Chapter 7: Chapter 8: Ties That Bind
The elders' revelation leaves Li Wei reeling. Their hands tremble as they grip the amulet, its faint pulse now feeling like a heartbeat in sync with their own. The whispers that had been haunting them since the temple feel louder, almost accusatory.
If their bloodline is the key to the curse, they can't afford to waste time. They decide their next move: uncovering their family's connection to the village. If they can understand what happened generations ago, perhaps they can find a way to stop the curse before it consumes them and the village.
Li Wei looks at Elder Zhang, their voice steady despite the turmoil inside. "Tell me about my bloodline. Who were my ancestors, and what role did they play in this?"
Elder Zhang exhales deeply, his weathered face shadowed with guilt. "Your ancestors were once the guardians of this village, protectors of the temple and its secrets. But greed and fear corrupted them. They betrayed the spirits they had sworn to protect, binding them to the amulet to harness their power. What was meant to be a sacred duty turned into a curse that has haunted us ever since."
Elder Mei adds softly, "It was your ancestor, Xia Wen, who performed the binding ritual. The spirits, enraged by their imprisonment, swore vengeance on Xia Wen's bloodline. That is why the amulet responds to you—it recognizes your lineage."
Li Wei's stomach churns at the thought of being tied to such a dark history. They glance down at the amulet, its glow faint but persistent. "If my ancestor caused this, then there must be a way to undo it. How do I break the curse?"
Elder Zhang shakes his head. "The path to redemption lies in uncovering the truth of their suffering. You must face the spirits, hear their story, and offer them what they seek. But be warned—what they ask may come at a great cost."
Li Wei's resolve hardens. They've dealt with injustice and suffering in their line of work, but this is different. This is personal. "Where can I find the answers I need?"
The elders exchange uneasy glances before Elder Mei speaks again. "In the ruins of Xia Wen's ancestral home, deep within the forest. It is said that Xia Wen recorded everything about the ritual and the spirits in a hidden journal. If it still exists, it may hold the key to understanding their pain."
Li Wei stands, their mind made up. "Then I'll go to the ruins and find the journal. I'll end this curse, no matter what it takes."
As they leave the council house, the whispers grow louder, almost as if the spirits know Li Wei's intent. The cold wind cuts through the air, and the villagers watch silently from behind their windows, their faces pale and filled with fear.
The forest looms ahead, dark and foreboding. But Li Wei doesn't hesitate. With the amulet pulsing in their hand and the weight of their ancestors' sins on their shoulders, they step into the shadows, determined to uncover the truth.
