Chapter 15: (VIA) Chapter 15: Good Heavens, Ines and W are Fighting Over a Man?!
Viego had thought W would come looking for him to demand an explanation for why he had run off with Ines. But he hadn't expected this moment to come so quickly.
On the evening of the second day after he had set off with Ines, W found him.
Viego was with Ines, still at a separate campfire outside the main camp. The two of them were just sitting by the fire. Since Ines had "praised" him the night before, Viego had been unwilling to speak to her again. Ines could sense that Viego had, for some strange reason, become more wary and... distant towards her? She didn't know why, but this could be considered a good thing—at least she wouldn't be bothered by Viego's questions anymore.
Not long after the campfire was lit, the white-haired Sarkaz female mercenary came looking for them. She stood behind Viego, draping an arm over his shoulder as if to embrace him intimately—if one were to ignore the dagger pressed against his neck.
W smiled like a blooming flower. "Viego, it seems following Ines has made you very happy, hmm?"
Ines, on the other side, stared at the campfire, as if she hadn't seen the two of them at all.
"…I haven't even said a word," Viego sighed helplessly. "W, you know I had no choice. They don't trust me, and that includes you, doesn't it…"
"Spare me the excuses to brush me off." W interrupted Viego, her voice thick with a smile, but Viego could feel that she was still angry. "Go on, Viego. Have you thought of how you want to die?"
"Uh…" Viego looked up. "W, can you let me die of old age? Or suffocate in your…"
W's action of pinching his jaw cut off Viego's words. She leaned close to his ear and gritted her teeth in a low voice, "If you dare to say anything perverted, I'll cut your tongue out right now…!"
Viego raised an eyebrow. I wasn't going to say anything perverted. Weren't you the one who told me to choose a way to die?
"Let him go, W." Ines's cold voice rang out. "Watching you two play around is just a waste of time. I have a question for you. After I ask it, you can take Viego and do whatever you want with him, as long as you don't stay here and disturb me."
"Are you ordering me?" W looked up, her smiling face full of passive-aggression. "Captain Ines, what great authority you have. Oh my, I'm so scared. When you took my person away, did you ever think that you yourself would be disturbed?"
"Your person?" Ines's golden eyes glanced over coldly. "W, you are also a member of this mercenary group. Heavily assigned Viego to my team, so he is my person now."
Viego: "???" Hey, why is no one asking my opinion? Why did you suddenly start fighting over me? I don't belong to anyone!
I'm angry, I'm trembling, I'm cold, I'm crying! When will Viego ever become an independent individual, instead of living as an accessory to you women!
But Viego also knew that neither W nor Ines actually cared that much about him as a person. He was just an unfortunate trigger that had been dragged into a war between two confrontational women. It would have been the same with anyone else…
"Oh? Then when Heavily came looking for me, why did he say 'Ines thinks it's more appropriate for Viego to join her team'?" W said mockingly. "Could it be that Captain Ines didn't think so? That's really strange, why would Heavily tell me that?"
"So you taking him with you every day, even sleeping by the same campfire, was a sign that Captain Ines didn't want Viego to join?"
Viego thought W had a real knack for being passive-aggressive. It should be very effective against a cold, three-noes type like Ines.
Sure enough, Ines frowned. "W, you're being unreasonable. You know very well why I did that."
"I know? How would I know Captain Ines's grand opinion? I'm just an uncultured brute, I don't understand so many principles." W sneered. "You steal my person and run off, and now you're saying I'm being unreasonable? I really didn't expect Captain Ines to be so dedicated to a 'Sarkaz' mercenary group."
W deliberately put heavy emphasis on the word "Sarkaz."
Ines took a deep breath, suppressing her frustration. "…Heavily never asks about his team members' pasts, but I'm different. Viego, he…"
"You really are different from us," W interrupted her.
"..." Ines rose from the side of the campfire, staring deeply at W. "Are you trying to start a fight?"
"Am I? How would I know?" W's face was full of innocence, her eyes fixed on Ines, the smile on her face growing ever brighter. "I'm just telling the truth, aren't I?"
CLANG—!
Sparks suddenly flew in the air. Ines had already appeared in front of W, holding the spiral dagger in a reverse grip, which was blocked by the dagger in W's hand.
Viego sat between the two of them, the sharp points of the dagger and the short-sword right above his head. If either W or Ines were to slip, their weapons would pierce through Viego's skull.
Viego blinked. The fight between Ines and W had started too suddenly, leaving him a little unable to react.
Now, in front of him was Ines, wearing over-the-knee boots that revealed her plump, fair thighs. Behind him was W, wearing black stockings that felt smooth and silky to the touch.
How am I supposed to choose?
Are you testing a newcomer with this kind of thing???
"Let me teach you something. If you want to live longer, don't over-rely on one part of your strength," Ines's brows were furrowed, her voice cold. "And don't provoke an enemy you have no intel on. Every Sarkaz mercenary carries a knife."
Viego, looking up at the two from below, sighed that this woman Ines was indeed fierce... fierce in every sense of the word.
"Oh? That's a bit surprising, isn't it?" W's lips curled upwards, forming an excited arc. "Whether it's your sword-shaped staff, or you calling yourself a… 'Sarkaz mercenary'?"
Ines's brows furrowed even lower, and she let out a displeased "tsk." Viego could hear her putting force into her stance, making her weapon grate against W's dagger. It sounded like she had hit a sore spot.
Could it be that Ines isn't a Sarkaz?
Viego raised an eyebrow, thinking that this crazy woman W actually had a certain charm when she smiled. But then again, the prerequisite was that she shouldn't have a dagger pressed against his neck... Hmm, she looks less fierce than Ines. Is it because she's wearing a heavy tactical vest?
Viego pinched his chin.
W's gaze flickered downwards, just in time to meet Viego's contemplative look. Ines's gaze followed hers downwards, and she too saw the pondering Viego.
The two looked at each other, and with an unspoken agreement, they released their force and retracted their weapons, thus ending the conflict.
"Heh." W sneered. "F*cking perverted man."
"Hmph…" Ines snorted coldly. "Viego, your eyes don't seem to be very well-behaved. I can help you gouge them out."
Viego: "???" What's going on, why are they suddenly all aiming their spears at me? I was just watching the show, what did I do?
