Chapter 14: Chapter 13: The Choice
It's late into the night when the truth finally hits me, a harsh slap across my face. The Revenants are not the true enemy. They were never the ones who posed the real threat. The true battle is against the darkness inside me—the stone that's slowly replacing my heart, that's slowly turning me into something I fear.
I can feel it now, the pull of the inevitable. I'm running out of time.
I've come to realize something horrifying: I can't save the world. I can't stop the Revenants. Not without losing myself in the process.
But I can save Kael.
It's a terrible truth, but it's the only truth I can cling to now. I'm the key to the Revenants' immortality, yes. But I'm also the key to ending everything, to ending this war once and for all. And the cost, the price I must pay, is the last piece of my humanity.
I turn to Kael, my heart heavy with the weight of what I must do. He's been my rock through all of this, but even his love can't stop the inevitable. I need to save him from me.
"Kael…" My voice is a whisper, barely audible. "I need you to promise me something."
He looks at me, his eyes filled with concern. "What is it?"
I take a deep breath. "Promise me that you'll let me go. Promise me that when the time comes, you won't try to stop me. Promise me you'll let me do what I have to do."
His face pales, his hand trembling as it reaches for mine. "Lyra, no. I won't let you—"
"Promise me, Kael." I squeeze his hand, trying to steel myself for the pain that's about to come. "If we don't stop the Revenants now, it will be too late. I won't be able to fight it anymore."
Tears well in his eyes, and for a moment, I see the truth—the pain he's hiding. "I promise," he whispers, his voice breaking. "But I can't lose you, Lyra. I can't."
