Chapter 63: Warhammer: Lord of the Endless Monster Horde [63]
Rhodes'smind instantly flashed with an image of a muscular warrior tearing apart a Tyranid Hive Tyrant with his bare hands, punching a Daemon Prince, and kicking an Ork warlord.
No wonder this guy is so powerful!
So it's you—Titus! A truly famous figure!
He became a Space Marine only 100 years ago and had already risen to the rank of Captain of the Ultramarines' Second Company. If it weren't for certain events where his recruits accused him of being corrupted by Chaos, he would have achieved even greater heights within the Ultramarines.
But why is he called Khorne's Chosen?
That's because when this guy fights, he is incredibly brutal—his combat style is essentially Kratos-like, filled with bloody executions. Moreover, the more savage and violent his kills, the more he regenerates—health, armor, and stamina! The more he kills, the stronger he gets.
Of course, this is just a game mechanic, providing players with a way to heal. The spectacular executions are meant to attract players, giving them a visceral experience of the Space Marine's power.
In reality, Titus doesn't have these abilities. During his battles against the Tyranids, he never displayed any signs of regenerating health, armor, or stamina just by slaying enemies.
However, what is true is that he is seemingly immune to Chaos corruption.
Even when exposed to Warp energies potent enough to corrupt multiple Space Marines, he remained completely unaffected, as if Chaos did not influence him. He even defeated a Daemon Prince that was on the verge of ascending.
This was the primary reason why his recruits suspected him of Chaos corruption. In the Warhammer universe, it's all too common for Space Marines to fall to Chaos.
Titus himself doesn't know why he is resistant to Chaos, but as the protagonist of Space Marine 1 and 2, his loyalty to the Imperium and the Emperor is absolute.
Rhodes was also very curious—why is Titus immune to Chaos corruption? Could it be that the Emperor is secretly protecting him?
Regardless, his combat power is undoubtedly at the level of a Chapter Master.
"Lieutenant Titus, how long have you served in the Deathwatch as a Black Shield? I see three service studs on your forehead—have you been serving for 300 years?" Rhodes asked.
"Yes, my lord. Over a hundred years ago, I was accused of Chaos corruption by my recruits. I was taken by the Inquisition and imprisoned for a century. Afterward, I was selected to serve in the Deathwatch as a Black Shield. In another ten years, I will have served for 400 years in total." Titus replied.
During his years of imprisonment, he had still held onto some hope—hopes that Chapter Master Calgar would come to his rescue, that the Ultramarines would prove his innocence, and that they would confirm his unwavering loyalty to the Imperium and the Emperor.
But time eroded everything.
It seemed the Ultramarines had completely abandoned him—there was no word of them ever defending his name. They had let him go, forsaking their former Second Company Captain.
In the end, Titus accepted his fate. He remained in the Deathwatch, slaying Xenos for the Imperium, fighting until the day he would meet his end.
"By the Emperor, you must have experienced many hardships. But I have just used the Emperor's psychic power to bless you—I can confirm beyond any doubt that you have never been corrupted by Chaos. You are clean." Rhodes declared.
Good. From now on, you'll follow me!
At this moment, Rhodes considered recruiting this powerhouse as his bodyguard.
"You flatter me, Lord Rhodes. I never imagined that one day, I would stand before a true Chosen of the Emperor—and that you would also bring with you the great creations of humanity's Golden Age." Titus replied.
"Lieutenant Titus, my status as the Emperor's Chosen must remain secret. My selection is... unique. You are an experienced veteran, so you must understand the current state of the Imperium." Rhodes sighed heavily, showing deep disappointment.
"My lord... are you worried about the Ecclesiarchy? But... how could they dare?" Titus immediately realized what Rhodes was implying, his expression turning furious.
As a Space Marine who had served for 300 years, Titus knew all too well what kind of people made up the Ecclesiarchy. If a true Chosen of the Emperor were to appear, they would only spread the news if they could control him. If they couldn't, they would denounce him as a heretic and have him executed.
Titus had no love for the Ecclesiarchy—especially the Inquisitors. He had been falsely accused of Chaos corruption and imprisoned for a century.
And the worst part? The Inquisitor who imprisoned him simply died under mysterious circumstances, and only then was he released.
A century of confinement—simply over suspicion. No trial, no chance to prove his innocence.
If that was how the Ecclesiarchy operated, then the High Lords of Terra were no better.
Titus clenched his fists in anger. Corrupt. Rotten.
The fact that the Imperium had decayed to the point where a Chosen of the Emperor had to hide his identity—what an utter disgrace!
Even though he hated to admit it, the Imperium was truly falling apart.
Great Emperor... what does Your Chosen signify? What choice must Your Angels of Death make?
"Do not worry. My secret mission will not last much longer—I have received the Emperor's divine prophecy."
"One year from now, at the end of M41.999, a divine son of the Emperor will awaken from ten thousand years of stasis."
"The Primarch of the Ultramarines, the true ruler of Ultramar's Five Hundred Worlds."
"Roboute Guilliman will awaken from his ten-thousand-year slumber, take on the mantle of Regent of the Imperium, and restore order—saving the Imperium from its decay."
Rhodes declared.
"Lord Rhodes! You... you're serious? My gene-father, Roboute Guilliman, will awaken from his ten-thousand-year slumber?"
Titus was stunned, staring at Rhodes in disbelief.
As an Ultramarine and a former Second Company Captain, he had once stood before the stasis field of his Primarch on Macragge, paying his respects.
Roboute Guilliman—the father of all Ultramarines—had been asleep for ten millennia.
"Yes. And I am the key to his awakening. But this resurrection will not be easy."
"The Imperium is about to enter its darkest era—the darkest millennium."
"Will you stand with me, Titus? Will you help me save our Primarch?"
No loyal Space Marine could refuse the chance to save their gene-father.
