Viego in Arknights

Chapter 19: (VIA) Chapter 19: Enemy Attack!!

On the morning of the second day, the teams of Heavily, W, and Ines set off on their respective journeys.

Viego was still in Ines's team, right behind her.

—This actually made him look like Ines's "adjutant."

The rumbling sound of machinery echoed from the distance. At the end of the wilderness's horizon were several moving black dots—that was Heavily's team. The mercenary company's formation was dispersed, separated by several kilometers, forming a very narrow inverted triangle on the map. Ines and W were the two points at the top, close to each other, while Heavily was the central point at the bottom, the furthest away. The employer was surrounded in the very center of the three teams. Of course, there would be other teams guarding the employer, but Heavily's mercenary company was the outermost team, and also the first to make contact with the enemy.

"Stay alert, Viego." A cold female voice came from ahead. "Don't look around. An attack could happen at any moment."

"I'm just a little puzzled." Viego recalled the mercenary team that had set off on the march in silence and said in a low voice, "Are all the mercenaries here like this?"

Heavily had repeatedly emphasized the danger of this operation, even estimating that the casualties of the mercenary company would exceed sixty percent after the operation was over—he had informed every single person in the company of this before they set out. But no mercenary chose to quit. Those Sarkaz, they just silently assembled their teams and, according to the planned formation, embarked on their journey. There wasn't even a single word of dissent.

Viego found it hard to understand this kind of… highly unified spiritual temperament.

"Not fighting is also death, and an even more miserable one at that." Ines's tone was flat. She glanced at Viego. "Kazdel—no, this entire land has always been like this. After this is over, perhaps you will understand."

If, you can still survive.

The next moment, Ines suddenly looked up, a faint light flickering in her golden pupils. "There's an enemy team approaching from the west, large in number. Casters, form up, prepare to defend against the enemy Caster squad's attack. Disperse the formation. Messenger, notify W's team to get ready."

A response came from the team behind them, and the mercenaries quickly dispersed.

Ines glanced at Viego beside her. "I hope you can survive, Viego… although it would be best if you died."

"You really have a contradictory way of speaking," Viego laughed. "Then I wish you can survive as well, Captain Ines."

"Hmph…"

Ines grunted with an unclear meaning, looking to the west. Over there was a dense jungle. Ines could already see shadowy figures emerging from it, heading towards their team. The two sides were no more than a few hundred meters apart.

A whistling sound came as giant fireballs appeared in the sky, crashing down towards the team, only to be neutralized by their own Casters' Originium Arts. Cannonball-like explosives were launched from the forest, crashing around the team, creating explosions and clouds of dust. The deafening roar was incessant.

The team had already dispersed, forming into individual combat formations. From Ines's previous command, it was clear that she had done this intentionally.

—Was it to prevent the enemy's explosives and high-powered spells from causing too much damage?

The fireballs turned into falling sparks. The enemy's vanguard team had already arrived. Viego took a deep breath and drew the longsword from his back.

"Stay with me." Ines glanced at him. "You're a newcomer. You don't need to coordinate with the team's actions. Pay attention to my position, follow me, but don't get too close."

"Alright." Viego nodded, feeling the Ruination within his body gradually becoming active. It was like a heart beating faster, or the adrenaline rush from the battlefield before him. It seemed to be excited for the impending slaughter and growth.

Memories from the Ruined King flooded his mind, allowing Viego, who was facing such a large-scale battlefield for the first time, to feel no panic at all.

Viego laughed. "Am I the bait?"

Ines was satisfied with Viego's performance. It seemed he hadn't exaggerated his combat experience, at least. Her body was gradually enveloped in a thin layer of shadow, making her almost inconspicuous under the dim yellow sky. Her figure disappeared on the battlefield.

A cold voice sounded in his ear. "If you're willing to describe your own existence so unpleasantly—then, yes."

"Don't worry, I don't mind." The Ruination's connection to the fragment inside Ines allowed Viego to track her presence. He looked at the three-man team rushing towards him, gripped his sword, and met them head-on.

Three Sarkaz dressed as mercenaries. One crossbowman was at the back, with two sword-wielding warriors in front.

Viego caught the crossbowman's raising motion in advance and reacted preemptively. The crossbow bolt whizzed past him and plunged deep into the ground.

Viego met the two warriors, his longsword covered in a thin layer of black mist that was hard to see with the naked eye. He sidestepped to avoid the slash from the warrior on the left. The warrior on the right swung his longsword at his waist.

Viego paid it no mind, raising his sword to strike, trading injury for injury!

The enemy's longsword slashed across his waist, but no blood flew out. Viego's longsword pierced through his neck, and a shower of crimson blood erupted.

The two warriors' eyes widened. The one on the right had already fallen. The one on the left reacted quickly, raising his sword to chop off Viego's head in the gap while he was pulling his sword out!

"Haha!" Viego grinned, directly letting go of the longsword stuck in the enemy's neck. The Black Mist in his hand solidified, forming into a sharp, long needle, piercing into the body of the enemy on the left before the longsword could land on his own neck.

The Sarkaz's face turned ashen in the blink of an eye, and he fell backward without a sound. The longsword that fell from his hand was caught by Viego. The狰狞刀伤 on his waist had already vanished without a trace.

As long as a breath of the Ruination remained, Viego would never die.

The white-haired man looked up and saw Ines, who had already taken care of the crossbowman in the rear. Ines glanced at him, and her body melted into the shadows. Her heart grew even more vigilant towards Viego. She had seen everything that had just happened between him and the two mercenaries. Viego was injured, yet showed no sign of pain. That sword had already cut through his body; it couldn't have been just a shallow scratch, yet not a single drop of blood had been shed.

This man… was hiding a great secret.

With her preconceived notions, Ines became even more certain that Viego was related to those insane experiments of the Leithanian Casters. She had heard before that many insane, paranoid Leithanian Casters would directly use their own bodies for experiments.

Viego… was perhaps one of them.

BOOM—!!

An explosion occurred in the enemy's ranks. Viego looked to the east—that was the direction of W's team.

"W is providing support."

"Mm," Ines's voice sounded by his ear. "Go back and find her. It's time to rally the team and launch a counter-attack."
