Chapter 269: Chapter 267: Zilan Xuan (Part 1)
"It seems like I'm in a cave this time. What bad luck." After entering a new world and returning to his normal size, Daniel Davis looked around at his surroundings and frowned.
"There are people inside." As he expanded his Observation Haki, he sensed that there were people deep inside the cave, as well as several people outside the cave.
"A dragon-severing stone?" With a hint of curiosity, Daniel didn't head straight for the outside of the cave but instead walked deeper inside. After walking about fifty meters, he encountered a massive stone door, with a winch mechanism to the side.
"Judging by this design, it doesn't look like a modern society."
"Impressive. This winch even needs a key to unlock." Observing the winch, Daniel noticed that it was securely chained and locked. Instead of breaking the chains, he decided to use his Ope Ope no Mi ability, performing a "Room" and teleporting himself inside the stone door.
"This is quite a surprise." After entering, Daniel immediately saw a large tank, about ten meters tall, connected to the mountainside. Inside the tank, a figure swam back and forth, a scene that felt strangely familiar to Daniel.
"No way, it's actually here. What luck." It didn't take long for Daniel to recall why this scene was so familiar. He soon realized that he was in the world of *The Legend of Qin: The Rise of a Phoenix*.
"Yan Lingji?" With a sudden thought, Daniel walked directly to the front of the tank, locking eyes with Yan Lingji through the crystal-clear glass.
In this era, glass didn't exist, so the tank holding Yan Lingji was made of either crystal or something similar.
"Does she not need to breathe? Or can she breathe underwater?" Daniel mused as he looked at Yan Lingji, who was just inches away. Even with his current abilities, he still needed to breathe eventually.
"Is it a talent, or some sort of martial art?" With that thought in mind, Daniel punched the crystal tank. As the glass shattered, he quickly moved several meters back, avoiding the splash of water.
As the water drained from the tank, Yan Lingji slowly emerged. Her graceful figure and the way her long black hair covered her body caused Daniel to glance away immediately after taking a quick look.
After a moment of consideration, Daniel took off his coat and tossed it to her.
"Thank you." Yan Lingji didn't hesitate at all. She took Daniel's coat and put it on. Though it was probably her first time seeing such a garment, she quickly figured out how to wear it.
Daniel had plenty of clothes on him; he carried various supplies with him at all times. However, it wouldn't be appropriate to pull them out in front of Yan Lingji.
"Somehow, this is even more enticing. No wonder people say that being half-revealed is the most alluring." As Daniel watched Yan Lingji wear his coat, he found her even more attractive than before.
"And who might you be? What is your purpose?" Yan Lingji walked gracefully over to Daniel, smiling as she asked her question.
"I just happened to pass by here by chance, nothing more."
"Passing by?" Yan Lingji's expression revealed a slight hint of mockery. She knew exactly what this place was, and she certainly didn't believe his excuse.
Seeing her expression, Daniel could guess what she was thinking, but it was understandable. If he were in her position, he wouldn't believe it either, even though it was the truth.
Although Yan Lingji didn't believe him, she didn't press the issue further.
She then walked over to the stone door, carefully examining the surroundings before looking at Daniel with a puzzled expression.
Boom!
As Yan Lingji stood there, a bit of confusion and surprise in her eyes, Daniel shattered the dragon-severing stone with a single kick. Unlike the matchless Ghost Soldier, Yan Lingji had no way of breaking through such a stone door despite her impressive martial arts. While her flames could easily melt armor and weapons, they were ineffective against such thick stone.
Yan Lingji's martial arts were centered around her flames, so her physical strength wasn't particularly high. Otherwise, that tank wouldn't have been able to hold her. Her flames couldn't be used effectively in water.
"Someone's escaping!" As Daniel and Yan Lingji made their way out of the cave, they were quickly spotted by the guards stationed there. After all, the noise from Daniel breaking the stone was impossible to ignore. Ten soldiers in silver armor immediately charged at them, weapons drawn.
"Well-trained, I see." Wearing full armor and still moving so quickly wasn't something ordinary people could do. Just as Daniel was about to make a move, Yan Lingji rushed forward, her fingers glowing with flames that quickly melted the spears of the two soldiers at the front.
The cave wasn't large, so two soldiers could charge side by side at most. Any more would have been crowded. Such an environment was unfavorable for soldiers trained to fight in formation, but it was ideal for Yan Lingji.
Before long, Yan Lingji had dealt with all ten soldiers, many of whom died horrible deaths as their armor melted onto their bodies. The sensation was likely indescribable without firsthand experience.
"These flames aren't much different from the Flame Alchemist's." Ordinary fire wouldn't easily melt iron, let alone do so so quickly.
"Release the arrows!" Just as they reached the cave's entrance, Daniel and Yan Lingji heard a shout from ahead. Four soldiers armed with crossbows blocked the entrance, their weapons aimed at the pair.
As the soldiers prepared to fire, Yan Lingji struck first. A thin fire dragon shot from her hand, and the four soldiers were engulfed in flames before they could react. Yan Lingji seized the moment to dash out of the cave.
Daniel calmly followed her, walking out of the cave amidst the soldiers' screams. When he finally emerged outside, Yan Lingji was standing quietly to one side, surrounded by the bodies of more than a dozen soldiers.
They were now in a small valley, with the cave situated within it.
"The signal fire has been lit. Reinforcements will be here soon." After Daniel emerged, Yan Lingji looked at the thick black smoke rising nearby and spoke softly.
As one of Baiyue's most important prisoners, Yan Lingji was heavily guarded, with nearly thirty soldiers watching her and a signal fire ready to be lit.
"Then let's go. Why are you looking at me like that?" Noticing Yan Lingji's hesitant expression, Daniel urged her.
"What is your purpose?"
"I already told you, I was just passing by. I didn't have any particular purpose; I just didn't like seeing a beautiful woman imprisoned."
"Then I'll take my leave."
"Please, go ahead."
As soon as Yan Lingji said she was leaving, Daniel made a casual gesture, indicating she was free to go. Although Yan Lingji was beautiful, he wasn't the type to be easily swayed by a pretty face. Besides, the world of *The Legend of Qin* was full of beautiful women, with only a few exceptions.
After giving Daniel a deep look, Yan Lingji used her lightness skill to leave. Daniel could guess what she intended to do. Having finally escaped, she would likely try to rescue her companions, although Daniel thought it more likely she would be captured again.
"Today's luck isn't bad. I even ran into some familiar faces." After Yan Lingji left, Daniel stood on a nearby mountain peak and saw two figures, one black and one white, swiftly approaching. Their lightness skills seemed more advanced than Yan Lingji's.
"Moya, Baifa, and Baichou." After a moment of silence, Daniel disappeared.
Not long after Daniel disappeared, Moya and Baifa arrived at the scene. They showed no emotion as they surveyed the numerous bodies of Korean soldiers. After Moya nodded to Baifa, the two of them rushed into the cave. Moments later, they emerged and began searching the area.
Finding nothing useful, they quickly left together.
Shortly after they left, nearly a hundred Korean cavalrymen rode into the valley, beginning to survey the scene and clean up the aftermath.
Meanwhile, in a secluded room on the second floor of Zilan Xuan in the capital city of Xinzheng, Han Fei, dressed in purple, stood by the window, holding a wine cup and gazing at the signal fire rising in the distance.
"I didn't expect there to be such a place near Xinzheng." Han Fei murmured. The use of a signal fire meant the place wasn't ordinary. Signal fires weren't something used lightly, and Han Fei, who had memorized the geography and situation of all of Korea, knew there shouldn't be such a place near Xinzheng.
"He's already gone to investigate. We should know soon what that place is." Zinu said as she refilled Han Fei's wine cup.
"Perhaps this is an opportunity."
"Xinzheng City, so grand. I wonder what Xianyang City will be like." Daniel had traveled through many worlds, but upon realizing which world he was in, he couldn't help but feel sentimental. No other world had evoked such feelings in him.
At this time, Xinzheng City's gates were bustling with activity. People and carts moved in and out, while soldiers in impressive Korean armor stood guard at the gate.
Daniel's presence immediately attracted attention. After a quick glance at him, most people turned their gaze elsewhere, including the Korean soldiers guarding the gate, who gave him only a cursory look before losing interest.
Daniel drew attention mainly because of his attire. Most of the people entering and leaving the gate were dressed in coarse cloth, with a few in silk riding in carriages. But even so, none of their clothes were
as fine or strange as Daniel's.
Fortunately, the world of *The Legend of Qin* was a fantastical one, where people had hair in all sorts of colors, so Daniel's unusual attire didn't stand out too much.
Even so, his expensive clothes made most people avoid him as they walked. In this era, clothes were often a symbol of status.
Daniel dressed primarily for comfort, so even though he knew his outfit was out of place for this time, he didn't bother to change.
"Maybe I should start wearing clothes from a thousand years in the future." With that thought, Daniel walked through the city gate, with the guards making no extra effort to stop him.
However, a few people who had been watching Daniel near the gate followed him as he entered Xinzheng City.
A man alone, dressed in fine clothes, was an easy target for some.
"Zilan Xuan." Walking along the main street of Xinzheng, Daniel soon spotted the large and well-known Zilan Xuan.
The four-story wooden structure was surrounded by walls on three sides, with a fence on the fourth. The courtyard was filled with peach trees, and the building itself was painted in bright red. The corridors were adorned with carved flowers, and rows of large red lanterns hung from the eaves, ready to light up the night.
This was one of the three biggest pleasure houses in the world, a famous place for indulgence, where a single night's expenses could easily equal half a year's wages for an ordinary person. That was the minimum; as for the maximum, it was hard to say.
Because it wasn't yet dark, Zilan Xuan was still quiet. But once night fell, it would become one of the liveliest places in Xinzheng City.
"I see the Scorpion Gang has taken an interest. How amusing." Ducking into a secluded alley, Daniel dealt with the two men who had been following him, extracting information about Xinzheng in the process.
"This gang was later destroyed by Weizhuang, right? Lucky for them." With that, Daniel finished off the two men.
The Scorpion Gang specialized in kidnapping, extortion, and trafficking. A wealthy stranger like Daniel, alone in Xinzheng, was the perfect target for them.
If it weren't for the fact that the gang would eventually be wiped out by Weizhuang, Daniel might have been tempted to destroy them himself.
"Ghost soldiers stealing funds—so that's what's going on here." As a low-level gang, the Scorpion Gang also gathered intelligence, and Daniel learned that the biggest recent event in Korea was the ghost soldiers stealing ten thousand taels from the Korean military.
"If I remember correctly, Han Fei's uncle was involved in that. Impressive, collaborating with the general to rob the royal treasury. This guy is something else, though it's a pity for Han Fei."
Han Fei was indeed remarkable, even suggesting that the world could be divided into ninety-nine parts. Unfortunately, his opponent was Ying Zheng, who wasn't satisfied with anything less than one hundred percent.
No matter how capable Han Fei was, he couldn't win against Ying Zheng.
"It's quite lively." As night fell, the streets of Xinzheng began to darken, but Zilan Xuan was ablaze with light. The roads nearby were bustling as the city's nobles began their nightly revelries.
"I wonder how many candles they go through in a night." Daniel estimated that hundreds of candles were lit throughout Zilan Xuan, burning all night long.
"You're a new face here. Where do you come from?" As Daniel entered Zilan Xuan, his presence quickly caught the attention of Zinu, who was making her rounds, dressed in her signature purple attire.
"From the west," Daniel replied with a smile.
