Chapter 5: I Do
When she saw the silver-haired young girl, the Goddess of Life's eyes lit up. With her vision as a God King, she could see that the moment this young girl arrived in this universe, the surrounding laws of life became active. Even the Ancient Tree of Life began to sway, exuding joy.
"This is... the true essence of life. This child comprehends the meaning of life itself. Remarkable!"
She studied the girl closely, her divine senses detecting something extraordinary.
"And this child's bloodline... It's even stronger than her. Such a powerful lineage! Such a strong, unknown deity. Even the Dragon God might pale in comparison!"
The Goddess of Life found countless surprises radiating from the silver-haired young girl.
Yet, there was something that puzzled her. From within the girl's body emanated another power, one akin to the God of Destruction. Its intensity was not inferior to the life bloodline she carried.
Life and destruction, existing simultaneously in one child—this astonished the Goddess of Life. Through the girl, she saw the coexistence of destruction and creation, as well as the potential to birth new life.
She was reminded of her relationship with the God of Destruction. Though they were husband and wife, the inherent conflict between their domains—life and destruction—had prevented them from ever having children. It was their shared regret. But now, the silver-haired girl's appearance ignited a spark of hope. Was this the fortune brought by the Life Prayer Ceremony?
If her observations were correct, the arrival of this child could signify a new chapter for herself and the God of Destruction.
Her gaze shifted to another presence—a soul. It belonged to an ordinary person, yet it defied logic by maintaining its form outside its body. Typically, a spirit would dissipate the moment it left its vessel.
She speculated that it was the remnants of starlight that protected the soul. However, that light was almost completely depleted, leaving the spirit on the brink of collapse.
At that moment, Liuxing's body began to dissolve into motes of light. Tears streamed down Firefly's face as she stood frozen, unsure of what to do. She had no way to stop it, no means to preserve Liuxing.
Liuxing, seeing his increasingly translucent form, spoke with a relaxed tone:
"It seems my name wasn't a mistake after all—It's quite fitting, don't you think?"
(His name meaning is Meteor or Star)
He smiled faintly. "But, Firefly, I might have to break my promise. From here on, you'll have to walk this path alone. My journey has reached its end. I can't go with you any further."
Though he tried to remain calm, regret tinged his voice. He had finally met Firefly, the one he affectionately called his "two dimensional wife" in his previous life. He had looked forward to exploring more of this strange and wonderful world with her. But he was, after all, a man long dead—a mere soul.
Now, it seemed, his time had truly run out.
Liuxing chuckled bitterly to himself. "I've accepted it. The only thing that bothers me is the impact I've had on Firefly. She inherited my memories and my fate. I only hope she'll find a way to heal her loss of entropy."
He reached out with his right hand, wanting to wipe away her tears. But his hand passed through her face, leaving him frustrated. In the end, all he wanted was to touch her, just once.
"Please… don't go!" Firefly sobbed, her voice trembling.
Liuxing's heart ached at her words. Her grief brought back memories of the battlefield, where she had been the sole survivor amidst the bodies of comrades and enemies alike. The loneliness she had felt then flooded her once more.
Liuxing forced a reassuring smile. "Don't cry. Death isn't the end of life—it's just a change of place. You have to keep living, Firefly. Maybe someday, in some other time and place, we'll meet again. And when that day comes, you'd better greet me with a smile!"
As the last remnants of starlight faded, Liuxing looked up, his expression thoughtful.
"Even though I don't know if you have a consciousness, thank you—whoever or whatever you are. You allowed me, someone who should have died long ago, to experience this incredible journey and meet Firefly. But now, it's time for me to leave. Goodbye."
Liuxing closed his eyes, unable to bear the sight of Firefly's tear-streaked face any longer. Inwardly, he sighed.
"In the end, all I'm left with is regret."
He muttered bitterly, "Damn Aha. This is all your fault. If not for you, I might have had more time with her!"
As his form dissolved, the Goddess of Life, watching from afar, whispered softly:
"Poor child…"
An extremely gentle voice sounded at this moment. Firefly raised her head suddenly, instinctively taking out a firefly-shaped wing sheath transformer with her right hand as she looked around vigilantly.
"Child, do you want to save him?"
The gentle voice echoed again, and Firefly's body trembled. Although she couldn't discern whether the speaker was a friend or foe, she had no other choice now. Helpless about Liuxing's situation, she could only grasp this last straw.
Firefly nodded without hesitation. "I want to save him, no matter the cost."
"You and he don't belong to this world. This world bears no mark of your existence. If he dies, his soul will scatter, leaving no chance for reincarnation. Although I can help him reshape his body, his soul doesn't align with this world. Reshaping his body would be futile."
The gentle voice sighed.
Firefly frowned, her gaze sharp as she tightly gripped the wing sheath transformer in her hand. "Are you playing tricks on me?"
"Don't worry, child. I still have a way to save him."
The gentle voice remained calm, as gentle as ever, unaffected by Firefly's hostility.
Hope ignited in Firefly's eyes. Her tone softened significantly, even carrying a trace of pleading. "Please, tell me."
The gentle voice replied, "He has no body, so he has no anchor in this world. But you do. Are you willing to accept my inheritance, connect yourself to this world, and share your life with him?"
Liuxing frowned, shaking his head. "There's no need. I may not fully understand what it means to accept your inheritance, but I just want to leave quietly. I don't want to burden anyone,"
Although the owner of the voice might have good intentions, the idea of sharing a life was not friendly to Firefly in Liuxing's eyes. Liuxing would never do anything to harm Firefly. While he had a desire to survive, simply being able to see the paper-wife he longed for and experiencing this fantastical journey was enough for him.
"I do!"
Ignoring Liuxing's feelings, Firefly cut him off firmly.
It was just sharing her life—nothing more. She had no reason to hesitate. To her, life was important, but so was Liuxing.
Although they hadn't been together for long, exchanging memories had made them feel as if they had known each other for a lifetime.
Liuxing couldn't help but call out, "Firefly..."
"Shut up!"
Firefly shot Liuxing a glare, silencing him. She glanced around, searching for the owner of the gentle voice. Failing to spot them, she raised her voice and asked, "What should I do?"
