Viego in Arknights

Chapter 25: (VIA) Chapter 25: Kids Don't Know Any Better, They're Just Joking!

W and Ines moved through a landscape of ruined buildings.

"Hiss…" W gritted her teeth and sucked in a breath, her breathing clearly much heavier. "Are those f*cking idiots behind us part Perro? How can they stick to us so tightly? They're really a pain in the ass…"

The search party from the north had been hot on their heels. Both of them were heavily injured, and with their stamina failing, they couldn't move quickly. They had only managed to evade the enemy's search several times by relying on this ruined cityscape and Ines's perception abilities, which was how they had lasted until now. But by now, W, who had been dragging Ines along the whole way, was clearly on the verge of exhaustion.

"You still have the mood to curse at a time like this?" Ines was not in a good state either. Cold sweat was already seeping from her forehead. She said in a low voice, "Less nonsense. Hide well."

Her eyes lit up with a faint glow, but in the next moment, she closed them as if in sharp pain. "Tsk…" Ines gritted her teeth. W could see the physiological tears welling up in the corners of her eyes from the pain.

"Forget it. Aren't you f*cking afraid of going blind? You haven't stopped since just now. You're in so much pain, yet you still won't take a break."

"Nonsense," Ines retorted. "Pain is pain, but if I don't look, how are we going to find a chance to get around them?"

"I, I surrender… ah—!" The voice of a mercenary, accompanied by the sound of a blade sinking into flesh, reached the ears of W and Ines. W peeked out from the edge of a broken wall.

"In our current state, we can't beat these few people at all. Damn it, these people aren't mercenaries…!"

"Say a few less words, save your strength." Ines looked to the west, forcing herself to endure the sharp pain in her eyes, and once again activated her Originium Arts.

W rummaged through her backpack, pulling out the explosives and grenades she had scavenged from corpses along the way—the kind used for mortars.

"Hey, W, you…!" Ines wanted to stop her, but W had already walked out.

"Sarkaz, all a bunch of lunatics!" she cursed in a rare, low voice, leaning against the wall to support herself as she stood up and followed W out.

W glanced at her with some surprise. "Oh, I thought you wouldn't go crazy with me?" She had heard Ines's curse.

"Of course I won't…!" Ines reached out and grabbed W's shoulder, saying in a low voice, "I told you..."

"Oh? Look what we have here, two big fish…" Ines's words were cut off by the voice of an enemy mercenary up ahead. "Sarkaz mercenaries, W and Ines… both are famous names on the list. Worth quite a few candies, aren't you."

"You're holding those grenades. Are you planning to take us down with you?" The mercenary laughed mockingly, raising the heavy crossbow in his hand. "Want to see which is faster, you rushing over to detonate the grenades, or my crossbow bolt?"

Around the two of them, several other mercenaries who had been searching in the ruins also surrounded them.

"Hey, Ines, let go of me… I never realized you wanted to die with me this much."

Ines was silent, just staring ahead, her golden eyes shining with a faint light.

"Oh, even at this point, you're still not willing to give up the struggle?" The "mercenary" looked at Ines with great interest. He seemed to enjoy this condescending, cat-and-mouse attitude. "I advise you to save your strength. Your casualties have already exceeded eighty percent. No one is coming to rescue you. If the General wasn't interested in you, I would have already killed you here."

"Either way, you're dead even if you resist. Why not try surrendering and working for us?"

"Is that so…" Ines glanced at W beside her, gripping her arm tightly, preventing her from throwing the grenades in her arms.

"It seems you've already made your choice?" The mercenary started to laugh, a hint of contempt in his smile. "Looking at it this way, the famous mercenaries Ines and W aren't so loyal after all, are they?" He deliberately used the word "loyal" to insult both Ines and W.

"Ines…!" The smile on W's face vanished. She looked at Ines. "Are you really going to do this?"

"No," Ines shook her head. "Of course not." The faint light in her eyes finally extinguished. She said, "What I was looking at… actually wasn't you."

"What?" The mercenary was stunned. Sensing something was wrong, he quickly turned around. "Then what were you looking at… ?!"

The moment he turned, what met him was a spreading black mist, and a longsword wrapped in that mist, brought down upon his head!

A mocking voice sounded: "She was looking at your daddy, Viego!"

Pain Pierces the Heavens—Door-Opening Slash Edition!

The mercenary's head was split in two by the longsword. The last emotion remaining on his ashen face was fear and disbelief.

The faint black mist dispersed. Viego's figure disappeared, and in the next moment, appeared phantom-like behind another mercenary. The result was self-evident. Viego, in the same fashion, killed the other mercenaries present in the same way.

Finally, he stood before W and Ines, and just as before the battle began, he raised an eyebrow and smiled. "Seeing me, aren't you surprised? Aren't you unexpected?"

"What a cheap laugh, you f*cking idiot Viego." W's reaction was not unexpected, still the same foul-mouthed self. "But… this time, you were impressive…" Her body swayed.

Plop—

Viego reached out in time to catch her, preventing her from falling to the ground, and also catching the grenades that fell from her arms. —It wasn't that he was particularly worried about W, but mainly that he was afraid the grenades in her arms would fall to the ground and detonate, sending all three of them to heaven. Viego wasn't worried about W at all.

"Hey, W, don't pass out," Viego looked down at her. "You haven't agreed to my reward for saving you yet."

"I haven't… passed out yet…" W's voice was as weak as a mosquito's buzz, but it was still clearly caught by Viego. "You just f*cking want to touch my legs, right? If I don't die, I'll let you touch them as much as you want when we get back, alright…"

"Holy sh*t." Viego was shocked. "No way, you… kids don't know any better, they're just joking. W, don't take it seriously, hey!"

W gave no further response. Viego checked her breathing and confirmed that her life force was still as tenacious as a true American cockroach, and that she had only passed out, before he finally felt relieved.

"Are you done with your chitchat?" Ines looked at Viego, her voice as cold as ever. "If you're done, let's go. There are still enemy reinforcements in the east. They're already on their way."

"You're the captain, you call the shots. But…" Viego raised an eyebrow at her and extended his other hand. "Do you need me to lend you a hand, Captain Ines?"

"Hmph…" Ines grunted noncommittally. Then she reached out and grabbed Viego's arm, leaning against his body. Her injuries were indeed very heavy, making it difficult for her to even stand. This was necessary to evade their pursuers, just like letting W carry her…

"I haven't let my guard down around you, Viego."

"Oh? Haha… alright, alright. But I didn't say Captain Ines trusts me, did I?"

"…Shut up."
