Villain Hiring: Help! Author Wants Me Dead

Chapter 138: The Boss Monster (2)

"I say we set an ambush," I blurted out, surprising even myself.

Vayu tilted his head. "Explain."

"Trap it between Eren and Kane in front," I said quickly, adrenaline making my words tumble out fast.

"Vayu will attack from the sides. I'll stay back and guide everyone if it tries to run or if things get messy while Lina would heal us whenever necessary."

Vayu considered it, tapping his sword hilt.

Then he nodded.

"For once," he said, "you actually sound like a leader."

"I am the leader, jackass," I said sweetly.

"Yeah, yeah," he muttered. "Save the bragging for after we survive."

"One question," Kane said, raising his hand. "If it's the size of a house, and we're the size of squirrels, how exactly are we not getting flattened?"

I thought for a second.

"Don't die," I said seriously.

"Wow," Kane said, slow clapping. "Inspirational.

I'm moved."

Vayu rolled his eyes and pushed him forward. "Move, idiot."

We crept forward, hearts pounding.

Somewhere up ahead, the forest grew way too quiet.

No birds.

No bugs.

Just the soft crunch of leaves under our legs and the faint, distant rumble of something big breathing.

'This was it.' I thought.

The boss.

The gamble.

The one shot we had left to not look like complete failures.

And if we didn't pull this off?

Well...

I hoped Lucas and his team liked stealing points, because they were about to see what it felt like to get their dreams stomped into the dirt.

It was to make Grandpa Venus proud.

Or die trying.

Again.

A/N: And somewhere in the trees ahead, something opened a massive yellow eye.

***

It had almost been an hour since we first found tracks of the boss monster.

Every single footprint seemed almost as big as all of us combined and even the destruction around us had started becoming more visible and unfounded the deeper we walked into the forest.

I was currently sitting atop our tallest members shoulders as I lazily swung my legs.

Well, more like I was supposed to scout the area for more signs of the beast and let the whole group know.

Hufff

I sighed, knowing how useless I was in our current situation and how if only I had also awakened an ability or even been chosen by a god, it would have been so much better.

No one except Noah and Grandpa knows this yet but there was something very weird about everything that was happening with me.

First of all, I did not have a magic core like normal humans, grandpa had said that this could be because I have a unique physique but no matter how much I tried, it refused to awaken until this day.

That was also the reason I would sometimes steal Noah's mana potions to see if they would effect me.

But that was not the scariest part.

No.

The scariest part was that in the whole wide world, I am probably the only human who had not received 'The System' like everyone else.

Yeah.

As impossible as it was to believe…

But I did not have a system.

It was almost like the rules of this world did not work for me.

My black eyes showed weakness for just a moment longer as I gave myself the time to be weak for once.

And when that was over, I clenched my fists tighter than ever and started focusing hard on my surroundings again.

The sun had almost appeared exactly on top of is, making the heart unbearable.

Glancing through the vast trees and branches, in this annoying wave of heat, I almost thought like I saw a massive eye.

Yes, an eye—

Shrugging it off as an illusion because of too much heat, I tried to look away from it when all of a sudden the yellow eye blinked.

Slow.

Heavy.

Like it knew it didn't have to rush for anything.

I almost screamed as all of us froze behind a fat, mossy tree, feeling a strong aura of bloodlust target onto out backs.

Eren shifted his stance slightly, but sitting on the 7 foot man's shoulders I realised that he was actually trembling due to the sheer pressure.

Vayu drew his twin daggers without a sound, as if he had gone through such situations before while Kane just looked like he was about to pee himself.

It was as if an invisible layer of mana in fromt of us had been broken apart as the figure of the beast appeared a few meters ahead of us.

A low, earth-shaking growl rolled through the forest, making the ground vibrate beneath our bodies.

"That's... not small," Lina whispered, her voice drowning in the sheer volume of the beast's shout.

'No shit, Lina.' I thought, unable to understand how we should beat this monstrosity in front of us.

Branches snapped and trees started stretching apart as the monster dragged itself fully into view.

It looked like a nightmare stitched together from every bad dream I'd ever had, massive bear-like body, lines of jagged black spines down its back, and a mouth that stretched way too wide and was filled with way too many teeth.

The system dinged softly in the corner of my eyes.

[Boss Monster: Abyssal Rendbear — Tier 4]

Tier 4?

Mother. Fucker.

I felt Kane shaking next to me like a washing machine on a full spin.

"Remember," I hissed. "Stick to the plan."

Kane nodded so hard I thought his neck might snap off.

The Rendbear sniffed the air, its nostrils flaring.

It was smelling us?

"NOW!" I shouted.

Eren and Kane burst out of cover like missiles.

The ground actually trembled.

Birds shot out of the trees like some fireworks.

The thing stood up fully, and holy crap—It was bigger than we thought.

Patchy fur, scars across its nose, a shoulder twice the size of Kane's entire body, and claws like swords.

Oh, and did I mention the fangs?

Yeah. It had a mouth full of them, each one bigger than my entire forearm.

Eren jumped first, his greatsword flashing in the sunlight like a beacon.

Kane was right behind, screaming some battle cry that sounded suspiciously like:

"FOR PIZZA!"
