Chapter 19: Chapter 17 I Am Seiji Uchiha, And I Know Who You Are
Today has been a Long day. I appreciate Yesterday's Powerstones. Honestly the most I have received in a day. More Powerstones please.
...
In the Wastelands of Wall Maria, the quiet serenity of nature was brought to an end by the ominous rumbling across the land.
In the distance, The Northern Forest region welcomed a multitude of horses galloping towards its Grove of Tall Trees. Followed by the Tremors of countless Titan footsteps, shaking the very earth beneath them.
Erwin's grip on the reins was iron-tight, his eyes sharp and unyielding. He didn't look back. He didn't need to. The sound of thundering footsteps and bone-chilling roars was all the confirmation he required.
A twelve-meter Titan surged forward, its massive arm swinging downward in a reckless attempt to crush them.
"LEFT! NOW!" Erwin bellowed.
The formation split in an instant, the Titans crashing into the space where they had been just moments before.
A deafening BOOM erupted as trees splintered, dirt exploded into the air, and a soldier—not fast enough to react—was swallowed whole by a grinning behemoth.
No time to stop. No time to grieve.
They had to make it to the Grove.
Hange twisted in her saddle, adjusting her glasses even as she drew a flare gun from her belt. The flare hissed into the air, bursting into a bright-green signal.
"Formation B, MOVE!" she shouted.
To their right, another unit of soldiers on ODM gear swung from the sparse trees, drawing the Titans' attention. The stampede split, some Titans turning toward the airborne bait—but not all.
"Damn it, they're not taking the distraction!" one soldier cursed.
The Titans behind them had already picked their targets. They had no intention of chasing anything else.
Erwin knew they were running out of time.
"GO FASTER!" someone screamed.
But before the words even fully left their mouth—one of the lead riders was yanked off their horse.
A five-meter Titan lunged from the side, its elongated arms snapping forward like a frog catching prey. The soldier didn't even have time to scream before its jaws clamped down—bones crunched, blood sprayed.
The Titan didn't stop to chew. It simply kept running, its lifeless, hollow eyes locked on the next victim.
"INCOMING! TWO O'CLOCK!"
Another Titan, this one even larger, barreled toward them, its massive foot poised to crush the entire front line.
"NOW! ODM—"
The ride was hellish. With people dying at every possible turn.
"…Finally! Up ahead." a soldier screamed at the top of his lungs, his facial features seemingly suffering from paralysis.
A few minutes after Levi's departure, The Expedition force finally broke through the Titan blockade after paying a necessary sacrifice. Their horses kicking up dust as they galloped toward their destination. Behind them, a stampede of Titans—a grotesque mass of towering flesh and mindless hunger—pursued with terrifying speed.
"No Titans in the way …"
"…Thank the Walls …"
"… Idiots. Don't thank the Walls just yet. Haven't you noticed the hungry mob behind us?"
"Commander Erwin. Instructions? …" another asked, Erwin at the forefront.
The man frowned, thinking deeply. Their goal, the Northern Forest Grove, had been achieved.
However, unwanted followers had been attracted in the process.
Erwin didn't need an official report to know that the 35th Expedition Team had suffered heavy losses. It all depended on how heavy. In his original plan, the combined regiment's would take a breather and evaluate their losses. Then separate to cover more ground after finalizing how many soldiers they had left.
Ilse Langnar would lead the main search team to where she met The Target.
If all goes well, he would be somewhere around. That would conclude the easy part. Now, however, the easy part was much harder than he thought.
Not far behind, The Titans were gaining on them. Once they stopped or slowed down, then the expedition team would be caught up with. This could be avoided as long as they zipped into the trees with 3D Maneuver Gear.
But that would mean the loss of their horses after. Without enough time to tie them down, the horses would continue running once they dismounted.
The first wasn't even an option. Even a moment's delay could lead to larger casualties. So currently, there was only one viable course of action.
"All soldiers! Switch to 3D Maneuver Gear immediately. Head for the trees, abandon the horses." It was what everyone had expected. The moment they reached range, countless cables fired skyward, yanking soldiers into the trees.
"Damn! Finally, a sense of security …" One muttered, falling on his butt, exhausted.
"Yeah. Hope you can still say that when we need horses to get outta here…" Another uttered, watching as the horses ran deeper into the forest as the soldiers all disembarked.
"…."
The air was thick with the scent of blood and sweat. The expedition had finally reached the Grove, their ODM gear propelling them high into the trees. Below them, dozens of Titans roamed aimlessly, their grotesque forms shifting as they sought prey. Their hollow groans filled the forest, mixing with the heavy breaths of exhausted soldiers.
From his perch, Erwin surveyed the aftermath.
No surprise, the Total numbers weren't even half what they had brought outside Trost.
"I ... I can't unsee this. Can I? …" The Garrison soldiers, those unfortunate enough to have joined the Survey Corps for this mission yet fortunate enough to survive this long, clung to the trees with haunted expressions. Their hands trembled against the worn leather grips of their ODM gear.
For this lot, The Commander didn't pay much heed. Cruel as it sounded, it was already expected that many would die. It was the reason why each expedition required large numbers.
To maximize the efficiency of the Long-Range Scouting Formation, people needed to be within Titan vicinity to avoid them. The sides and Front lines, were a mix of Garrison and Survey Corps soldiers. With the superior numbers of The Garrison, certainly much more of the former than the latter.
In this expedition, The Garrison Regiment were expected to have the highest casualty ratings.
"Miche." he called out. A moment later, a tall, well-built man with blond hair, a dark mustache and a beard landed on his tree branch alongside Hange.
Miche Zacharius.
Elite fighter in the Survey Corps, considered to be the second-strongest soldier ever since Levi's appearance.
"… Go high …" Erwin ordered. "See what you can find."
Miche nodded in response. Turning away, his Maneuver cables pulled him to the top of the trees, disappearing above the leaves.
Turning his gaze elsewhere, The Commander spotted something he did want to see.
"Langnar …"
Not far away, Ilse Langnar sat on a thick branch, cradling a minor wound on her arm. The moment she saw Erwin and Hange approach, her eyes widened with relief.
"Commander …"
"Where's Levi? …"
"Uh … The Captain told me to wait here," she informed them. "He went deeper into the Grove… alone."
Erwin's brows furrowed. Levi hadn't returned. That was unlike him.
"I see. In that case …". Before he could finish, the sound of approaching ODM cables whizzed through the air. Many turned their attention in that direction.
"Looks like he's back …" his voice halted. Under many gazes, more soldiers arrived, swinging through the trees—some bloodied, others unscathed.
It was the group of deserters Levi had encountered earlier. With Seiji blocking their path forward, they had no choice but to return the same way they came.
They emerged from the darkness of the Grove, panting and disoriented. One of them—a man trembling violently, his face drained of color—collapsed to his knees. His uniform was soaked in blood, his arms cradled awkwardly against his chest.
No.
He had no hands.
Strips of cloth, torn from Survey Corps capes, were wrapped around his severed wrists, barely slowing the bleeding. The surrounding soldiers looked equally shaken, their gazes darting from side to side as if they expected something—or someone—to come after them.
Erwin's expression darkened. "What happened to him?"
The deserters hesitated. Then, under the weight of Erwin's piercing gaze, one finally spoke.
"It was the …" The blond youth revealed everything that had happened. From their dereliction of duty, to running into the Grove, to the encounter with Seiji to the now crippled soldier attacking him.
Every single addition made Erwin's fair complexion darker and good-looking features crumpled.
He wasn't the only one. Upon listening, a wave of anger rippled through the Survey Corps ranks. The soldiers who had already lost so much stiffened, their faces contorting with barely restrained fury.
"You did what?" Hange's voice cut through the air like a blade.
The deserters flinched as the realization of their fate slowly settled in.
No one spoke.
Then, in the space of a heartbeat—Hange drew her blades.
"You damnable bastards," she spat, eyes burning with fury. "Do you know how much blood the scouts have shed? Why we shed it?…"
"To take back our freedom from The Titans. We all ride each day, knowing it might be our last. All find hope for humanity. Now you … You … You cowards …"
No one spoke. Not the Deserters, Not Erwin and especially not The Garrison.
"… You actually let innocent men and women waste their lives because you were too scared to do your jobs? I'll chop you up and feed you to the Titans myself!"
The deserters recoiled in fear, but before Hange could act, Erwin raised a hand.
"That's enough ...". His voice remained cold, unshaken. His expression returning to normal.
"How did you escape?" he asked.
The deserters hesitated again. Then, one of them murmured, "Captain Levi saved us… He fought the target."
Silence.
Erwin's sharp gaze hardened further. "Levi fought him?"
"…Well, we didn't see it. Just as he blocked an attack, he told us to leave if we wanted to live."
"I see."
Erwin exhaled slowly. This was worse than he thought.
Their prime objective to win over had been attacked by their own men. Then, Levi blocked his attempt to kill them. Now chances of Seiji Uchiha being hostile had climbed to almost definite.
Probably, he and Levi were fighting right now. Just a single action had derailed his plans.
In that case, he had to improvise. There was no time to waste.
"Where are they?"
"Not too far. Just straight ahead and …" It happened then.
The sound of an object piercing through the air resounded in the Northern Tree Grove.
It tore through the air with terrifying precision, shooting towards The Deserters. Piercing through the skull of the deserter with missing hands.
SQUELCH
The sound of bone splitting echoed across the forest.
The man froze. His eyes widened in shock—before he collapsed, lifeless. Under everyone's horrified gaze, his corpse fell from the Tree, towards the earth and getting grabbed by a Titan before it could touch the ground.
A stunned silence followed.
Then, every soldier's head snapped upward.
In a higher branch, a pair of scarlet eyes were staring right back at them. Instantly, everyone felt a chill run down their spines.
Wondering what would have happened if that had been aimed at them instead. Of course, that thought was fleeting as everyone quickly recognized the figure hung over his shoulder.
" No way, Is that …."
"It can't be …"
Everyone muttered, voices full of shock and disbelief. This was particularly apparent for a certain group of individuals.
"Captain!"
In his grasp—unmoving, —was The Captain of The Special Operations Squad. Humanity's Strongest Soldier, Levi Ackerman.
"… I can't believe it. Captain Levi lost?…"
The Deserters who just witnessed one of their own get impaled through the skull immediately turned as white as a sheet of paper.
Meanwhile,
'This isn't good'.
Erwin thought with a frown. He had suspected something like this would happen ever since he heard The Garrison report.
Unfortunately, his worries came true. Humanity's best was beaten by the opponent.
Not good at all.
In that moment, Seiji's eyes moved, locking onto the other Deserters. Moving his free right hand, a Kunai appeared out of nowhere.
Seeing the weapon quite similar to the one previously used to murder a Garrison member, Seiji's actions seemed to ignite a power keg. Multiple soldiers immediately readied their weapons while taking a combat stance.
Instantly, Erwin Smith was defended from four sides by four different individuals.
"Commander Erwin, be careful!"
Petra Ral, Gunther Schultz, Eld Jinn, and Oluo bozado. The Members of The Special Operations Squad, Levi's subordinates.
"… Stand down." However, Erwin's response was not what they expected.
"But Sir ...."
"No one attacks. That's an order." Erwin cut them off sternly. His voice firm and unwavering as he fixed his gaze on the opposite figure who looked young enough to be his son.
"First, I apologize ...." The man began.
Seiji raised an eyebrow, his actions halting. "It was not my intention for this to happen. For this, you have my sincerest apologies ...."
Erwin paused. Then continued.
"I am the 13th Commander of The Survey Corps, Erwin Smith and I assure you that we aren't hostile. My intent was not to attack but to seek you out."
"…." a long silence followed. Until …
"I am Seiji Uchiha …" Seiji uttered, his tone bland. "… And I know who you are." Those were his last words before he threw out the Kunai.
