Chapter 83: Chapter 83: Doom of the Insects
Shuichi had truly not expected his opponent to lead with a blast of "insecticide" right off the bat. The subsequent brazen attitude of "Yeah, I'm targeting you!" was even more unexpected.
But as a seasoned veteran, Shuichi, relying on his excellent duelist's composure, quickly suppressed the impulse for a physical duel. He stated gravely, "Then, at this moment, the effect of 'Great Forest' activates! When an Insect-Type monster on the field is destroyed and sent to the Graveyard, I can add an Insect-Type monster with the same Level as the destroyed monster from my Deck to my hand."
He drew his Deck, fanned it out to search, and picked out another card to add to his hand.
"The destroyed 'Death Scythe Killer' was Level 8, so I add the Level 8 'Demon Shovel Grub' from my Deck to my hand!"
From the audience, a student from the Dueling Club couldn't help but exclaim, "Demon Shovel Grub, Watanabe's ace!"
"Is it coming out? Looks like Watanabe is really getting serious now."
Demon Shovel Grub, Level 8, ATK 2800. It can be Special Summoned by banishing just two Insect-Type monsters from the Graveyard, and it's the strongest main monster in Shuichi's deck.
"That freshman... it seems he's really provoked Watanabe," a rather tall senior girl said, arms crossed, shaking her head. "What an unlucky kid."
No one doubted that in the next turn, Shuichi could banish two insects from his Graveyard to instantly summon his powerful ace with 2800 ATK and launch a fierce offensive.
Of course, that was assuming the Shovel Grub was still in his hand next turn.
"I summon 'Don Zaloog'."
[Don Zaloog, ATK 1400]
"Don Zaloog, direct attack!"
The one-eyed leader whipped out his revolver, and bang bang, two shots directly pierced through Watanabe Shuichi's wide-open front field.
[Shuichi, LP 4000 → LP 2600]
Shuichi swayed, took the holographic impact, then immediately steadied himself, seemingly trying to project the calm demeanor of an expert: "This level of damage is nothing..."
"Don Zaloog's effect: when it inflicts battle damage, you can randomly discard one card from your opponent's hand."
"Nani?!"
Shuichi was shocked and instantly became nervous again.
He currently had two cards in his hand, both searched via "Great Forest." One was "Substitute Locust," and the other was "Demon Shovel Grub"—the latter being the Tamashii (Soul) of his deck.
In other words, there was a one-in-two chance his Tamashii would be shot down by this attack.
"That won't do!" Shuichi shouted. "Activate Trap Card! Sixth Sense! I declare two numbers between 1 and 6, and my opponent rolls a die! If the number rolled is one of the declared numbers, I draw cards from my Deck equal to that number. If I miss, I send cards from the top of my Deck to the Graveyard equal to that number!"
Just hearing the effect, one knew it was an eternally old banned card. If you guessed right, you drew cards; if you guessed wrong, you indiscriminately milled your deck—a powerful trap that was always a net gain.
Of course, the fact that K Company had made this card into a real-life card already showed it paled in comparison to those anime-exclusive draw engines that would never be released unless they were nerfed into oblivion. After all, this thing was a Trap, making it inherently less stable, and in an anime environment rampant with Spell Cards that let you draw three to five cards at a time, it actually seemed rather ordinary.
You Xuan realized he might have "gone native" a bit; seeing these cards that were practically sacred relics, having sat at the bottom of the banlist for ages and worshipped by duelists, no longer filled him with that initial awe.
"I declare the numbers five and six!" Shuichi announced.
Generally, people would declare these two numbers. Because no matter which numbers were declared, the probability of guessing correctly was equal, but if you hit, these two numbers offered the highest reward.
Hitting one of the two numbers counted as a success, a one-in-three probability, which wasn't particularly low.
The die tumbled and landed on the number 5.
"Excellent! Then I draw five cards!"
Hmm, five cards added to his hand in an instant, but You Xuan was already used to such sights and found it unremarkable.
Instantly replenishing his hand to five cards, his Tamashii was now mixed among them.
The probability had instantly become one in seven.
A gunshot rang out. Don Zaloog fired, piercing a hole through one of the cards.
"Hahahaha! You missed!"
Shuichi threw his head back and laughed heartily, carelessly sending the perforated card to the Graveyard.
"Too bad, it seems Lady Luck is on my side today, eh? Next turn, I shall call forth my Tamashii, Demon—"
But by then, You Xuan had already ended his Battle Phase and silently played another card, interrupting his chant.
"Spell Card 'Confiscation'. Pay 1000 Life Points, look at your opponent's hand, and choose one card to discard."
The senior's hearty laughter died abruptly.
[You Xuan, LP 4000 → LP 3000]
"Let's take a look at your hand, Senior," You Xuan said politely.
Watanabe Shuichi: "..."
He gritted his teeth, his facial muscles twitching a couple of times, before revealing his hand with an ugly expression.
He wore a pained look, like his Tamashii was being exposed for all to see.
"Then, please discard your Tamashii, Senior," You Xuan requested courteously.
Shuichi arduously pulled out his beloved ace card and tossed it into the Graveyard. His slow movements and expression made him look constipated.
"However, my turn isn't over yet."
You Xuan unhurriedly drew another card from his hand.
"I will now activate this card from my hand—
—Continuous Spell - Insecticide Net!
As long as this card is on the field, all Insect-Type monsters your opponent controls cannot declare an attack!"
Watanabe Shuichi almost spat out a mouthful of old blood.
Even many in the crowd couldn't help but gasp.
You really didn't plan on letting your opponent duel from the very beginning, did you?
Watanabe Shuichi: "You f—"
He now seemed to be starting to understand why this person had unhesitatingly chosen him as an opponent.
A duelist's courage? The daring to challenge a peak?
No, it had nothing to do with any of that.
He chose him simply because he thought he was the easiest to bully!
"I set two more cards face-down on the field. Turn end."
You Xuan declared the end of his turn. Seeing no movement after a moment, he tilted his head and kindly reminded, "It's your turn, Senior."
Why aren't you drawing a card, Senior?
Don't you want to?
Shuichi gritted his teeth: "My turn..."
He was already starting to think that the Dueling Club needed to add a new rule.
Not only were Osiris Red students barred from submitting applications, but dogs shouldn't be allowed either.
With the Insecticide Net now on the opponent's field, his entire deck's offense was sealed. Not to mention, his opponent had set two more cards at the end, and adding the one set on the first turn, the opponent now had a total of three face-downs in their backrow.
Last turn, he hadn't been too wary of the face-down cards, but now, combined with the dueling style his opponent had just demonstrated, he almost didn't dare to imagine what else was lurking in that backrow.
At a time like this, the one card in his entire deck that could save him from this dire situation was...
"Draw!"
Filled with raging fury, pouring all his impulses for a physical duel into this one make-or-break draw, he created a miracle!
"Spell Card - Heavy Storm!"
The moment Watanabe Shuichi raised the card, a violent storm swept across the entire field.
"All Spell and Trap Cards on both sides of the field are destroyed!"
