Chapter 166: A Not-So-Distant Return (Part 1)
In the heart of what used to be Konoha's bustling commercial district, Jiraiya wandered aimlessly.
His long white mane of hair hung loosely over his black robe, and the clack of his wooden geta echoed faintly on the quiet streets. His sharp eyes scanned the unfamiliar surroundings, filled with both surprise and unease.
"I've only been away from Konoha for a little over a year, and yet... so much has changed. What in the world happened here?"
Frowning deeply, Jiraiya stepped forward and stopped a passing elderly woman. "Excuse me, ma'am. Where have all the shopkeepers gone? Why aren't there any food stalls or restaurants left around here?"
Once the liveliest hub of commerce in Konoha, the district now seemed like a shell of its former self.
Most civilian-run shops had vanished without a trace. Only the Nara clan's medicinal herb shop seemed to retain its former glory, with a steady stream of patrons entering and exiting its doors.
Nearby, however, the Yamanaka clan's flower shop sat idle. A strikingly beautiful woman arranged flowers absentmindedly, not even bothering to greet the occasional passerby.
Disheartened, Jiraiya made his way to where "Ichiraku Ramen" once stood, craving a steaming bowl of pork bone ramen.
But to his dismay, the familiar ramen stand was gone, and all the eateries he used to frequent had vanished along with it.
"Ah, you must be from another village, huh?" The elderly woman chuckled, pointing toward a distant barrier shimmering in the sunlight.
"See that big, fancy barrier over there? Just head that way. You'll find everything you're looking for."
Her words left Jiraiya momentarily speechless, a dark cloud forming over his expression. A loyal, second-generation Konoha shinobi mistaken for an outsider—what a blow to his pride.
"Thank you, ma'am..."
Looking toward the barrier in the distance, Jiraiya sighed heavily.
"Even the elders of the village know about barrier techniques these days. Looks like I have the Uchiha clan to thank for this..."
Unlike Konoha's nearly invisible, dome-shaped barrier, the one surrounding the Uchiha compound was bold and ostentatious. Its black glow pulsed menacingly, serving as a clear warning to any potential intruders.
"Four Violet Flames Formation...? No, it can't be. The Uchiha wouldn't go so far as to set up such a lethal sealing technique in the middle of the village..."*
From a distance, Jiraiya carefully observed the barrier, analyzing its structure with his extensive knowledge of ninjutsu. The more he studied it, the more alarmed he became.
Though the chakra flowing through the barrier seemed calm and balanced on the surface, Jiraiya's finely tuned senses, honed by Sage Mode training, detected a deep and dangerous undercurrent lurking beneath its tranquility.
He wasn't wrong to be cautious. The Uchiha clan's barrier was nothing like the lackluster defenses Konoha once had. Even Orochimaru would find it a challenge to breach its formidable layers.
This intricate defensive system was the product of Fuma, Kushina, and Minato's combined expertise. After countless hours of brainstorming, research, and refinement, the trio had constructed an impenetrable stronghold.
The outermost layer was based on the Uzumaki clan's "Dual Form Seal," a defensive technique capable of withstanding most A-rank jutsu.
Unlike traditional barriers, it didn't rely on sensory capabilities but instead focused purely on fortification.
Remarkably, maintaining this layer required only a modest amount of chakra—something a handful of Jonin could easily handle on a daily basis.
This system proved so effective that even the stealthy and cunning White Zetsu couldn't breach it.
The outer layer acted like an unyielding steel wall, wrapping the Uchiha compound in an airtight defense. While simple in concept, its execution was nothing short of genius.
The middle layer, designed by Minato, incorporated his Flying Raijin technique for sensory purposes.
If anyone attempted to force their way through the barrier, Minato would immediately detect the intrusion and summon the Uchiha police force for a swift response.
Notably, every member of the police force bore a Flying Raijin seal on their left sleeve, which not only served as a mobile network of teleportation points for Minato but also allowed them to call for reinforcements if ambushed.
A small surge of chakra into the seal would alert Minato, who could then coordinate reinforcements in real time.
The innermost layer of the barrier was Fuma's crowning achievement: the "Uchiha Flame Formation."
This ancient and powerful technique summoned the wrath of the earth's flames, forming an impenetrable wall of fire that even a Tailed Beast would struggle to breach.
Together, these three layers formed a seamless and impregnable defense, ensuring the safety of the Uchiha clan's heartland.
Jiraiya shook his head, his expression grim. Before he realized it, two small toads had appeared on his shoulders—none other than the Sage Toads, Fukasaku and Shima.
"Jiraiya-boy, this barrier is no joke. I can sense Uzumaki chakra at its core, but there's also an unmistakable trace of the Uchiha's dangerous energy."
Fukasaku clasped his hands together, gathering natural energy to amplify his perception, "In terms of complexity, it rivals the Great Barrier of Mount Myoboku. Only someone at the pinnacle of the sealing arts could have created this…"
"But the Uzumaki clan was wiped out over a decade ago," Shima interjected, her tone puzzled. "And what's with that faint Uchiha energy signature? How peculiar…"
Fukasaku rubbed his temples, clearly still groggy from being summoned mid-nap.
Ever since the Great Toad Sage designated Jiraiya as their chosen one, the Sage Toads had been providing him with unprecedented support. At a moment's notice, they could channel natural energy for him or even aid him in battle.
In essence, Fukasaku and Shima now functioned as living reservoirs of natural energy for Jiraiya, allowing him to sustain Sage Mode for far longer than he could alone.
"Well, it's a long story..." Jiraiya forced a wry smile.
Fuma's recruitment of Kushina was a particularly sore subject for him. Not only had Fuma stolen one of his students, but he had also won Kushina's heart in the process.
Jiraiya couldn't help but feel like life had dealt him a double blow, "Guess I'll just have to check it out for myself."
Sighing, Jiraiya began walking toward the Uchiha compound.
