Chapter 60: Chapter 61: Battling the Evil Ghost
In the afternoon, Long Xiaoshan ran to the market, bought a rooster, and got some black dog blood, then he looked for a Peach Wood Sword.
However, there wasn't one available, so in the end, he got a peach branch and carved it into the shape of a wooden sword himself.
Other items were clearly not so easy to procure.
He could only make do with these for now.
He also bought an electric stove, a medicine pot, and some Chinese herbs.
Upon returning to Shen Yuerong's office, she was visibly scared. Long Xiaoshan brewed her some medicinal soup with the Chinese herbs, which she drank. After drinking the soup, Shen Yuerong felt much more spirited, felt the nourishment of vital energy, and her body was not so cold anymore.
They waited until Shen Yuerong got off work.
The two of them prepared to return to Shen Yuerong's residence, Long Xiaoshan picked up the paperweight from the desk.
"Little Xiaoshan, what do you need that for?"
"I'm just having a look," he replied.
Long Xiaoshan always felt that there was something strange about the paperweight as he picked it up.
Shen Yuerong did not say anything.
The two of them left the office building and walked towards the residential building in the back.
Along the way, many villagers called out, "Director Shen."
Their gazes carried curiosity and gossip, for they saw the noble and beautiful director taking a young man to her residence, an occurrence that had never happened before. Shen Yuerong might seem approachable, but in reality, she was quite proud, and men could not get close to her.
Shen Yuerong knew well that bringing Long Xiaoshan back with her would provoke some rumors.
But thinking of the ghost, she felt unwell, and couldn't care less about any idle talk that might arise.
When they arrived at the residential building, Long Xiaoshan noticed it was even more desolate. Dive into more tales on m,vl-em-py-r
Shen Yuerong's room was on the west side.
It was a two-bedroom with a separate bathroom.
However, it was clearly retrofitted afterward.
As soon as they opened the door and entered, a chill rushed at them. Long Xiaoshan felt a coldness all over, and Shen Yuerong shivered even more.
"It's so cold, Sister Shen, how can you live here?"
"The conditions in the countryside are not good, and this is the best set of rooms available. The others don't have independent bathrooms. They said this room is cooler in the summer. Living here, it is indeed true. I don't even need a fan and still have to cover myself with a blanket," Shen Yuerong explained.
Long Xiaoshan shook his head. This was the downside of not understanding medicine: although the house was cool to live in during the summer, it held heavy dampness. Even without a ghost, it was easy to fall ill.
He looked out the window and furrowed his brow again. A giant locust tree blocked the house, not letting in any sunlight.
For a locust tree, one tree meant one ghost.
A house unseen by sunlight, with a ghost tree growing beside.
Such a Feng Shui layout didn't need a grandmaster to identify; even ordinary people with a little knowledge of Feng Shui could tell it was bad. The villagers were superstitious. Didn't anybody realize something was wrong?
"Xiaoshan, what should we do now?" Shen Yuerong was clearly reliant on Long Xiaoshan now.
Even the strongest of women have a soft side in their hearts.
In need of a strong support, Long Xiaoshan said, "Now, we can only wait and see how things go. Sister Shen, don't worry. I won't let the ghost hurt you."
"Mm, Xiaoshan, thank you," Shen Yuerong grabbed Long Xiaoshan's arm.
If it weren't for Long Xiaoshan being with her, she would be a bit scared to even enter the house.
There was a stove in the house. The two of them cooked and ate two bags of instant noodles, then sat there waiting.
Time passed little by little until late at night.
Seeing Shen Yuerong looking exhausted, Long Xiaoshan let her lie down on the bed first.
As the sky darkened further, the room felt increasingly eerie. Long Xiaoshan was on full alert, keeping his Spirit Eye open and watching over every corner of the room.
Midnight arrived.
The paperweight on the desk in the room began to emit wisps of black air, and the symbols within it flickered with a green light.
Then, the black air gradually condensed into a shadowy figure of a ghost.
After the ghostly figure appeared, it spotted Shen Yuerong on the bed and immediately lunged at her.
"It really is the ghost from this paperweight!"
Long Xiaoshan abruptly stood up.
He grabbed the black dog blood in his hand and splashed it toward the ghostly figure.
Whoosh!
The ghost was showered with black dog blood and let out a piercing shriek, akin to the shrill cry of a night owl. Shen Yuerong, already unsettled, jolted up from the bed in alarm.
Then a terrifying sight was before her.
An evil ghost, covered in blood, was howling in the room. The black dog blood revealed its true form, showing its ferocious and hideous nature.
Shen Yuerong screamed and leaped out of bed, clinging onto Long Xiaoshan's back.
Although the evil ghost had been drenched in black dog blood, it did not dissipate; instead, it became even more ferocious and lunged at Long Xiaoshan.
Long Xiaoshan quickly threw a rooster at it.
The rooster, as soon as it was thrown, spread its wings wide and crowed loudly at the evil ghost, its neck feathers standing on end like a fighting cock.
The evil ghost paused upon seeing the rooster but lunged at it again. The rooster jumped up, and after a burst of intense shrieking, it fell to the ground, its body turning black and stiff.
Long Xiaoshan's eyes narrowed.
It was indeed not an ordinary evil ghost, so fierce.
Even after being doused in black dog blood and facing a rooster, the ghost could not be killed; instead, its ferocity was further incited, revealing an even more malevolent expression as it pounced in front of Long Xiaoshan.
But Long Xiaoshan was no ordinary man.
In prison, he had been very ruthless.
Seeing how vicious the ghost was, he too grew angry.
"Looking for death, are you?" He took out his Peach Wood Sword and slashed it fiercely.
Instinctively, the True Qi from within his Dantian surged forth, flowing into the Peach Wood Sword. Suddenly, the sword flashed white, and as it cleaved downward, the fierce ghost was sliced into two halves with a squelch.
It transformed into two masses of black air, writhing and screaming, as if trying to merge back together.
Long Xiaoshan saw the special effect of the Peach Wood Sword and was invigorated, striking again with the sword. However, this time, the effect was not as powerful.
Long Xiaoshan pondered for a moment; there seemed to have been a flash of white light as he struck earlier.
And he had utilized True Qi.
Was it the effect of True Qi?
Long Xiaoshan hurriedly channeled the True Qi again and struck with the sword once more.
As expected, white light flashed, and the evil ghost let out a dreadful scream, once again cut apart.
Now Long Xiaoshan understood. With the True Qi channeled, several more strikes turned the fierce ghost into many wisps of black air.
"Spare me, Immortal, spare my life!"
At that moment, a small wisp of black air took the form of the evil ghost's head, begging and kowtowing for mercy.
And this head, unlike the ferocious one from before, bore the green face of a man.
Long Xiaoshan initially wanted to obliterate it, but then with a stern voice he said, "You, a ghostly spirit, instead of seeking reincarnation, came here to harm people, and yet you ask me for mercy?"
The evil ghost hurriedly replied, "Immortal, I was forced; I was confined in this Soul-Nourishing Wood with symbols that punished me. If I did not harm people, I would suffer torture day and night."
"Is this Soul-Nourishing Wood the thing you're talking about?" Long Xiaoshan picked up the paperweight from the desk.
"Yes, yes," replied the evil ghost repeatedly.
"Sister Shen, who gave this to you?"
Although Shen Yuerong was frightened and hiding behind Long Xiaoshan, seeing the evil ghost begging for mercy under Long Xiaoshan's might, her fear abated somewhat. Hearing their conversation, she, being so intelligent, came to understand and said with an ugly expression, "It was given to me by Zhang Facai, the richest man in the village. When I inspected his mine last time, he gave it to me. I thought it was just an ordinary paperweight, nothing valuable, so I accepted it."
