Chapter 90: Chapter 90: Pyramid Cleaver
When Erik saw Marcus, he was momentarily stunned. After hearing Marcus's revelation, he stared at Pietro in disbelief.
"You're my son?"
"Uh... yes... that's right," Pietro hesitated. "I just wanted to see you again. Last time, I didn't know about our relationship."
Upon receiving confirmation, Erik seemed shocked to his core. The magnetic field surrounding him instantly dissipated, and the massive magnetic rings floating in the sky lost cohesion, scattering in all directions.
"What... what was your mother's name?" he asked, his voice barely audible.
"Natalia Maximoff."
The familiar name echoed through Erik's mind. A woman he had loved deeply long ago.
Their romance had been passionate, but his obsession with vengeance against Shaw had gradually frightened Natalia until she finally fled from him.
He'd never known she was pregnant at the time, raising their child alone.
"Ahem," Marcus cleared his throat and continued. "One more thing—your wife and daughter are still alive."
At this, Marcus looked slightly uncomfortable while Raven couldn't help but smile.
She could imagine Erik's inner turmoil. The reason he had joined Apocalypse was his belief that his family had been killed. Now that he knew the truth—and the person responsible—his reaction was unpredictable.
Sure enough, after hearing that his wife and daughter still lived, the magnetic field around Erik instantly flared. The scattered metal flew back into the sky, condensing and twisting violently.
"He's right. I met Nina and Magda at Xavier's school," Pietro confirmed, unwittingly intensifying his father's emotional storm.
Erik's power surged even stronger, compressing countless metal objects into a dense, churning sphere above them.
"How did they end up at Charles's academy?" he demanded.
"Well... it's a long story," Marcus explained. "Basically, when I returned here, I saw a little girl about to be struck by an arrow, so I saved her."
He deliberately omitted that he had accidentally rescued them when he stumbled through the time-space turbulence. That would be too embarrassing, requiring explanations about future timeline alterations—far too complicated.
As expected, Erik lost control upon hearing Marcus's explanation. The magnetic field around him fluctuated wildly, the metallic sphere in the sky twisting and contorting within the magnetic vortex.
"I understand you're excited, but could you tone it down a bit?" Marcus suggested.
The surrounding environment vibrated under the turbulent magnetic field. Metal fragments whirled through the air, devastating everything in their path.
"You... you BASTARD!!!"
The enraged Erik lunged at Marcus, swinging his fist toward his face.
"Don't blame me," Marcus responded calmly, catching Erik's fist and instantly severing his connection to the surrounding magnetic field. "I saved your family. If you had stayed just a few seconds longer that day, you would have seen them yourself."
He found it difficult to reconcile this volatile Magneto with the dignified older man he'd known in the future timeline.
One thing remained consistent, however—Erik's combat skills were only marginally better than an average person's.
"Haven't you worked on improving your hand-to-hand combat over the years? You fight exactly as you did twenty years ago."
Though Apocalypse had enhanced Erik's powers, they remained mutant abilities—and like Charles's global telepathic broadcast, they couldn't affect Marcus. He easily severed Erik's connection to the magnetic field.
Feeling his powers suppressed, Erik gradually calmed down.
Though they hadn't seen each other in twenty years, he still remembered Marcus's ability. The power to nullify mutant abilities made any mutant particularly vulnerable when facing him.
"Now then," Marcus turned toward the massive pyramid. "You've built quite an impressive structure here."
He knew the pyramid's purpose—Apocalypse and Charles were inside, the former attempting to transfer his consciousness into the latter's body.
"Your family is waiting for you. How about we save Charles first? If I'm not mistaken, he's dying as we speak."
This snapped Erik back to reality. His family was alive, and he had met his son.
Now the only person in immediate danger was his old friend Charles. Apocalypse had already begun the transfer ceremony—any further delay would ensure Charles's death.
With renewed focus, Erik manipulated the magnetic forces to propel himself skyward. He intended to demolish the pyramid.
"Well," Marcus smiled at Raven and Pietro, "reunion's over. Time to join the battle."
With those words, Marcus transformed into energy and vanished.
He remembered that Apocalypse's pyramid contained a special device that absorbed sunlight, converting it into the energy needed for the soul transfer. Such a device could potentially extract Aya Stars—something he couldn't ignore.
Soaring toward the pyramid, Marcus's body glowed with void energy as he transformed into Excalibur [Holy Sword].
"They should be in the center. Destroying the pyramid shouldn't be a problem!"
Energy gathered and coalesced around his right hand.
Shing!
A light blue energy sword materialized in Marcus's grip. The blade of the Exalted Sword cut through the air with a series of harmonic tones.
"This isn't enough to breach the pyramid," he realized.
The energy output intensified. The Exalted Sword grew larger and larger, extending to over ten meters in length within seconds.
"The energy requirement is substantial..."
Though he didn't need to worry about the armor's energy consumption, each form had its limits. The Exalted Sword's current output approached Excalibur's maximum capacity. Any further increase risked the sword's collapse.
"This should be sufficient," he decided.
Gripping the energy hilt with both hands, Marcus slashed at the pyramid.
The enormous blade cleaved through the air, releasing a blue wave of sword energy dozens of meters long.
This attack instantly drained Excalibur [Holy Sword]'s energy reserves. Even the Exalted Sword itself collapsed during the strike, but the effect was devastating. The sword energy continued to expand in flight, like a giant eagle spreading its wings.
When it struck the pyramid, the energy wave had reached nearly 100 meters in length, effortlessly carving a massive gap through the structure and splitting the pyramid's top in two.
Feeling Excalibur's energy reserves replenishing, Marcus transformed into a streak of light and shot toward the opening he'd created.
The spectacle of the pyramid being cleaved by the sword energy stunned everyone engaged in battle below. They all stared in awe at the massive gap in the once-impenetrable structure and the sword-light racing toward it.
