Just as Wu Tong was envisioning his martial soul's second awakening after consuming the Enlightenment Bodhi Flower, an untimely voice interrupted his thoughts.
"Little monster, after all this searching, have you found the herbs to cure us?"
Wu Tong turned to see Dugu Bo approaching, one hand protectively encircling Dugu Yan. The old man's soul power enveloped her like a shield, filtering the corrosive ice-fire energy.
"Of course I have. But how could I touch your treasures without your permission?" Wu Tong replied casually.
Dugu Bo's eyes flickered with surprise—and warmth. He hadn't expected such consideration. "Just take what you need. I trust your judgment. Besides," he clapped Wu Tong's shoulder, "you're solving our family's curse. A few herbs are nothing."
"I never thought you were stingy, old man. But these aren't ordinary plants. Best to clarify now to avoid future disputes." Wu Tong waved a hand, then subtly activated the recording function on his Video Soul Guide. He couldn't wait to capture their reactions.
"Precious? They're just weeds," Dugu Yan scoffed, mirroring her grandfather's skepticism.
Wu Tong maintained a neutral expression. "Ordinary herbs, no. But immortal herbs? 'Rare as celestial treasures, heard of once in a lifetime.' A single one can remake a person—turn trash into genius, genius into monster. They boost soul power without side effects… and can evolve martial souls."
"Evolve martial souls?!" Their jaws dropped.
Click. The Soul Guide immortalized their stunned faces perfectly.
"WU TONG!" Dugu Yan's shriek echoed as she summoned her martial soul, the Emerald Phosphorus Serpent. She lunged, but Wu Tong slithered away like an eel.
Dugu Bo intervened, snatching the device with a thump to Wu Tong's head. "Granddaughter's slave," Wu Tong muttered, rubbing his skull.
Ignoring him, Dugu Bo pressed, "This evolution—is it real?"
"Only with high compatibility between herb and martial soul," Wu Tong clarified. "But for you two, I've selected perfect matches. Evolution will purge your toxins permanently."
He led them to the first specimen: the Earth Dragon Golden Gourd, a fist-sized tuber glowing like molten gold. "Ideal for dragon-type or earth-attributed martial souls. For Sister Yan, it'll fuse her serpent bloodline with draconic traits, compensating for her foundation."
"But Yan'er has neither dragon nor earth attributes," Dugu Bo frowned.
"Ever heard of the 'Peerless Dragon-Serpent Couple'?" Wu Tong countered. "Their fusion proves serpent and dragon lineages are intrinsically linked. This gourd will bridge that gap, creating a new, superior martial soul."
He then explained the Dugu family's curse: an incomplete evolution generations ago had left their Emerald Phosphorus Serpents without venom sacs, forcing hosts to absorb toxins into their bodies. A proper evolution would rectify this.
As Dugu Yan and her grandfather debated who should take the gourd ("You first, Grandpa!" "No, it's tailored for you!"), Wu Tong interjected, "It's hers. I've another for you, old man."
He guided Dugu Bo to a fog-shrouded mound, where he unearthed the Nine-Change Venomous Dragon Vine—nine serpentine tendrils coiled like amethyst vipers. "Swallow the main stem first, then the vines whole. Your Title Douluo-level toxins should fuel the evolution."
Leaving Dugu Bo to his absorption, Wu Tong returned to the Enlightenment Bodhi Flower, his true prize awaiting.
