Twilight's Wolves

Chapter 3: Sam

After school, Dean was there to pick Leah up.

"Hey," he said opening his arms for a hug.

"Hey Dean," said Seth cheekily, slipping in between, stealing the hug.

"You little brat!" said a mostly annoyed, slightly amused Leah.

Chuckling Dean hugged him back, "How are you squirt?"

"School sucks," stated Seth matter a factly.

"I bet," said Dean, throwing an open arm to Leah who came in for a side hug. Draping his arm around her, they walked out shoulder to shoulder.

"You're so warm, you shouldn't waste such great hugs on my sister," said Seth.

Leah reaches around and wacks him.

"Ow!" exclaims Seth rubbing his head, "See what I mean, she's a brute."

"I'll show you a brute," said Leah.

"Ah, Dean save me," Seth ducking behind him.

He grinned keeping a tight hold of her shoulder so she couldn't escape and attack her brother, "Alright Leah, you know he's only doing to get a rise out of you."

"Hmph," she snorted only to struggle once more to escape when Seth stuck his tongue out.

"Seth," Deah said pointedly.

"Sorry," Seth apologized.

"I heard you dropped out, wish I could," said Seth dejectedly, thinking of their prior conversation.

"Don't even think about it, Mom and Dad would throw a fit," said Leah feeling somewhat conflicted knowing Seth was likely to turn in the future.

"Yeah, and it's not like I had much of a choice," said Dean.

"Why?" asked Seth curiously.

"Just didn't," said Dean not bothering to explain.

"But if you did, would you have gone back?" asked Seth.

"Not on your life," Dean grinned.

Seth grinned, "Knew it."

"Hey Dean, want to play some video games with me?" asked Seth giving him a hopeful look.

"Actually I need to speak to Dean, alone, we'll see you at home later Seth," said Leah.

"Tch, you don't have to lie to me, I know you're going to go kiss, Dean when you get bored of her come join me," said Seth walking away.

"Annoying Brat! Stop trying to steal my boyfriend!" Leah called out to his retreating form.

Dean grinned, "So, where do you want to kiss?"

"Later, something did happen at school, Emily sent Sam home cause he was running a high temperature even though he said he was fine, she wouldn't take it and had him go home to be safe," said Leah seriously.

"Huh, guess I'm really not going to be the only one anymore, I don't know how I feel about that," said Dean.

"Do you want to be the only one?" asked a confused Leah.

"No, not exactly, it's just I've been the only one for so long, it'll be weird for a while I guess," said Dean.

"It'll be better having a pack, wolves need packs," said Leah trying to comfort him.

"You're probably right, anyways I should head on over and check in on him, be there for him and whatnot," said Dean.

"Right," said Leah following him.

"Whoa, where do you think you're going?" he asked.

"With you," she said.

"No, you're not, the first change will be dangerous and confusing, I'm not letting you put yourself in harm's way, if you really want to help then go find Emily and make sure she doesn't bother us until it's over," said Dean.

"Fine," said Leah brows furrowed, "Should I tell her what's going on?"

"I don't know, but it'd probably be best coming from Sam, don't you think?" said Dean.

"Look there's Emily now, go cut her off, I'll take care of Sam," said Dean.

"Hey Emily," Leah called out waving.

"Lee-Lee, what are you doing here?" asked Emily.

"Dean had something important to talk with Sam about and I tagged along, how about we hang out while they talk business," said Leah.

"Sure, just let me check in on Sam first to make sure he's okay," said Emily.

Leah grabbed her as she tried to get around, "Come on Emily, Dean said it was super important and can't wait, Sam will be fine until they're done."

"I guess," said Emily looking at her with scrutiny.

"Emily?" Sam called out the front door as Dean cut him off.

"Hey Sam we need to talk," said Dean pushing him back inside.

"See he's fine, come on let's go, we'll be back later, when's the last time we even hung out, just the two of us since we got boyfriends," said Leah turning her around.

"Alright, that does sound good," said Emily looking over her shoulder.

"Dean?" What do you want?" asked Sam.

"This discussion would be better outside," said Dean inviting him outback in an open hand gesture.

Looking at Dean questioningly, Sam relented, leading the way out. Turning around arms crossed, "What do you want Dean?"

"Haven't figured it out yet? The high temperature the dull pulsating ever-growing ache inside you?" asked Dean.

Sam's eyebrows furrowed, "What do you know?"

"Think Sam, Think," Sam looked on confused, "The stories of our ancestors," His eyes open in thought, "You know what this is you know what you are... (He shifts into a wolf)... (Say it!)" said Dean, the last part in wolf form, echoing in Sam's head.

"Wolf," Sam whispers in awe before his form busts into a giant black wolf.

Confused and afraid, his fight-or-flight response kicked in, and while his first instinct was to fight, all such thoughts left him the minute he laid eyes on the golden wolf in front of him, so he took off into the woods.

'Well, that could have gone better,' Dean thought.

(Sam, where you going Sam?) said Dean giving chase which only made Sam run all the harder having the golden beast chase him.

Slowing down to a trot he let Sam gain enough distance to catch his breath and calm down.

He comes upon him later checking himself out in a pond.

Gaining control of his thoughts, Sam yelled them out angrily at his golden foe, (WHAT DID YOU DO TO ME!?) His wolf snarling.

(Nothing, you know the stories as well as anyone,) Dean replied keeping a respectful distance.

(The Stories! The Stories Aren't Real!) growled Sam.

(Right, this is all a dream you'll soon wake up from,) came the dry response from Dean.

(Fuck You!) Sam barked.

(Look I'll admit I could have gone about this better, I may have let my impatience get the better of me, but what's done is done, now are you going to keep being stubborn, or, let me help you?) asked Dean.

He had better things he'd rather be doing than wasting days waiting for all this shit to occur naturally. Time better spent hanging out with Leah or killing Vamps or anything else really.

Receiving no reply Deah moved closer to the angry black wolf who shrunk back making him pause, the last thing he wanted was to chase him again. (Listen, you need to learn to shift back, calm yourself and clear your mind, think of your human self, and will yourself into being that man again.)

It took some time, a lot of snarling, barking, and growling as Sam paced back and forth, especially when Dean tried to remind him to calm himself which only seemed to make things worse.

Dean sighed lying down, keeping silent and patiently watching over the fidgeting black wolf.

Later that night, Sam finally got the hang of it only to grow shy from his nakedness, and Deans when he shifted back to communicate with him.

"Can't say I'm pleased to see you naked, but you're going to have to get over that shit, we'll likely be seeing each other nude a lot more in the future so get used to it," said Dean finding a comfortable spot to sit. "Take a seat, we go a lot of shit to go over and we might as well do it now."

"Sure, I'll just not care then," Sam snorted sitting awkwardly on a flat stone, trying to hide his junk.

"You'll get used to it," said Dean.

"Easy for you to say," grunted Sam, "How long have you been a wolf?"

"I've always been a wolf," said Dean.

"Is that why you stopped going to school?... Wait you said always?" asked Sam.

"Yeah."

"Then why did you stop?" questioned Sam after a moment of silence.

"Oh boy, are you always this slow?" asked Dean.

"Fuck You!" Sam snapped.

"The stories Sam, remember the stories, how many times do I have to repeat myself?" asked Dean.

"I know the fucking stories about our ancestors supposedly being, or I guess were wolves, what does that have to do..." Sam trailed off recalling the rest.

"Finally figured it out?" asked Dean amusedly.

"The cold ones," whispered Sam, "The cold ones are real?" he asked seriously.

"Now you know why I dropped out, it was right around the time the first nomads showed up in Forks after such a long time. They heard about our reservation and thought it would be a quick easy meal off the beaten path. Thinking none would be the wiser as they attacked and drank all they wanted, but they didn't know about me," said Dean proudly.

"I can't believe this is happening to me," Sam groaned, holding his head in disbelief.

"Look I know this must be a lot to take in for someone who lived like a human for so long, but trust me, being a wolf is better, you no longer have to fear getting sick or dying in some stupid accident, and your strong now, strong enough to protect those you care about, trust me, you'll learn to love it, it's the best," said Dean confidently.

Sam shook his head and released his head with a deep sigh as he looked up thinking about his life and what it all meant. All that hard work to make a better life for him and his mom, was it all for nothing.

Picturing Emily, "Oh god, Emily, my mom, what do I say? Can I even tell them?" asked Sam.

"Sure why not, it's not like a secret, more like an open secret since people forgot and no longer believe. It just sort of became that way, and since I never needed to phase in public I never did, though I would have never lied should anyone ask. The council would beg to differ though, for some reason got in their heads that it was best that everyone forgot and let the young ones have their peaceful childhood or whatever drivel they came up with," said Dean.

"And then again it would be bad if the vamps stumbled upon the information and decided to come in force to wipe us out," Dean thoughtfully mumbled to himself. "Or the humans."

"The council knows, of course they know," said Sam thinking of all the old men.

"Yeah, they lived up on the stories with first-hand experience, the spirits may have skipped their generation, but some of them were alive to bear witness to the last," said Dean.

"Why did they skip their generation?" asked Sam curiously.

"Well our ancestors made the treaty with the Cullens, who claimed this area as their territory, driving out other problematic vamps, giving us a pseudo-peace for a while, and when the Cullens left, it gave our spirit ancestors a chance to fix some of their mistakes and help protect the future of the tribe," explained Dean.

"What mistakes?" asked Sam.

"Anger issues for one were a big problem in the past, but you'll find now that not only will we have complete control, we are also the strongest wolves to have ever been, and if you try and pick up that rock you're sitting on, you'll find we're no pushovers as humans either," said Dean.

Looking at him skeptically, Sam slowly got up and hesitantly bent down, wrapping his hands around the rock and hefting it up faster than he expected hitting himself in the face.

"Argh, Fuck!" more in annoyed surprise than actual pain.

Dean burst out laughing, "Yeah, you'll need to learn to control your strength before we go back, wouldn't want you accidentally hurting someone."

"Right, I think it's time you told me about the cold ones," said Sam sitting back down.
