Chapter 75 - Meng Meng
When Tang Yuan noticed someone passing by, she snapped out of her daze, shyly pushing Jiang Zi away and wishing she could hide herself.
This, despite the fact that there was a live-streaming camera following them the entire time.
【You’re basically an old married couple. Why so shy?】
【Go ahead, kiss! No matter how long you do it, it won’t feel weird. Hehe.】
【Sister Jiang’s gaze is almost ravenous, as if she wants to dig out Tang Yuan’s very soul.】
Another staff member arrived and followed the process of asking Tang Yuan and Jiang Zi for their consent before drawing a question card to ask.
“Given that Meng Yao’er openly expressed her admiration for Jiang Tang before the show began, we’d like to ask: Did Meng Yao’er reveal her intentions while filming on set, or did she start pursuing you after joining the show? Also, now that Meng Yao’er seems to have shifted her interest to Su Qingyao, what are your thoughts on this?”
The question was long, but the answers were straightforward when broken down.
For the first question, Tang Yuan replied, “During filming, I wasn’t close to Meng Yao’er. Other than work-related interactions, we barely spoke.”
After some thought, she added on behalf of Jiang Zi, “I spent most of my time with Jiang Zi, and Meng Yao’er never approached her privately.”
Thus, it was clear that Meng Yao’er had started her wild pursuit after joining the variety show.
For the second question, Jiang Zi remained impassive as she said, “It’s hard to say.”
Tang Yuan instinctively followed up with a playful remark, “Well, good luck to her I guess! Hahaha!”
Seeing Tang Yuan laugh so cheerfully, Jiang Zi appeared a little confused. Her internet connection was too slow to get the dated joke, but Tang Yuan’s laughter was infectious, and she couldn’t help but smile.
Noticing that Jiang Zi was on a different channel, Tang Yuan cleared her throat and exaggerated her tone, “Yes, it’s hard to say. Every field is like a different world. Good luck to her!”
Jiang Zi tapped Tang Yuan’s nose lightly, “Another profound quote from a master?”
“Just something I saw online. Netizens would know, haha~”
After answering, they received a shell from the staff, finally believing the director’s claim—just answer, and you’ll pass.
It was remarkably easy.
Meanwhile, on the other side, the subject of their discussion, Meng Yao’er, was silently driving a car. Perhaps they had picked too quiet a route, or it was just deserted—there were no pedestrians, not even any staff members. Outside the glass walls, vibrant coral reefs stretched endlessly.
Meng Yao’er appeared focused on driving, but in truth, she was watching Su Qingyao’s every move, waiting for her to speak first. She wanted to grab Su Qingyao’s shoulders, press her against the seat, and demand why she wasn’t talking.
But she did none of those things. Instead, her driving slowed until she eventually stopped in the middle of the road, making it clear she wouldn’t move until someone broke the silence.
Su Qingyao saw through her little game immediately. After two minutes, she finally gave in.
“Miss Meng.”
Meng Yao’er gripped the steering wheel tightly. “I don’t like being called that.”
Su Qingyao glanced at her briefly before turning her gaze back to the coral reef outside the glass. A hint of irritation rose in her heart, but it was clear the child had grown up—she was harder to placate now.
In the end, Su Qingyao sighed and murmured so softly that it was barely audible, “Meng Meng.”
Meng Yao’er whipped her head around, her eyes lighting up with a mix of delight and disbelief. “Say it again?”
Su Qingyao pressed her lips together before repeating, “Meng Meng.”
Hearing the name she liked, Meng Yao’er seemed to come alive, her demeanor shifting back to a feigned coquettishness. She threw her arms around Su Qingyao’s, leaning close with a wide grin. “Qing Qing, Qing Qing~ I knew it—you still have me in your heart.”
【Meng Meng? Meng Meng??!】
【Can someone explain this? Is there a secretary here?】
【Did I miss an entire era? I’m a die-hard Yao Yao fan, and I have no idea when they met!】
【This is bad. Yao Yao can’t fall for a lunatic like this!】
【That aside, are we sure Yao Yao swings that way?】
“Qing Qing, don’t ignore me. I’m so heartbroken. Feel it—I think my heart’s breaking!” Meng Yao’er whined pitifully, grabbing Su Qingyao’s hand and pressing it to her chest, insisting she check.
Su Qingyao quickly pulled her hand away, brushing against Meng Yao’er lightly before withdrawing completely.
Lowering her gaze to hide her unease, Su Qingyao’s voice remained calm. “Alright, let’s drive. If we don’t move soon, we’ll miss lunch.”
This time, Meng Yao’er drove with uncharacteristic seriousness, her eyes sparkling with excitement, as if she were a girl newly in love. “Qing Qing, let’s be together, okay? We’re perfect for each other. No matter how far we go, we’ll always come back to each other. You coming on this show proves it, doesn’t it?”
Su Qingyao clenched her hands tightly, unconsciously digging her nails into her palms as if to use the pain to stay grounded. “I only came to make things clear with you.”
“Make what clear?” Meng Yao’er’s sweet smile didn’t falter. “There’s no misunderstanding between us.”
“Qing Qing, the cameras are rolling, and the microphones are on. Everything we do, every word we say, the audience hears it all.” Meng Yao’er steered the car forward, no longer paying attention to the underwater scenery.
Su Qingyao noticed her reluctance to discuss the matter, opened her mouth as if to speak, but ultimately said nothing.
Finally, they encountered their first staff member.
“You can earn a shell by answering a question. Do you two want to try?”
Su Qingyao responded quickly, “Go ahead.”
“Here’s a question from the audience: Are you two exes? Did you date before? If so, how long were you together?”
Su Qingyao had expected a knowledge-based question but was instead faced with a direct and personal query clearly meant to stir the pot.
Facing the camera, Su Qingyao maintained her usual serene smile. “We’re not exes, nor have we ever dated.”
Hearing this, Meng Yao’er didn’t deny it, but her spirits visibly dropped.
【Huh? Never dated? Then what’s all this about?】
【Their vibe feels just like me and my ex who ghosted me.】
【But Meng Yao’er’s eyes are red. Did Yao Yao lie?】
【With Meng Yao’er’s personality, if they’d really dated, she’d have refuted it. There must be more to this.】
Meng Yao’er slumped against the steering wheel, watching as Su Qingyao accepted the shell from the staff and placed it in their basket. Her lips twitched into a faint smile.
Out of nowhere, she called softly, “Qing Qing.”
“Even though our relationship has been unstable, breaking up and getting back together over six years, we’ve done everything couples do.”
Her voice was low, like a devil’s whisper. Su Qingyao’s pupils contracted, her body stiffened, and goosebumps rose on her skin.
Meng Yao’er’s smile turned wicked. “Don’t worry, Qing Qing. I turned off the microphone before I said that.”
It took Su Qingyao a moment to process. Her shoulders relaxed slightly as the fear subsided.
She had been genuinely scared. Scared that her and Meng Yao’er’s past would be exposed—those years of mistakes, devoid of light and grace.
It was her fault towards Meng Yao’er. That kind of past was better left buried forever. She hoped Meng Yao’er could return to a normal life.
