Chapter 13: Shadows of War
The night air was crisp, filled with the faint scent of pine and damp earth as we left the Cullen estate behind. No one spoke as we moved through the trees, our steps silent but deliberate. The meeting had gone as expected—shock, curiosity, and a quiet undercurrent of fear.
The Cullens had never encountered anything like us before. Not only had we defied the Volturi, but we had crushed their guards without a second thought. To them, we were an anomaly, a mystery wrapped in power they couldn't yet comprehend.
As we approached our home, Victor finally broke the silence.
"Well, that was fun," he said, shoving his hands into his pockets. "Did you see their faces? It was like they'd just met actual gods."
Joan let out a short laugh. "In a way, they did. Jason isn't just some vampire anymore—he's something more." She turned her golden eyes to me. "And we still don't know the extent of it."
I remained quiet, my mind drifting back to my transformation. The raw energy that had surged through me, the way my body had reshaped itself into something beyond even the most powerful vampires. I could feel it still—an ever-present hum beneath my skin, like I was standing at the edge of an abyss filled with infinite power, waiting for me to reach out.
Selene's voice pulled me from my thoughts. "The Volturi will move quickly. They won't let this insult go unanswered."
I nodded. "Which means we need to be ready."
Aurora, who had remained quiet throughout the walk, crossed her arms. "Do we prepare for war?"
"Yes," I said without hesitation. "We won't sit and wait for them to come knocking. We need to anticipate their next move."
Luca frowned. "They'll gather their strongest. They won't make the mistake of underestimating us again."
Selene's expression darkened. "Then we make sure that when they come, they don't leave."
The next morning, I stood in the open clearing behind our home, the rising sun casting long shadows across the earth. My coven surrounded me, their eyes sharp and focused.
"We're not just preparing for a fight," I said. "We're ensuring victory. The Volturi have ruled for centuries because they've never faced anything stronger than them. That changes now."
Victor cracked his knuckles. "Finally, something exciting."
"They'll use every trick they have," Joan added. "That means their gifted ones. Alec can take away our senses. Jane can inflict pain. Chelsea can manipulate bonds and loyalty."
I smirked. "None of that will work on us."
My power had already proven itself beyond the Volturi's comprehension. Their illusions, their mental tricks—they would mean nothing against me. But my coven still needed to be prepared for anything.
"Victor, Aurora, Luca—you'll take point on offense. Keep them on the defensive," I continued. "Joan, you'll coordinate our movements. Dante, Selene—you'll handle anyone who tries to flank us."
Selene nodded, her eyes gleaming with anticipation. "I'll make sure they regret it."
I turned my gaze to the trees, reaching out with my power. I had already created my coven—beings as strong as the ancients, beautiful and deadly. But I needed more.
With a thought, I extended my will. The very fabric of reality bent to my command. Shadows swirled, energy crackling in the air as figures began to take shape—more vampires, their forms perfect, their power absolute.
The air thrummed with energy as my new creations opened their eyes, their gazes filled with understanding and purpose.
Joan watched with something akin to awe. "You really can just… create life."
I turned to her. "And now, we have an army."
The days passed in tense anticipation. The Cullens remained distant, wary yet unintrusive. They knew what was coming, but they had yet to decide where they stood.
Then, on the fourth night, Alice appeared.
She stood at the edge of the forest, her golden eyes scanning our home before settling on me. She looked hesitant, but also determined.
Selene tensed beside me, but I raised a hand. "Let her speak."
Alice took a step forward. "They're coming," she said simply. "Aro, Caius, Marcus… the entire guard. I saw it."
The air grew heavier.
"They've never mobilized like this before," she continued. "They're not just coming to destroy you. They're coming to erase you from existence."
A slow smile spread across my lips. "Then let them come."
Alice hesitated, then said, "We haven't decided where we stand in this. But if the Cullens don't fight, it won't be because we're against you. It'll be because we're trying to survive."
I met her gaze. "Understood."
She nodded, then disappeared back into the trees.
Selene exhaled sharply. "So, it begins."
I turned to my coven. "Prepare yourselves. The Volturi aren't just coming for us. They're coming for the world as they know it."
Joan smirked. "Then let's shatter that world."
And with that, the final battle was set in motion.
