Chapter 23: Rover
[Author's note. I decided to make everything go original. So, while the story may relate to the original Wuwa storyline, the plotline would be something I create. For example, relations and boss fights. So expect something entirely different from the original game! Have fun reading!
This might be the only chapter where I wrote about Rover's interaction with the people. Since this story is from Katsuri's perspective, I figured I should focus more on her part. Sorry for everyone that wanted to see Rover aura farms.]
[P/S thanks for the support!]
"I didn't know all the ships in Ragunna are Echoes. That troupe isn't as special as I thought..." the Black haired traveler listened to the talking Echo.
"Hehe, now I can't even imagine what kind of Echoes we might see in the city."
Noticing the chances, she chimed in to tease the Echo.
"Maybe we'll come across some that look like you, a whole pack of them." She smiled.
"You're kidding me... Even in the land of Echoes, I, Abby, will always be the most special one!" Abby, the talking Echo, responded back.
In a few moments, Abby hiccupped, before going back into the traveler's Tacet Mark.
With a blank face, Rover walked towards the massive gate that was being guarded by two Echoes and an individual that was checking every single visitor.
But during her check up, something weird happened.
She was stopped by the Acolyte and was forced to show a permit of some kind for having a Reserved Terminal?
Fortunately, she had the invitation cards given by the Monteli family, otherwise she might've been rejected from entering Rinascita.
It was also here that she met another Acolyte. She introduced herself as Phoebe.
For a moment, Abby appeared.
But for some reason, he seemed... scared.
He was hiding behind Rover, away from Phoebe.
Phoebe, taking note of this, felt her heart shatter.
'I'm... hated by a unique Echo!? Nooo-!'
Meanwhile, Abby was whispering something to Rover, making sure that Phoebe can't hear.
"Hey... I don't like the smell that is lingering on her. Reminds me of something terrible."
Confused, Rover asked Abby to explain in better term.
"What do you mean?"
"I'm not quite sure..."
Although Rover was quite concerned about the well being of Phoebe, she still can't push aside what Abby's saying.
"Um... I'm sorry? Trust me, I'm not a bad person!"
"Yes, we know. But can I ask a question?"
"Yes, as long as it's not too personal, I can answer anything."
Before asking, Rover consulted with Abby silently. "So you're saying that the smell lingers on her, right? Not that it's coming from her?"
"Yup. Exactly what I meant."
"In that case, you don't need to show such reaction, right?"
"Eh... You're right, but... I can't help it! It's terrifying!"
Phoebe who could barely make out what the two are saying, heard Abby exclaimed. The light disappeared from her eyes.
'Is he saying I stink...? I did take a shower this morning, though.'
Phoebe wiped her face of any sadness as she pointed began introducing the surroundings to Rover.
"You see that? That's the Hocus Pocus. It loves interacting with people and children especially like its tricks. It is said that if an adult received a gift by it, they'll be able to forever live out their happiest memories in dreams... Ah."
Covering her mouth, Phoebe apologized.
"Sorry, I talked too much. I wouldn't want to hold much more of your time"
"Nah, I think what you said was quite fascinating. Is it like, a superstitious beliefs or has it been proven?"
"You're interested? That's great! To answer your question, it leans more towards superstitious beliefs. Since many people that interact with it seemed to have their day brightened, people at some point began to belief that the Echo was the trigger."
Rover's eyes moved towards the small tower in the middle of the time square.
"Is that the Nexus?"
Phoebe followed her gaze before responding, "Yes, but we'd prefer to call it the Genesis Nexus."
Rover nodded her head. "I see."
"So I just need to input my stuff through my Terminal right?"
"Yes, then you can start using common Echoes like a regular citizen."
They both walked closer to the Nexus as Rover brought out her Terminal.
Regular procedure happened as the Nexus voiced out, "Seek Salvation from where it all began."
Abby, still hiding behind Rover, asked a question. "...What does that mean?"
What does 'Seek Salvation from where it all began' mean?
Rover agreed with his question as she waited for an answer.
She began explaining what it meant, about the way the first Ragunnesi discovered the land of Rinascita, and the Sentinel that had helped them revitalize from the Lament than had taken over their previous land.
"This legend is widely known to all Ragunnesi. Although we're not certain how the true beginning of Rinascita happened, many scholars has tried their hands on trying to uncover it."
Rover glanced at Abby, Abby also looked at Rover.
They both nodded at each other before simultaneously asking the same question.
"So, where and when can we meet the Sentinel?"
[Wuthering Waves]
"Fua..."
Katsuri yawned as her body stretched on the bed.
Cracking her neck a couple of times, she rubbed her eyes.
It took her a while before she could finally make out where she had woken up.
A white room. Although it wasn't empty, it was very plain.
Right next to her bed, there was a small shelf which had become a makeshift table with a small lamp on it.
There was also a closet in front of her.
The door leading to the outside wasn't that far off either.
The window was opened, which had shown that she was indeed on the second floor.
It was an unfamiliar place.
Not thinking much, she simply walked over to the door, probably leading towards the hallway.
Opening it, she crack her knuckles before going down the stairs. 'Ah, that feels nice.'
The familiar living room appeared in her sight.
Surprisingly, she doesn't feel hungry nor thirsty.
Due to that, she didn't immediately go to the kitchen. Instead, she entered the restroom.
Going to the sink, she opened the tap.
Splash!
Katsuri wiped her face using her hands. But she didn't move away, she just stayed in the same position.
Her body was facing the mirror but her head was facing down.
It was only after a couple of minutes before she raised her head.
Through the mirror, empty eyes gazed at her.
The dark bags under them were not helping in making her look normal.
She hooked her cheek through her mouth using her finger.
Pulling on it, it revealed a white sets of teeth and a small tongue.
After a few moments, she let go.
She simply walked out the restroom, unbothered by her own unpresentable look.
After all, as long as she smiles, nothing would be given away.
