Chapter 557: Diving Into The Research Station
The airlock cycled open and space opened up to us.
I took a moment to look at the derelict station in front of me that was surrounded by space debris. Somehow the sight of it giving me a melancholic feeling.
I then realised that I was basically looking at what was akin to a grave site, since there was no doubt that the people that had been on this station died when the station exploded.
And right now… We were basically going in to grave rob.
Hmmm… If this was supposed to make me question my morals, it wasn't since this wouldn't be the first time I was taking stuff from dead people anyway.
Anyway, all those thoughts aside, I should get ready to move.
Since there wasn't a safe place to dock with the station with all the debris floating around, we would have to get out and float there ourselves through the airlock.
Which was why I was currently wearing my Power Armour which doubled as a space suit as well.
On the other hand, Amber was floating beside me without any space suit at all, looking like she was out for a casual stroll.
The only thing she was bringing with her was an oxygen tank which I figured out was to help her create the fire she needed to manipulate them.
Not that she really needed it since she could still use telekinesis to fight anyway.
Then again, we're not expecting there to be any enemies inside that derelict in the first place… Unless ghosts are real and the spirits of those who died are haunting that station…
Hey, at this point, I'd believe anything is possible seeing what I already know about this universe.
After seeing people shooting fireballs and making plants grow with just a thought, ghosts aren't that impossible.
"Ready to go?" I asked, looking at Amber.
She gave me a thumbs up and we jumped out of our ship, letting the momentum carry us towards the derelict.
Even though we tried to park our ship as close to the derelict as possible, there was still a bit of distance between the ship and the derelict so it would normally take quite a while for us to float there.
But since Amber was with me…
She grabbed my hand with her left hand before shooting out a gout of flames from her right, increasing our speed and shooting us towards the station.
The distance melted away in an instant and Amber didn't forget to shoot her flames in front of her to slow us down so we didn't just smash into the station.
We ended up reaching the left half of the station and we slipped into the broken part and into the room that was broken in half.
I had to flip on the lights on my power armour since the entire place was dark and we found ourselves in the remains of what looked like a bedroom.
From the marks on the walls, I could tell this place had been burned before the fire was snuffed out and soot covered the walls with most of the objects a blackened mess floating in the vacuum of space.
This place is truly a wreck…
"So what are we looking for?" Amber asked through our comms, looking around the room.
"Maybe we can start by seeing if they had any records of what they are researching here in the first place? Do we even know that?" I asked.
Mara's voice came through the comms, "Unfortunately not, Captain. This place seems to be a confidential place set up by the UTG so there's no mention of it aside from the disaster."
"That's just plain suspicious… Then I guess we can just start there. We can also check if they have logs of the other Warp Gate as well since they might keep track of who and what goes through the Warp Gate. It might give us a better idea on what is on the other side."
Amber looked around the destroyed room, "I dunno about that, Tera… With how wrecked this place is, I don't even think there's anything left to find."
"Well, as you said, the worst thing that can happen is that we find nothing, right? Might as well just take a look."
I floated to the end of the room, the door having been left open since the protocol of this station must have been to leave the doors open if there was a power failure.
We moved into the dark corridor and I looked around, finding ourselves in a rather spacious corridor that could fit a car easily.
A mix of debris and miscellaneous stuff was left floating around the corridor, all of them untouched for who knows how long.
I saw a sign on the wall and went closer to try and read it but most of it had been burned black.
Still, I could at least make out a few words on it with one at the top saying 'L**ing Qu**t*rs' pointing to the left and 'Ca****n', '*irect***s Off***', 'Secu***y' and '*e*er**o*' pointing to the right.
I could guess the first one was just living quarters since we're already here but the others were a little more tricky.
The second one is probably 'Director's Office' and the third 'Security', but the first and fourth I wasn't so sure.
Still, it seems like everything else was to the right so we might as well just start our search there.
I turned to Amber and pointed towards the right, my lover giving me a nod before we began floating down the corridor.
As we floated along, I suddenly spotted the shadow of a figure up ahead, floating right behind a corner.
I immediately raised my left arm that was fitted with the miniguns, aiming it at the corner.
Amber also saw it and moved to my flank, advancing on the figure together.
But when we got close to it, we relaxed our guard.
That figure we saw was actually just a corpse, which was pretty unnerving on its own but at least it wasn't an enemy trying to ambush us.
Looking at the corpse, it had been burned to a blackened mess and was just left floating at the side of the corridor. It was so badly burned that I can't even tell if this had been a male or a female.
I reached out and poked the corpse with a finger, only to watch as my touch caused its entire upper body to slowly start to disintegrate into flakes and drift away.
"For it to disintegrate like that with a touch… I guess no one has been here for a while," Amber muttered.
I nodded, "Seems like it…"
Right then, something shiny caught my eye amongst the flakes that were floating away from the corpse.
I reached out and grabbed it, pulling it into the light from my power armour to reveal that it was a keycard of sorts.
Despite the fact that this place was definitely burned to a crisp, this keycard still looked pretty serviceable with only some charing along the corners.
"A security access card?" Amber asked.
"Looks like it, though I don't know if we would even need it here."
Amber reached out her hand to me, "I'll hold on to it then, just in case."
I released my grip on the card and she made the card float over to her before she grabbed it and stuffed it in her pocket.
Seeing that we're in a T-Junction, I went up to the sign on the wall again to see which direction we should go.
This time, only the top half was legible but at least we could see that the arrow pointing to the left was going to 'Security' and 'Generator'.
"There might be logs kept in the security room? And maybe we can still restore power to this part of the station?" I suggested.
Amber looked around us and shrugged, "I doubt it but it's worth a look I guess?"
We moved past the disintegrated corpse until we reached a rather imposing metal double door at the end of the corridor that was shut tight.
Beside that door was a smaller metal door but this one seemed to have been forced open with signs of someone using a power tool or something to pull the door apart.
I guess the pirates must have come here before and raided the security room of its weapons but never bothered to try and get into the generator room.
The door was too small for me to fit through so Amber went in to inspect the security room instead.
"Anything?" I asked from outside the door.
"As we thought, all the weapon lockers had been looted clean. But… The place seems relatively undamaged which I guess was because the room was isolated when the explosion happened. The security console still looks like it is in working order so… Maybe if we can supply it with power we might find something?"
My eyes turned back to the large door in front of me.
Ok… That means we need to get past this door then…
Is the generator even still functional?
