Wizard Lord:I can Extract Anything

Chapter 165: Chapter 165: Soul Gorge

On the Blackbone Plains, the once bustling Floating City Fortress now felt somewhat deserted. It was the thirtieth year after the decisive battle, and the wizards' development of the Insect Nest World had progressed steadily, with the insects' resistance confined to a very limited area.

New insects born from the slave mother insects were returning to the nests. These insects were indistinguishable from the former Black Crystal Insects, except for the slave mark imprinted on them at birth.

The Black Crystal Insect Tribe had become a race of wizard slaves. Though a tragic fate, it was far better than those species that the wizards had exterminated entirely.

In the harsh realities of planar wars, weak races didn't even qualify to be pets.

The history of the Black Crystal Insects was rewritten by the wizards: no longer were they offspring of the Mother Insect God, but creations of the wizards' experiments. Wizards were now the creators of the Black Crystal Insects.

The cause of this planar war was rebranded as an internal conflict within the swarm, with the evil Mother Insect God seducing most insects to rebel against the noble wizards. Those insects still resisting were labeled as "sin insects" by the new generation.

Wizards became the victims of this war.

Through systematic revision, the new generation of Black Crystal Insects fully accepted their role as a subsidiary race to the wizards. As long as this perception persisted for several generations, even if the sin insects tried to spread the true history, it would have no impact.

Eventually, the Black Crystal Insects would be wholly enslaved by the wizards.

He who controls the past controls the present.

...

Ringing... ringing...

A noisy alarm pulled Richard from his research. He silenced the alarm and pocketed the crystal shards before him.

Richard's alarm was set to ring every 180 days, signaling his time to undertake a task assigned by the command.

Exiting his cabin, he noticed the faint glow of the blue ice mountain nearby, the Mother Insect God inside both sacred and grotesque.

This mountain had become a symbol of the wizards' might, with the evil Mother Insect God frozen as a warning to the new insects not to repeat the same mistakes.

Arriving at the command tower, the former center of the planar war had transformed into a task hall. All black wizards remaining in the Insect Nest World were required to collect tasks here.

As exploration of the Insect Nest World neared completion, the number of tasks dwindled. Wizards now had to choose tasks themselves, and the rewards had decreased.

Each wizard remaining in the world had to complete at least two tasks annually.

Many black wizards opted to return to the wizarding world, finding the otherworldly realm less appealing and comfortable than home.

In the Insect Nest World, wizards were always outsiders.

Scanning the task board, Richard chose an intriguing task.

"Explore the Soul Gorge... Interesting."

According to the task description, Soul Gorge was a unique canyon on the world's edge.

In Black Crystal Insect lore, it was a cursed place, home to a soul-devouring demon sealed within. Once awakened, it would consume the souls of all within, leaving only husks.

Though ominous, a third-circle wizard who had passed through once noted that the gorge's geomagnetic field disrupted the insects' senses, disorienting them and potentially damaging their cognitive organs.

The task was to investigate the gorge's specifics and submit a report to the command, offering a meager reward of ten magic stones.

For Richard, this was sufficient. He needed to remain in this world, not for the reward.

While the Insect Nest World held little value for most wizards, for Richard, the ice mountain sealing the Mother Insect God was a goldmine.

Through his energy vision, Richard had made progress in studying the mountain over the years, discovering a unique energy structure he applied to the Rune Chain Sealing Technique.

This significantly enhanced the technique's effectiveness.

Leaving the task hall, Richard intended to head straight to the task location but encountered someone unexpected outside.

"Ellie, are you heading back to the wizarding world?"

In their black wizard team, Lawrence had left the Insect Nest World in the fifteenth year after the decisive battle to prepare for his second-circle promotion, but Ellie had stayed until now.

"Yes, my knowledge isn't enough for further research," Ellie admitted, somewhat frustrated.

Ellie, holding a notebook and wearing gold-rimmed glasses, appeared both intellectual and beautiful.

Like Richard, Ellie had stayed to study the Dead Silence Ice Mountain Sealing Technique, but without Richard's energy vision, her progress was slow, yielding minimal results.

"Alright," Richard said regretfully. Having Ellie around during research was nice; her departure would leave him a true recluse.

"When you go back, check on my house. The two subhumans I keep might be dying of old age. Just bury them in the yard."

Ellie nodded. "Sure, I'll check for you."

Bidding Ellie farewell, Richard headed to Soul Gorge as marked on the task map.

Wizard exploration of the Insect Nest World was nearly complete, making the maps highly detailed. The world contained dangerous areas like the Abyss of Origin and Mushroom Fields, attracting many wizards for research.

En route, Richard encountered a flock of moth troops flying playfully in the sky. These insects had once caused significant losses to the wizards, destroying dozens of war airships. Now, they were the wizards' greatest allies.

The moths parted to let Richard through, offering a peculiar wizard salute and shouting:

"Master Wizard!"

Richard nodded to them and continued flying to his destination.

Compared to the wizarding world, the Insect Nest World wasn't large. It took Richard about half a month to reach the location.

From above, Soul Gorge appeared small, only a few dozen kilometers long. Surrounding it were low plants utilizing the world's brilliant starlight for photosynthesis, bringing a hint of life to the barren landscape.

Landing, Richard opened his secret realm, pulling Ulysses from his mushroom feast.

"Gah, what are you doing? I was eating!" Ulysses protested loudly.

After years of coexistence, Ulysses and the World Mushroom had somewhat reconciled. At Richard's request, the taste of sacrificial mushrooms improved, and Ulysses began casually snacking on them.

"Help me check if this place has any issues," Richard said, gesturing toward Soul Gorge.

Despite the third-circle wizard's observations, Richard wanted Ulysses to double-check out of caution.

"Gah, let me see."

Ulysses' eyes glimmered briefly before shaking his head.

"Gah, nothing's wrong. This place is where two ley lines intersect, creating a chaotic geomagnetic field. Occasionally, spatial rifts might appear."

"Spatial rifts?"

"Gah, don't worry about that. Given the ley line intersection's strength, any rift would be pinhole-sized and extremely rare," Ulysses assured dismissively.

With that, Ulysses opened a rift himself and flew back into the secret realm.

As Ulysses recovered from his soul injuries, his abilities grew. With the World Mushroom's permission, he could freely enter and exit the realm.

Reassured by Ulysses' words, Richard proceeded into Soul Gorge confidently.

Immediately upon entering, Richard sensed a faint energy pulse from beneath his feet, and his vision blurred slightly, inducing dizziness.

"Such strong geomagnetic fields," Richard remarked, surprised.

Activating his magic barrier, Richard adjusted its frequency to counter the fields. Once modified, his discomfort vanished.

With sufficient knowledge, a wizard can calmly face various crises.

Surveying the gorge, Richard recorded its terrain and collected numerous rock samples.

Under the geomagnetic influence, Soul Gorge housed many unique magnetic stones, valuable in alchemical machinery.

After exploring, Richard settled in the gorge.

The report to the command couldn't be hasty. Though he identified the anomalies as geomagnetic effects, Richard needed to document the field's intensity and fluctuation patterns.

This required time.

Days passed uneventfully in Soul Gorge. Richard soon gathered most data, needing only to record an intensity spike to complete his task.

Watching his instruments, Richard awaited the geomagnetic surge.

"According to the pattern... Three, two, one!"

As the countdown ended, Richard's magic barrier rippled, the strong geomagnetic field even impacting it.

Under the field's influence, a hallucinogenic aurora appeared in the sky.

Enthralled, Richard retrieved a recording crystal ball.

"Beautiful, must capture this."

The surge lasted nearly thirty seconds. As the peak passed, the field began to wane.

Admiring the aurora through the crystal ball, Richard felt his journey worthwhile, oblivious to the pinhole-sized spatial rift opening behind him.

Black-red mist seeped from the rift, enveloping the gorge in an instant.

Thud!

The crystal ball dropped to the ground.

Richard stood rigid, eyes closing slowly, breaths steadying.

As if... he were asleep.

Beyond the rift, Richard's eyes opened slowly. Gazing at the blood moon above, he wondered:

"Where is this place?"
