrowing this…"

Byakuya picked up Kasuka's fallen quinque. Just gripping it, he could feel its superiority over his B rated 'Eric'.

"Investigator Byakuya..." Kasuka wasn't sure what to say, watching him pick up her quinque.

Normally, her quinque should not be used by anyone else.

But given the circumstances, even if she took it back from Byakuya, she wouldn't be able to handle the One-Eyed Owl.

The strength gap between her and the One-Eyed Owl had been made painfully clear.

Yet Byakuya… She was surprised to notice that the boy seemed to handle himself better against the One-Eyed Owl than she did…f

So… perhaps lending him the quinque was the best option...

"Bring it on, Owl..." Byakuya swung the long spear a couple of times to get a feel for it, then pointed the tip directly at the One-Eyed Owl, as if issuing a formal challenge.

He showed no sign of recognizing the Owl as Eto, nor did he give any indication that he knew her true identity.

Therefore, Eto had no reason to think Byakuya recognized her either.

She immediately responded, unleashing a barrage of feather-like blades from her back, all aimed densely at Byakuya.

Her kagune type was the same as her father Kuzen's—ukaku. These feather-like projectiles were a hallmark of ukaku, sharp and swift, making them lethal against a crowd of Investigators.

Now, Eto had changed her mind: she would turn Byakuya into a "porcupine" rendering him helpless but not dead, then sever one of his arms as punishment.

After all, she'd already given him a chance to escape, yet he chose to stay and fight.

Even though Eto held a measure of gratitude toward Byakuya, her twisted personality, shaped by life in the 24th Ward, meant she was capable of any brutal act.

Having the Mangekyo Sharingan allowed Byakuya to see Eto's moves before she even attacked, anticipating exactly where he needed to dodge.

When the feather blades shot from her back, he quickly shifted to the right, perfectly dodging every single blade.
