Chapter 21: (VIA) Chapter 21: Harrowed Path!
On the battlefield, amidst flying artillery fire, Viego stood alone, facing four of the enemy's elite squads.
Four squads, a total of twenty men.
Twelve warriors armed with longswords, each clad in thick, charcoal-gray tactical armor. Among them was one who seemed to be the leader, over two meters tall, wielding a broadsword taller than Viego himself. Six crossbowmen in cloaks, their hands holding heavy, wide crossbows, all loaded and ready to fire, their arrowheads glinting coldly. There were also two who were empty-handed, vaguely surrounded in the center. They gave Viego the strongest sense of threat; they were likely the enemy force's Casters.
The enemy's formation was tight, without any gaps. Their steps were unified, their coordination certainly extremely tacit. They could not be defeated one by one.
He himself was heavily injured, the Ruination within him nearly depleted, and the Black Mist unusable.
The white-haired man's gaze was heavy. He raised his sword, took a step, and charged straight ahead!
Now in a desperate situation, Viego had no other choice but to break through head-on, to find life in the midst of death! As long as he could kill one person first to strengthen the Ruination... then he would surely be able to slay all the remaining enemies!
The enemy had probably been watching him all along, but their knowledge of his abilities was certainly superficial. They might know that Viego's fighting style was to trade injury for injury, know that his body's healing ability was excellent, and guess that he could replenish his "stamina" through killing.
But they would absolutely never guess that this body of Viego's, transformed by the Ruination, had none of the "fatal weaknesses" that an ordinary person would have. Even if his head was chopped off, even if his heart was pierced, even if his body was split open, as long as a single breath of the Ruination remained, Viego would simply not die.
This was his greatest trump card!
The enemies met Viego in silence. The crossbowmen moved first. Several heavy crossbow bolts cut through the air, narrowly grazing Viego's body as he dodged. At the same time, the thick, long broadsword also came cleaving down! Behind the enemy, a dark magic projectile凝聚 in the Caster's hand!
Is this the coordination of an elite team? Truly seamless, but...
"Useless!"
Viego gritted his teeth, the corners of his lips curling into a ferocious smile. He let the man-sized broadsword cleave down upon his body, while thrusting the longsword in his hand into the thigh of a mercenary who was also swinging a sword at him!
In the previous battles, Viego had already discovered it. The Sarkaz mercenaries in this battle all loved to trade injury for injury. Most of them didn't care much about their own wounds. They were numb and calm in the face of death, even indifferent to their own demise—as long as their death could achieve their goal. They didn't seem like mercenaries, more like an army.
Such a team was terrifying. But this "terror" was, on the contrary, exactly what Viego wanted!
The Black Mist poured into the body of the mercenary whose thigh Viego had stabbed, reaping his life in an instant. The Ruination grew a little stronger. The mercenary's face turned ashen.
Viego's arm was severed at the root by the descending broadsword! But the severed arm did not fall. It was connected by a faint black mist, which reattached it to Viego's body. Other than the just-recovered power of the Ruination being consumed, Viego was, by all accounts, unharmed!
The mercenary captain reacted quickly, almost drawing his sword back to strike again. But his movements required re-lifting his hand and gathering strength. For a weapon that could be called a heavy weapon, it was too slow!
The longsword, covered in a thin black mist, spun, leaving a quickly dissipating black afterimage in the air, instantly slashing across the necks of two mercenaries!
—A horizontal slash!
Cold blood splattered. The Ruination grew stronger for the third time, a slightly excited, restless feeling spreading within his body.
A crossbow bolt shot forth. The ashen-faced mercenary fell stiffly. Four. Viego counted silently in his heart, sensing the state of the curse's power within him.
Kill two more, and it should be enough to pull off the move I have in mind...
A sharp crossbow bolt pierced Viego's body. He laughed it off, swinging his sword heavily onto the arm of a tall Sarkaz warrior. Sparks flew. The thick tactical armor was damaged by the longsword, but it failed to truly injure the enemy. Couldn't break his defense. His defense is really high.
The longsword twirled into a flower pattern, then reverse-stabbed into the body of the mercenary behind him who had just left a wound on him with a swing of his sword. Five.
The broadsword came slashing down again. Viego turned slightly to the side, avoiding being cut in half at the waist, but was still left with a deep,狰狞 gash on his side. The power of the Ruination was not enough to repair this wound, but it did not affect Viego's life.
The Caster hurled a dark magic projectile. Viego raised his sword and cleaved it apart! So it has a physical form...
He glanced at the longsword in his hand, which was also damaged from blocking the spell, and noticed that the tall warrior had once again gritted his teeth and raised his longsword.
Almost there, but it should be just barely enough...
The Black Mist poured out from the hole in his chest, barely managing to envelop Viego's entire body. The longsword came down, but only sent dirt flying, without the feel of cutting into solid flesh at all.
The mercenary captain was shocked and uncertain. It missed… how could it?!
The sound of something cutting through the air came from behind.
"Captain, behind you!" his teammate's warning came too late.
My whole body is covered in heavy armor. That man can't break my defense. Could it be that he panicked and chose a desperate path?
The tall warrior raised the greatsword in his hand, wanting to turn and shatter Viego's body. But the next moment, a sharp pain from his lower back made his movements freeze. He only had time to turn his head back and see the longsword, covered in a thin black mist, passing through his body from his lower back.
The mercenary captain's body visibly turned ashen. He was dead.
The Black Mist, carrying his strong and vigorous life essence, returned, replenishing the Ruination within Viego's body, which was as faint as a flickering candle flame. The life force was so vigorous that even Viego was a little surprised.
Elite mobs really do give more EXP...
Speaking of which, he had to thank Ines for giving him the inspiration to use this move in a real battle. To envelop oneself in the Black Mist, achieving the effect of reducing one's presence and moving quickly, and in the blink of an eye, circling behind the mercenary captain.
In a game, this would be the Ruined King's E skill— Harrowed Path!
Although using this move had brought the power of the Ruination to the brink of exhaustion, the reward from killing the mercenary captain was enough to barely compensate for this expenditure. At the very least, it was enough to support Viego in killing the remaining enemies.
A few moments later, the battle was over. The enemies had departed peacefully.
Viego stepped over the scattered ashen corpses on the ground and headed towards the area where Ines and W had been before, the area that had been bombarded by spells.
"Although the power of the Ruination isn't as full as before, it's barely enough…" The enemy's elite forces shouldn't be numerous, otherwise they wouldn't have resorted to tactics like setting traps and sneak attacks. Ines's perception was sharp, and W's ability to react was not bad. The speed at which that spell fell was not particularly fast. They should have been able to react. It was very likely they hadn't died under that spell.
Viego had to find them.
"No one in this world can stop…"
SLAP—!
Holy sht, how could I say something like that?!*
Viego clapped a hand over his own mouth, his expression somewhat twisted. Damn it, in that last battle, I was influenced by the Ruined King a little too deeply. The side effects are a bit serious.
If I find those two women in a bit, I won't blurt out Isolde's name, will I?
Fck.*
