Chapter 42: Angel Beach

"Haha-Hahaha! So fluffy!" Luffy exclaimed, bouncing on a cloud. The Merry had come to a halt as they encountered a cloud blocking their way. First, Luffy tried to punch it—because why not?—but his hand bounced off. After thinking for zero seconds, he decided to hop on the cloud, because it felt right. Now, here they were, with no direction, as their captain played on a cloud. Soon, Chopper and Usopp joined in, while Nami racked her brain trying to figure out their bearings.

Lucas, meanwhile, had other ideas. Instead of playing on the clouds, he thought, "Hey, such a fluffy thing—why not make beds, pillows, maybe even a couch?" He began cutting up nearby clouds that one could bounce off of and stored them in his dimensional pocket for later use.

"Hey! Luffy, check this out!" Usopp called. "There's something over there."

"Oh yeah, Nami! We found a gate!" Luffy yelled.

"A gate!?" Nami wondered aloud. At least they found something. The Merry began sailing again, heading toward a waterfall of clouds.

"Yeah, you can't miss it. Once we get there, you'll see," Usopp said. Soon, they reached a big gate with the words 'Heaven's Gate' on it.

"Thank you," Robin said, as Lucas handed out grilled cheese sandwiches.

"I don't like this," Usopp remarked, feeling uneasy.

"What's there to fear? Maybe we're actually dead," Zoro jested.

"Well, that would explain the gate," Sanji added, causing Chopper to panic while Luffy got all happy.

"Our captain really is a lost cause," Lucas remarked.

"You're one to talk," Nami retorted.

"Huh! Look," Chopper pointed. An old lady with wings stood before them.

"Are those things even real?" Zoro muttered.

"If you want to go up, you must each pay a billion extol," the old lady said.

"A billion! We don't even know how much that is," Usopp exclaimed.

"Umm. So what if we don't have it?" Nami asked.

"You can still go up. I won't stop you," the old lady replied calmly.

"Then what even is your purpose here?" Usopp snapped.

"My job is simply to ascertain your intention, that's all," she said.

"If that's so, then why did you take pictures of us? What's your real intention here?" Lucas asked, his tone suspicious.

"I'm merely performing my duty by keeping track of everyone passing through these gates," she replied.

"Huh? Picture? What's that?" Chopper asked.

"That little device you see records images of people. With that, they'll have our exact faces if they start looking for us," Lucas explained.

"Woah. Wait, how do you know about it?" Chopper inquired.

"I used to have one before, from a shady—I mean, a highly trusted merchant who claimed it was a rare item from a land in the clouds," Lucas replied, fabricating a story. The others had no reason to doubt him.

"Wait, so you mean to tell me you knew about Skypiea all this time?" Nami turned to him, her anger rising.

"I mean... Well... Hey, look, the old lady is still waiting for our answer," Lucas dodged the question.

"We don't have the money, okay?" Nami yelled, dismissing the old lady.

"But we still want to go up. Is that cool with you, old lady?" Luffy asked.

"Really? If you insist, then okay," she replied without hesitation.

"How strange," Usopp remarked. As the old lady stood there, something from below the Merry rose up, lifting the Straw Hat ship.

"Whaa! Something came up!" the Straw Hats panicked.

"Okay, take 'em up," the old lady said. The creature took the Merry up the waterfall, causing panic among the crew. But as they were carried up, their nervousness turned to awe. They gazed upon Skypiea, the land in the clouds. The Merry landed with a thud near an empty beach.

It didn't take long for some of the Straw Hats (Luffy) to explore the beach after confirming they were alright.

"Wait, you said that old lady has images of all of us, right? Does that mean they already know who to look for since we came here without paying?" Nami asked, worried.

"There's no use worrying about it now," Lucas said with a shrug. This pissed Nami off—not only because he withheld information about Skypiea, but also because she was concerned about their identities being exposed.

"So, ummm. Do I drop the anchor or not? I mean, does this sea even have a bottom?" Zoro asked, but nobody really cared. Luffy, Usopp, and Chopper were already playing on the cloud beach, and Sanji soon joined them. Zoro dropped the anchor and called it a day.

"It seems everyone is excited," Robin remarked, standing next to Zoro.

"Yeah, I guess," Zoro replied.

"Aren't you going to join them?" she asked.

"I am, actually," he said.

"Look, I found a strange fruit!" Luffy shouted, brimming with excitement. He took a bite but the fruit wasn't budging.

"Hey, do you guys hear that?" Chopper asked. They kept quiet and listened. They heard a melody playing and saw a young woman playing the harp on a cloud hill.

"Awww! She looks just like an angel," Sanji said, his eyes turning into hearts.

"Heso!" The woman turned as the Straw Hats approached her. She greeted them warmly. "Could you be travelers from the Blue Sea?"

"Yeah, we flew here from the bottom not long ago," Luffy replied, holding two of those tough fruits.

"Then welcome to Skypiea. This is Angel Beach," the woman greeted.

"Do you by any chance know how to open this fruit?" Luffy asked.

"Oh, that's a Konasshu. If you want to drink it, you have to open it here," she explained, cutting a small circle on the fruit. Luffy was already drooling. Once she opened it, he immediately drank it, savoring the taste.

"Wow, so good," he exclaimed, his eyes sparkling with delight.

As they got acquainted with the woman, they heard a voice calling from the sea. They turned to see a person riding a strange contraption heading towards them at great speed.

"Conis! Heso!" the person yelled, waving energetically.

"Oh Dad, heso!" she responded with a smile.

"What does that mean anyway?" Luffy remarked, scratching his head.

"Hey! Don't you think you should slow down?" Sanji yelled as the person came closer and closer to the beach.

"Right! Sorry, I'll start slowing down now," he said in a cheery tone, but for some reason, he only seemed to get faster, heading straight for the tree.

Lucas acted quickly, using Gravattack's powers to create a gravitational field, stopping the man just inches away from crashing.

"Whoa, that was close!" the man exclaimed, dismounting his contraption with a nervous laugh. "Thank you, young man," he said, addressing Lucas.

"No problem," Lucas replied, reverting to his normal form. "Are you okay?"

"Yes, yes, I'm fine. Thank you again," the man said, patting himself down to check for any damage.

"This is my father, Pagaya," Conis introduced, smiling at the crew.

"Nice to meet you," Pagaya said, bowing slightly. "Welcome to Skypiea."

"Thanks for the warm welcome," Luffy said, grinning. "I'm Luffy, and this is my crew."

"What an interesting group you have here," Pagaya remarked, his eyes twinkling with curiosity.

"Could you tell us more about this place?" Nami asked, trying to mask her irritation with curiosity.

"Of course," Pagaya replied. "But first, let's head back to our home. We can have a proper conversation there."

The Straw Hats followed Pagaya and Conis to their home, intrigued by the new surroundings and eager to learn more about the mysterious land they had found themselves in.
