Chapter 34: Chapter 32 - Reactions & Schemes
Somewhere, in a room filled with screens.
Several figures were silently looking at various images that quickly passed by. The number of screens was almost excessive, mostly covering the whole wall.
Although the screens showed several scenes, more than half of them kept repeating the same clips.
A gray-haired barbarian striking with red light.
A scared young man weaving an enormous and eerie illusion.
A handsome young man smiling while being electrocuted.
A tanned, white-haired amazon growing wings of blood and firing several blood constructs.
A pink-haired saintess performing a complex purifying ritual in seconds.
A red-haired noble lady, somehow, fusing two elements.
A supposedly untalented young woman, as described by her guardians, wielding aura, mana, and divine power in tandem, completely ignoring every single rule the people watching had been taught and had been teaching.
And a young man with black hair and red eyes, slightly above average in mana pool and below average when it came to aura, and yet he was faster and stronger than most of the participants.
His control over mana and his affinities was completely off the charts. And none of the teachers that were in that room wanted to bring to the table his battle instincts and ruthlessness.
Constantly going for the vitals or to cause wounds that caused large amounts of pain.
This participant was a violent variable that none of the teachers or the staff of the academy were prepared to appear in the entrance exams.
Finally someone spoke.
"Who is he?"
The man who spoke had a broad stature, imposing a sense of power. He had gray hair and a beard, brought on by old age. Still, as someone could deduce by the powering muscles that his clothes seemed to fight to contain, he was not a frail old man.
He was the Headmaster of the Uclaria Academy, Ex-General and previous Captain of the Royal Guard, Alden Doux.
"We checked his id, sir. His name is Ray, no surname, he suddenly appeared in the database of the government with the highest level of citizenship allowed for the common populace."
"So he was either forcibly added or someone of high status demanded him to be added. Regardless, this means that he isn't a nobody."
Alden had seen what the boy had done during the entrance exams. Besides the obvious feats of being capable of wielding mana and aura with great control, allowing him to have greater strength than normal.
But that wasn't the start of it. His affinities and his relation with them were outstanding. Fire magic that he wasn't even capable of comprehending, gravity magic wielded with such expertise instead of simply making things heavy and light and that Dominion Magic, capable of making weak minded creatures to completely lose control of themselves and order the world around him to do as he pleases.
Part the waters, raise the ground beneath his feet, making blood float on its own.
And even worse, his knowledge. In his battle against Mara at the end of the Practical Test he showcased incredible insight about the history of the world and how elements themselves came to be, about the concepts that made them, and how to manipulate them.
From the twenty-something staff members and professors in this room, he could confidently say that before they watched the footage, he was the only one aware of such knowledge, and not to such detail.
But now, there was someone with it and with the luxury of simply imparting it for the sake of a better fight.
"Anything else?"
"An investigation was already started even before the exams, but it was futile. The team was stopped and brainwashed to deliver the news to their employers."
"News?"
"Rather a message, sir. Apparently, the one who obstructed their path was none other than a dark crow made out of ink with three eyes. Supposedly, he said, "Do not mess with the Project, go back or die. 2/8/653", word for word."
Alden's eyes widened. He couldn't understand the start of the message, but the end he could understand easily.
Alden was old, very, very old. This year he would be 189 years old. And he remembered that day clearly.
He was thirty at the time. He had been sent to stop a rebellious group that had formed their own independent country in the middle of the Barbarian Tribes' territory, where they had found the burial place for the First Hero.
They were intending to steal everything in his tomb and make it a touristical place for their new nation.
But he was late, when he arrived, they had already done so, at the cost of their lives.
As soon as they stepped into the area of the tomb with the intention of raiding the place, someone had completely destroyed them and their "nation".
He knew nothing of the culprit except that they left a familiar watching over him for every second he stayed in the place and even attacked him if he approached the burial place even a little.
A crow made out of ink.
Alden looked at the red-eyed youth on the screen.
'Are you truly related to the one who caused that massacre, Ray.'
"I see, it's enough, I already understand what needs to be done."
He turned towards the teachers that were still surprised by Ray's performance.
"Teachers! Evaluate him as if he were a normal student, and do not approach him with the intention of digging for his secrets. If I find out that one of you tried to do it, you will face several consequences."
No one complained, this man had been the headmaster for almost a century. Their own teachers and their teachers' teachers were his students, that brought him respect from them.
"Good, now start working. We have several gems this year, and they need to be properly evaluated."
**********
In a dark place...
Two silhouettes could barely be seen, disguised by the surrounding shadows. A single source of light came from the nearby window, seemingly separating the two figures from each other, each one on a side of the room.
One of them was clearly a woman, who was kneeling down, her head laid low in reverence, her long hair hiding the expression of her face.
The other figure was one of a sitting man. His legs were crossed as he stared into the screen of a tablet. Weirdly enough, the light of the screen did not reveal any of his features, the one in front of him was not worthy of seeing his face, after all.
Although, she might in the future. Her value just kept increasing ever since she joined his ... "cause". Especially now.
She had just given him some of the information that she had stolen and covered from the entrance exams of the Uclaria Academy. Information about a certain student.
A student capable of wielding demonic power and great knowledge that not even the greatest minds had. She had removed the fact that he wielded demonic power from the reports of the virtual world and gave them to him as proof.
"He might be connected to Rex Draco's disappearance."
The woman raised her head in surprise.
"You think so, my Lord? Why?"
"According to my sources, the investigation led by the royal guards and the church resulted in a single conclusion. Someone from outside took Rex Draco from the place where he had been sealed. And now appears someone capable of wielding demonic power and great knowledge, I don't think it is a coincidence."
"You think that this boy, Ray, is Rex Draco, my Lord?"
"What? Of course not, imagine if that were true! Please, remember the reason why we wanted his sealed body: it was to figure out how he became a demonic dragon so he could use a similar method to turn ourselves into demon-human hybrids."
It was an unquestionable fact in history, Rex Draco was a Demonic Dragon, the only one of its kind. There were several dragons who could wield demonic power, but none of them were capable of generating it naturally like Rex Draco, it was like he was a hybrid between a Dragon and a Demon while maintaining his dragon bloodline's supremacy.
Some believed that he had once been a normal dragon and, when young, stumbled into the method to turn himself into a demon version of a dragon.
Others believed that he had been born that way. The man thought that these people were naive. Their only argument was that in every single documented appearance of Rex Draco, he had always been referred to as a Demonic Dragon. Of course he was. His actions, even for an Evil Dragon that wielded demonic power, were considered disgunstingly horrific, they could only be matched by a demon.
"You think that boy, Ray, may be a successful experiment caused by a third party's involvement with Rex Draco's sealed body?"
"Most likely. His body reports show several non-human components that normal people wouldn't notice, if our theory is correct, they might be draconic characteristics. Amazing, how did you even convince the headmaster to include a program that would form reports about the students bodies and abilities?"
"A few years of years of building trust. A few months of preparation. A few weeks of hints and a few days of hard work to win a bet."
"A bet? This Empire might actually fall because they made a bet with the wrong person! How ironic!!"
If someone could see his face, they would find a wide grin of pure ecstasy.
"I reckon you already have a plan to move forward, my Lord?"
"Sigh, yes. This is the first step towards the completion of our cause."
