Chapter 4: chapter 4: The truth of the house
That night, Eliza could barely sleep. The house had become more oppressive as the hours ticked by. The whispers were louder now—unintelligible at first, but slowly starting to form words.
"Eliza…"
She sat up in bed, heart racing. The whispers had been so quiet at first, but now they seemed to be right outside her door, pressing in from all directions. Her breath caught in her throat as she listened harder.
"Leave…"
The same voice, but this time more urgent. Desperate. She leaped out of bed, heart pounding, and rushed to the door, throwing it open. Nothing.
The hallway was empty, cold, and dark, the faint light from the windows casting eerie shadows. She stepped out into the hallway, straining her ears for any sign of the source. But all she heard was the sound of her own rapid breathing.
"Eliza…"
It came again, closer now. She turned toward the walls, her pulse quickening. The walls seemed to hum with a strange energy, and her mind spun with the realization that whatever had been bound here wasn't done with them. It wanted out.
In that moment, Eliza's eyes fell upon something—something new in the hallway. A message, hastily scratched into the wall, just above the baseboard: *"You shouldn't have come."*
Her blood ran cold. She backed away, her mind reeling. This wasn't some haunting. This was something ancient, something powerful, and it was trying to make sure they never left.
The room grew colder. The house felt alive in a way it hadn't before. Every creak and groan of the old wood seemed amplified, as if the house itself were trying to tell her something.
Eliza grabbed her phone, hands shaking, and dialed Sean's number.
"Sean," she whispered, her voice trembling. "We need to leave. Now."
But when she heard the phone ringing on the other side of the house, a sick feeling settled in her stomach. Sean wasn't picking up.
Before she could react, the whispers came again—louder, urgent, and now unmistakably, *angry*.
"*Leave now.*"

I hope that keeps the tension rising! This is the point where Eliza begins to realize that escaping the house won't be easy—if it's even possible.
