Chapter 11: The Marketplace
The marketplace buzzed with life, the hum of conversations blending with the occasional cry of merchants advertising their wares. For most, it was just another day on Earth. But for the Son-Wu family, their "simple outing" was anything but ordinary.
Li-Yan Mei glanced at her husband with a hint of amusement. "So, the bakery didn't collapse when you walked in?"
Son-Wu San scratched his head sheepishly. "Hey, it's not my fault they underestimated the structural integrity of their walls. I was just picking out bread."
The children, Xian Xue and Xian Long, burst into laughter. Xian Long chimed in, "Father, you made the baker kneel just by asking for a discount! How do you expect walls to stay up when they're trembling?"
The father waved a dismissive hand, ignoring the exaggerated giggles of his children. "That's beside the point. We came here to live normally, didn't we?"
However, "normal" wasn't a word that applied to them. Across the city, an invisible ripple of energy from their earlier misadventures still caused headaches for hidden sects and cultivators trying to keep their presence hidden.
---
At a hidden temple deep underground, the Supreme Elder of the Silent Lotus Sect paced nervously. "What do you mean the spiritual grid destabilized?" he barked at his disciples.
The trembling disciple held up a shattered jade talisman. "Elder, the grid shattered when… when the young lord of the Son-Wu family stepped on a loose cobblestone in the plaza. The tremors—it resonated with our entire formation!"
The elder nearly dropped his tea. "A cobblestone? Their son?!" He turned pale. "What would have happened if the daughter had sneezed?"
Another disciple, trying to lighten the mood, suggested, "Maybe the heavens would fall?"
The elder's glare silenced him immediately. "No jokes. Double the protective layers of the formation. And for heaven's sake, send an envoy to apologize to their family! Bring gifts—lots of gifts!"
---
Meanwhile, in the plaza, Xian Xue tugged on her mother's sleeve. "Mama, that uncle over there looks funny."
Li-Yan Mei turned to see a well-dressed young master from a hidden sect, clearly trying to blend in with the mortals. His elegant robe shimmered faintly, betraying the protective artifact hidden within.
Before Li-Yan Mei could respond, Xian Xue had already approached him. "Hey, Uncle, why do your clothes sparkle?"
The young master froze. He hadn't prepared for direct interaction. "Ah, little girl, these are just—um—special fabrics." He forced a polite smile, sweat trickling down his forehead.
Xian Xue tilted her head. "Special? Like, they can stop a sword?"
The young master stiffened further. "Well, yes, you could say that…"
Innocently curious, Xian Xue flicked her finger at the fabric. A harmless action—at least in her mind. The man's protective artifact instantly overloaded and shattered, sending the young master sprawling to the ground.
"Oops." Xian Xue blinked, genuinely puzzled. "I didn't think it was that fragile."
Li-Yan Mei sighed, picking up her daughter and apologizing to the young master, who was frantically bowing and swearing loyalty to the family.
---
Back at the Son-Wu household, the family regrouped to enjoy their evening meal. The children recounted their day with exaggerated gestures, laughing at how mortals reacted to the smallest things.
Son-Wu San took a sip of his tea and leaned back. "You know, for all the chaos, I think today went well."
Li-Yan Mei raised an eyebrow. "You call collapsing a bakery, breaking an underground sect's spiritual grid, and terrifying a young master well?"
"Well," Son-Wu San chuckled, "at least nobody died this time."
The whole family burst into laughter, their voices echoing through the house. Outside, the city trembled slightly, as if the universe itself feared their mirth.
Unbeknownst to the family, emissaries from multiple hidden sects and celestial realms were already on their way, laden with gifts and desperate prayers to appease the family they couldn't hope to challenge.
And so, another "normal" day in the Son-Wu household came to an end, leaving chaos, misunderstandings, and hilarity in its wake.
