Chapter 52: The Obedient Little Fox

“Sorry for keeping you waiting.”

Chen Yin gently stroked her ears and spoke softly, “But Luo Luo has been very good, waiting patiently for me to return.”

“Because Young Master said so—to wait obediently here for you,” Luo Luo replied.

She raised her tearful eyes and choked up, “There were so many times I wanted to go look for you, but I was afraid you’d come back and not find me, so I just waited quietly for you all by myself.”

“I waited all the way until this morning when the master-servant contract finally sensed your presence… wuuu…”

Seeing the little fox’s teary, pitiful expression made Chen Yin’s heart soften. He comforted her gently, “Alright, don’t cry anymore. Didn’t I bring you something delicious? Look.”

As he spoke, he raised a skewer of candied hawthorn berries in front of Luo Luo.

But Luo Luo didn’t even glance at it. Her voice was still soft as she said, “Luo Luo can be less greedy. Can Young Master promise not to leave Luo Luo behind again?”

“Please… don’t ever do this again—leaving me all alone, worrying about you without knowing if you’re safe…”

For the first time, Chen Yin saw Luo Luo ignore her favorite candied hawthorn. He realized she must truly be upset.

“…I’m sorry.”

Chen Yin cleared his throat, then said seriously, “This time, it was my fault. So as compensation, I’ll agree to one of your requests. How about that?”

“Really?” Her ears perked up instantly as she looked at him with sparkling eyes.

“Of course.”

“Any request?”

“Anything.”

“Then…” Luo Luo wagged her tail and blinked mischievously. “These past few days, I’ve been listening to human storytellers, and I bought a very interesting book.”

“But Luo Luo can’t read it all by herself. Can Young Master read it to me?”

“Just like… back on the mountain.” Her little face turned slightly red, making her look incredibly adorable.

Chen Yin froze for a moment and asked in surprise, “That’s it?”

“Yes. If you do that, Luo Luo won’t be angry with Young Master anymore.” Luo Luo grinned, squinting her eyes playfully.

“Alright, I promise you.”

Chen Yin nodded. “Tonight, I’ll read you that story.”

“But for now, if you don’t eat, these treats will get cold.”

“Ah!” Only then did Luo Luo’s eyes light up, shifting her gaze to the pile of delicious snacks. She pounced on them like a hungry little fox, diving in and eating heartily.

“Mm-mm… so good…” she muttered, her words muffled by the food.

“Slow down, don’t choke. No one’s competing with you for it.”

Chen Yin watched as her cheeks bulged with food, her face full of innocent joy. He sighed helplessly.

“You little rascal.”

—Watching her devour the food like this…

Could it be that she hadn’t been eating properly these past few days?

The thought of this young girl, whose mental age was barely thirteen or fourteen, waiting all alone in an unfamiliar city for him filled Chen Yin with a strange sense of guilt.

Technically, he was her master. But still, she was just a little girl. Who wouldn’t feel sorry for her?

Luo Luo continued eating with gusto, while Chen Yin’s gaze shifted to the window.

Suddenly, he felt a faint stirring in his arms.

Narrowing his eyes, he turned to Luo Luo and said, “Take your time eating. I need to step out for a moment, but I’ll be right back.”

Luo Luo immediately stopped chewing, looking at him with a pitiful expression.

“Don’t worry.”

Chen Yin rubbed her head gently and reassured her in a soft voice, “I promised to tell you a story tonight. I’ll definitely come back.”

Luo Luo obediently nodded, her fluffy tail swaying gently behind her.

Chen Yin pushed the window open, glanced around, and then lightly floated out of the window.

After finding a secluded, deserted spot, Chen Yin put on a mask, and his voice became low and hoarse.

He took out a communication jade.

It was the one Yu Xiang had given him earlier.

“Your Highness the Saintess,” he said respectfully once the connection was established.

“I need you to mobilize all the demonic faction members in Xiang City to help me find someone.”

On the other end of the jade, Yu Xiang’s voice was cold and emotionless as she said, “Find me my senior brother.”

“Oh? Isn’t Your Highness the Saintess’s senior brother the one who caused some chaos in the Heavenly Beauty Summit?”

“You all seem to be quite well-informed,” Yu Xiang retorted subtly.

“Not at all. It’s just that the Your Highness the Saintess’s safety is of utmost importance. The sect, while reassured, cannot help but remain vigilant.”

Chen Yin responded smoothly, “As for your senior brother… did he return from the Tiantu Abyss?”

“That’s right.”

When she spoke of Chen Yin, Yu Xiang’s tone softened slightly, no longer as icy as before. “I need you to find his whereabouts and discreetly spread the word that I am waiting for him at the inn on the southern side of the city. Tell him to come to me.”

Chen Yin immediately understood and replied respectfully, “Understood, understood.”

“If there’s nothing else, that’s all,” Yu Xiang said and promptly disconnected the communication.

Chen Yin stared at the jade for a long time, deep in thought.

—The Heavenly Beauty Summit had concluded. Though not perfect, at least Xiang’er’s true identity had not been completely exposed.

Now, Luo Qiaoqiao and Senior Sister were investigating leads on Changli Palace, which would take some time. Since there was nothing pressing in Xiang City for now, he might as well continue probing the demonic faction and see if they had any deeper connections to Xiang’er.

Especially considering the incident at Wan Yun Mountain, where capturing a minor demonic faction underling had given him the seed of a plan.

When he returned to the inn, Luo Luo had nearly finished all the snacks on the table and was eagerly awaiting his return.

Seeing Chen Yin, she rushed up like a pet greeting its owner, wagging her tail. “Young Master!”

“Finished eating so soon?”

Chen Yin clicked his tongue, teasing her, “Raising you isn’t cheap. At this rate, I’ll go broke in no time.”

Luo Luo scratched her head sheepishly.

“No worries. Now that you’re full, we’ve got some work to do.”

Chen Yin lowered his voice and instructed, “Do you remember the demonic faction branch in Xiang City I had you investigate last time at Wan Yun Mountain?”

Luo Luo nodded proudly. “I remember it perfectly!”

“Good. I need to head to the southern part of the city. In the meantime, you’ll use your stealth skills to scout out the demonic faction branch and report back to me tonight.”

Luo Luo’s ears twitched. “Then, will you still tell me a story tonight?”

“Of course,” Chen Yin said with a smile. “Since I promised you, I won’t go back on my word.”

“Once the important work is done, I can even read you stories every night for the next few days.”

“Yay!”

Luo Luo cheered, her enthusiasm renewed as she leaped into the void with vigor.

Chen Yin smiled with satisfaction before turning to look southward.

—Alright.

It’s time to find Xiang’er.
