Chapter 21: Chapter 21: The Virgin's Vow
[3rd POV]
Upon hearing Ares' words, Aphrodite was so shocked her face turned pale, and the gods around them started whispering.
"Ares, do you not hear what we are talking about?"
Zeus paused for a moment before addressing his son, "Aphrodite wants to marry you."
"I heard."
Ares replied, "But why should I agree to her? Just because she wants to marry me, does that mean I have to say yes?"
"That's not the point. You can refuse if you want, but..."
Zeus looked at Aphrodite and hesitated, "Ares, is there something wrong with you?"
"What's wrong with me?"
Ares retorted, "Can you name a god from the four generations who's healthier than I am?"
"Well, if you're in perfectly good, and such a beautiful woman is asking you to marry her, why wouldn't you accept?"
Zeus rubbed his white beard, utterly puzzled, "Do you prefer men?"
"You're talking nonsense!"
Ares shouted angrily, nearly jumping out, "Zeus, you're insulting my divine dignity!"
"Yeah, what are you talking about?"
Hera added, giving her husband a disgruntled glance, "Our son doesn't have all these weird interests."
"Well, handsome boys aren't completely off the table."
Zeus muttered softly under his breath, making sure Hera didn't hear.
"However, Ares..."
Hera turned to her son, beginning another lecture, "You're already at an age where it's time to start thinking about getting a spouse. You're strong and handsome, and you and Aphrodite are like a perfect match. The children you have together would surely be powerful gods. If you have more children, it will help make Olympus even more thriving!"
"But I'm not done having fun yet! I don't want to get married yet!"
Ares responded, acting like a spoiled child.
"Enough!"
Seeing Ares' behavior, Poseidon, who Aphrodite had just rejected, shouted angrily, "This woman just rejected both me and Apollo, and now she chooses you, and you turn her down? Ares, what do you mean by that? Are you saying that the things we fought for mean nothing to you... Do you look down on me and Apollo?"
After hearing this, Ares glanced at Apollo and, sure enough, saw him with a frown, looking a bit upset.
After all, Ares was the kind of god who might forget his godly status for a friend.
Apollo was normally very clear-headed, but he could get a little carried away when it came to beautiful things.
At this moment, Ares realizes that Poseidon and Apollo are both putting pressure on him. If he didn't agree soon, he would likely offend Apollo, with whom he had worked hard to get along, and his uncle Poseidon.
Fortunately, among the gods present, Ares had his close friend Athena there to back him up.
Ares gritted his teeth, clenched his fists to keep his composure, and said, "I never had such thoughts, Poseidon. You're trying to mess with the relationship between me and Apollo! Even you should take responsibility for your words!"
"Oh?"
Poseidon sneered, his voice laced with sarcasm, "Then tell me, why don't you want to marry Aphrodite?"
"Because of Athena!"
Ares pointed his finger towards the Goddess of Wisdom, Athena, standing among the gods, holding her wine cup and watching the scene.
After being pointed at, Athena looked shocked, almost as if she was thinking, 'How did I get dragged into this?'
However, Ares didn't care about her reaction and continued speaking passionately:
"Getting married means having children with my wife, and having children will waste my time. That means I won't have the time to train and study magic. If that happens, when will I ever be able to beat Athena?!"
'With that attitude, you might never beat her.'
Zeus thought to himself, but since he couldn't speak badly about his son in front of Hera, he said, "Having children doesn't take up much time, Ares. It's great that you focus on training but also need to rest and relax sometimes."
"I don't believe it!"
Ares looked around, stopping at Athena, and said, "Unless Athena agrees to marry one of the gods present here, then I'll marry Aphrodite."
Ares' words seemed like something he said without thinking, especially since it matched his usual reckless and thoughtless nature.
But this time, what Ares said actually struck a chord with Zeus.
Zeus turned to Athena with a grin and said, "Athena, I think Ares' idea is great. It's also a perfect opportunity for you to find yourself a husband today. We could have a double celebration here on Mount Olympus—such a great, wonderful thing."
He pointed to all the gods at the banquet and continued, "Look, all the well-known gods are here today. Pick one you like, and I'll make it happen."
Although Zeus might have had some strange ideas in his head, as soon as he said those words, the gods, who had been feeling bored, suddenly became excited again.
In terms of beauty, Athena may not compare to Aphrodite, but she was still an incredibly beautiful goddess. Moreover, she possesses a noble presence that is even more elegant than Aphrodite's, like the queen of Olympus.
This made the gods feel a strong desire to win her over.
Furthermore, she was the only goddess among the Twelve Olympians, aside from Zeus, with the most powerful divine authority and influence.
If someone married her, they would undoubtedly be a step toward incredible advancement and success.
'Damn Ares, you big stupid gorilla!'
Athena secretly hated the situation, but she still had to keep a polite smile on her face. She looked at Zeus with a smile and said, "Zeus, I appreciate your kind offer, but I'm afraid I have no intentions of getting married."
She paused for a moment, then raised her three fingers and suddenly swore to the heavens:
"I swear by the name of Pallas Athena, to the world, that I shall never marry and will remain chaste throughout my life. If I ever break this vow, let everything be taken from me, and may I be cast into the lowest depths of Tartarus to suffer the most excruciating torments in the deepest pits of hell!"
As Athena swore by her true name to the world, she immediately received a response from the universe.
In that moment, a force of restraint surrounded her, granting Athena the protection of the world itself. Now, she had the right to refuse any requests from the King of Gods, Zeus.
As soon as Zeus felt Athena's vow take effect, Zeus' expression darkened. Even he could no longer force Athena, who was protected by this divine restraint.
He sighed and said, "Alright, if that's what you want, I'll respect my daughter's wishes."
In this way, Athena gained something while losing something as well. She managed to preserve her last line of defense, but in doing so, she closed off the possibility of forming an unbreakable alliance with another male god.
In the end, Zeus had gained more than she had.
However, before Zeus could fully collect his thoughts, he was interrupted by the voice of his son, who seemed to be a bit crazy.
"Hmph, just as expected from you, Athena. To think you could come up with such a plan to deny your own desires and focus on getting stronger.
Ares sneered with his hands on his hips.
"However, do you think this will stop my determination? No—impossible! If you have something, I will have it too!"
Then, Ares raised his three fingers and, copying Athena, and swore to the heavens:
"I swear, by the name of Ares, the God of War, to the world, that I shall never marry and will remain chaste. If I ever break this vow, let everything be taken from me, and may I be cast into the lowest depths of Tartarus to suffer the most excruciating torments in the deepest pits of hell!"
A/N: Remember, the female lead is Hecate, and he will eventually break this vow or oath. No one wants to die a virgin.
