Chapter 149: Chapter 149: I Played Extra? Really?
That graceful figure had somehow slipped away without anyone noticing.
"Damn it, Mei Mei already left ahead of us. We need to retreat too," Kusakabe said, feeling more panicked now that they had lost a powerful ally.
"We can't. Running straight away won't work," Todo said, pressing his fingers against his forehead as he analyzed the enemy's stance.
"This guy is overconfident. He doesn't see us as a threat at all. But if we try to run, he'll take us seriously and kill us all on the spot."
Zenin Maki and the others gathered around, listening to his assessment.
"Fighting is our only option. We have to use his arrogance against him—keep attacking and look for a chance to split up and escape,"
Todo cracked his knuckles, a confident smile appearing on his face.
"He may be a Special Grade, but I don't plan on dying here."
"I still haven't met my dear Takada-chan!"
"Tsk. I was hoping to just run away, but I'll go along with your plan,"
Kusakabe said reluctantly. Todo's logic made sense, after all.
Besides, he wasn't confident he could outrun this fire-headed cursed spirit.
"As much as I hate trusting you, there's no other choice now," Zenin said, gripping her three-section staff. "Don't make me regret it, Todo."
"Of course."
"Then I'll go all out too!" Panda's body suddenly swelled with muscle, his head shifting into a more gorilla-like shape, with two large canine teeth jutting out from his mouth.
"Salmon, salmon!"
As the group took up their battle stances, Jogo grinned, revealing his sharp black teeth. "Are you done talking?"
"Then die."
He crouched down, pressing his hand against the ground.
The earth trembled violently as the street in front of them turned into scorching lava, surging toward them.
The five of them quickly scattered. Zenin Maki dashed forward, running along the walls of a building toward Jogo. She swung her three-section staff, the end snapping out like a whip aimed at Jogo's volcano-like head.
"Too slow!" Jogo sneered, raising his palm.
Boom!
A blast of fire erupted from his hand, blowing a massive hole through the building in front of him. The edges of the hole glowed orange from the heat.
The sound of something slicing through the air came from behind him. Jogo quickly turned his head, and in his single eye, the dark red staff rapidly grew larger.
It struck him hard, knocking him backward. But he quickly adjusted himself midair and retaliated, launching a blazing pillar of fire straight at Maki.
Boom!
Just as the fire shot out, Jogo and Zenin's positions suddenly switched.
The raging flames engulfed Jogo himself.
Though it didn't do much damage, the yellow, spotted cloak draped over his body caught fire.
Did my position just change? Was it that brat's technique?
An image of Todo's muscular figure flashed through Jogo's mind.
As the flames died down, Panda, now fully in gorilla mode, appeared behind Jogo, his massive fist crashing down toward the cursed spirit's volcano-like head.
Panda swung his fist, but the enemy saw it coming and easily blocked it with one hand. Just as it was about to burn Panda to ashes, that annoying clapping sound rang out again.
Todo Aoi appeared right where Jogo was, his hands pressed together in a confident stance, a bright glimmer in his eyes.
Is clapping the trigger for his technique?
Jogo narrowed his eyes, then smirked. A technique like this wouldn't take long to figure out!
Fast footsteps approached from behind. Kusakabe Atsuya moved like lightning, drawing his sword in an instant and swinging at the short figure, aiming to cut off its head.
But Jogo was even faster. With a light jump, he dodged the strike with ease.
"Fall!"
Inumaki Toge pulled down his high collar and shouted at Jogo, who was mid-air.
Cursed energy surged through his words, slamming into Jogo like an invisible force. He was yanked from the air and crashed into the ground, the impact cracking the pavement in all directions.
At the same time, Inumaki coughed up a mouthful of blood from the strain—his opponent's power was on a completely different level.
"Thanks, Inumaki!"
Playful Cloud tore through the air, striking Jogo's chin and sending him flying. Panda leaped into the air and followed up with a punch packed with cursed energy, landing a solid hit on Jogo's face.
The impact exploded with force, blasting Jogo away.
Through layers of feints and teamwork, they had finally managed to injure the unregistered special-grade curse in front of them.
But that only made it even angrier.
"You little brats!!!"
With Jogo's roar, the volcano on its head erupted violently, spewing flames into the air. Countless tiny insects emerged from the fire, their wings buzzing with an ear-piercing noise.
"Ember Insects!"
Jogo swung its arm, sending the swarm toward them like a barrage of arrows.
Inumaki stepped forward again, shielding the others behind him.
"Explode!"
Although the Ember Insects weren't as powerful as Jogo itself, their sheer numbers were overwhelming. Inumaki's throat burned in pain from the backlash, and no amount of throat spray could help.
But his cursed speech still worked.
The swarm froze in midair, then, after a brief pause, burst into explosions one after another, lighting up the night sky like fireworks.
The force of the blasts sent shockwaves across the area, tilting trees, shattering glass windows, and filling the air with sparkling debris.
A figure rushed through the fire—Jogo, its hands engulfed in flames, charging at them with a twisted expression.
Todo picked up a small rock from the ground, infused it with cursed energy, and threw it with all his strength toward the outskirts of Shinjuku.
*Clap!*
Jogo instantly vanished from right in front of them. A tiny stone dropped powerlessly from the air.
"Scatter!"
Before Todo's voice had even finished, the group had already split up, running in different directions.
Jogo landed on a rooftop, stunned for a second before realizing what had happened.
Three pillars of fire shot out from its head, accompanied by a deafening explosion. In the blink of an eye, the entire building beneath its feet melted away.
"You dare toy with me?!"
Jogo had memorized all their cursed energy signatures. It wouldn't stop until it burned every last one of them to ash.
Spreading out its senses, it locked onto the nearest familiar cursed energy and immediately gave chase.
—
"Finally got away…"
Kusakabe Atsuya ran through the streets, ignoring any curses he encountered. His only goal was to get as far away from the battlefield as possible.
"There's no way it'd come after me, right?" he muttered jokingly.
His luck couldn't be that bad.
…Right?
A massive wave of cursed energy suddenly surged behind him. The temperature around him spiked, and Kusakabe's face froze in horror.
The nightmare-like figure of Jogo had appeared before him once more.
And this time, there was no one else around.
"Eh…"
"You're kidding. Me? Against a special-grade?"
Kusakabe felt like crying.
