Chapter 238: The Deathly General

The Ancient Battlefield, near its core.

Night had settled, casting a dark and oppressive hue across the sky and earth. Deep within a mountain range, still some distance from Vientiane City, the flickering light of a campfire illuminated two figures seated beside it. They remained calm despite the occasional distant roars of beasts piercing the night.

The two figures were none other than Lin Langtian and Jinwu, who had journeyed tirelessly from the northwest to reach Vientiane City. Although they had traveled at their highest speed, the journey had taken nearly four to five days, especially with the interruption caused by obtaining the Wood Emperor Sect's legacy.

"At our current pace, we should reach our destination in about two days," Lin Langtian said, stretching lazily beside the fire.

The acquisition of the Wood Emperor's Threefold Art had deepened his desire for the Celestial Demon Elder's legacy. He felt a growing certainty that while the Vermilion Bird's flame and the Wood Emperor's techniques were powerful, only the Celestial Demon Elder's inheritance could truly elevate him to another level. Once he mastered the power of the Extradimensional Fiends, what changes would await him?

Jinwu nodded, quietly committed to whatever Lin Langtian aimed to achieve. Ever since Lin Langtian allowed him to call him "big brother," Jinwu had pledged himself as Lin Langtian's most loyal brother.

As night fully enveloped them, Jinwu listened to Lin Langtian outline the next phase of their journey while roasting a rabbit over the fire. Then, suddenly, his expression hardened, and his gaze darted to the northwest.

"What's wrong?" Lin Langtian asked, noticing Jinwu's sudden alertness.

"One of my clones just disappeared," Jinwu replied, his expression turning serious.

"Oh?" Lin Langtian's expression darkened as well. Jinwu's clones, though not particularly powerful, were difficult to eliminate without making a sound. It would take a skilled opponent to do so.

"Seems we've attracted some unwanted attention," Lin Langtian said, his eyes narrowing. "Whoever's lurking in the shadows is likely here with ill intentions. I wonder if it's the Great Qian Dynasty, the Great Zhao Dynasty, or someone else?"

"Where did it happen?" Lin Langtian asked, his gaze glinting coldly. Being stalked didn't sit well with him.

"About eight miles northwest," Jinwu replied after sensing where his clone had disappeared.

Hearing this, Lin Langtian let out a cold chuckle and extended a hand. A scarlet flame shot from his palm, transforming into a crimson net that spread toward the empty space in the direction Jinwu had indicated.

The flame net radiated intense heat, causing the very air to sizzle and emit wisps of smoke. Under Lin Langtian and Jinwu's watchful gazes, the net spread across the seemingly empty area. Just as it was about to close in, a distortion rippled through the air, and a bright light flared, repelling the net.

From this strange distortion, a shadowy figure appeared, exuding a peculiar aura—similar to murderous intent, yet colder and lifeless.

"Well, well," the figure sneered, its hollow gaze fixed on Lin Langtian. "Impressive that you managed to sense me."

"Who are you, creeping around in the dark? What do you want?" Lin Langtian asked, his initial surprise giving way to a calm expression. The figure was powerful, perhaps the strongest opponent he'd encountered on the Ancient Battlefield so far, but Lin Langtian felt no fear.

Jinwu remained silent, his gaze locked on the newcomer as he shifted into a deadly stance. His usually composed expression turned fierce, and a chill surged around him, transforming his presence into that of a fearsome beast.

"Heh, my name is beyond your worth, but if you insist, you may call me the Deathly General," the figure replied, his voice dripping with confidence.

"Deathly General?" Lin Langtian's brow furrowed as the name stirred his memory. It seemed he had attracted the attention of the forces from the Western Mystical Domain.

He recalled that in his previous life, the Western Mystical Domain had sent agents to infiltrate the Hundred Dynasties War, aiming to seize control of the Ancient Battlefield. The Deathly General was one such agent, posing a dangerous threat that could have easily ensnared Lin Dong had it not been for Little Marten's protection.

But why had the Western Mystical Domain taken an interest in him, he wondered? He had never provoked them.

"So, Deathly General, what exactly do you want by skulking around?" Lin Langtian's voice dropped to a warning tone. If this Deathly General truly intended to cause trouble, Lin Langtian would not hesitate to kill him. He knew the Western Mystical Domain would ultimately fail in its plans and, in a few years, would fall to the demonic forces entirely.

The Deathly General sneered. "You think just because you bested two super dynasties, you're a top contender in the Ancient Battlefield? My faction is far beyond your imagination. Be sensible and hand over the two legacies you carry."

"Oh, so that's what this is about?" Lin Langtian replied with a glint of understanding. He hadn't expected the reason he was targeted to be the Vermilion Bird and Wood Emperor legacies. This Deathly General clearly had his ear to the ground—knowledge of the Vermilion Bird legacy was one thing, but for him to also know about the Wood Emperor's inheritance, which Lin Langtian had only just acquired, showed his information network was impressive.

"These legacies are wasted on someone from a mere lower dynasty," the Deathly General sneered. "Only I can truly unleash their full potential."

Originally, the agents of the Western Mystical Domain had orders not to expose their identities prematurely. But the discovery that a mere young warrior from a lesser dynasty possessed two ancient legacies had sparked the Deathly General's greed. The legacies were invaluable treasures, and even if he couldn't use them himself, offering them to a powerful figure in his own domain would surely elevate his standing.

But just as he was envisioning his own future prestige, Lin Langtian's next words froze him in place.

"Heh. A filthy rat scurrying in the shadows dares to dream of stealing my inheritance?"
