Chapter 17:
Chapter 17: Humble Love 17:
Zhang Ya stood in place, her face alternating between pale and flushed.
The humiliation and rage in her heart reached their peak at this moment.
The pointing fingers, scornful gazes from those around her—everything made Zhang Ya wish she could disappear into the ground.
“Mom, what are you doing? Get up!”
Zhang Xiaobao walked over quickly, his face flushed with embarrassment.
He had been watching from a distance and intended to approach once Zhang Ya arrived, but within moments, the situation had escalated.
“I don’t want to live anymore… My own daughter is ashamed of me… What’s the point of living…”
Seeing her son come over, Wang Fengxia gained more confidence and began to cry even louder.
But before she could finish her outburst, Zhang Xiaobao gripped her arm tightly.
“Mom, don’t forget why we’re here in the city!”
He lowered his voice, his eyes full of disdain.
If he didn’t have to bring Wang Fengxia and Zhang Laohan along, he would’ve come alone.
Once they got their hands on the city property, he’d make sure to send them off to live with his sister.
There was no way he’d take care of them.
If that idiot wanted to marry his sister, he’d have to care for his parents too!
Zhang Xiaobao’s thoughts swirled with calculation.
Wang Fengxia’s wailing abruptly ceased.
She stood up, brushing herself off as if nothing had happened.
“Let’s go. Take us to your place,” Wang Fengxia commanded with a dismissive glance at Zhang Ya.
“Come on, Sis, don’t be upset. You know what Mom’s like,” Zhang Xiaobao said with a conciliatory smile, his tone friendly.
But if one looked closely, there was no respect in his gaze toward Zhang Ya.
This was unsurprising; he’d never respected her.
Before Zhang Ya started dating Chen Nuo, he frequently berated and even hit her.
“Daughter, don’t be angry. Take us to your place,” Zhang Laohan stepped forward and added.
Zhang Ya took a deep breath, pushing down her revulsion.
“Follow me,” she said, turning and walking toward the nearby taxi.
“Mom, what are you doing? Didn’t I tell you before we came? We need to treat my sister well so she’ll be happy. Only then can we get the city property!”
Zhang Xiaobao whispered harshly, seeing Zhang Ya walking ahead without wanting to be seen with them.
“You’re right. What I did was wrong,” Zhang Laohan added, his eyes burning with greed at the thought of the city apartments worth at least 5 million each.
“I didn’t mean it, but she criticized our clothes right away. I couldn’t hold back,” Wang Fengxia muttered with a forced smile, though she still looked disgruntled.
“Let her say what she wants. Pride is worth nothing. Those city properties are what matter!” Zhang Xiaobao snapped impatiently.
“Got it, don’t worry, son. I know what’s important,” Wang Fengxia replied, her demeanor completely different around Zhang Xiaobao, full of deference.
“Good.”
Zhang Xiaobao fell silent but rubbed his forehead, sensing an inexplicable unease about their visit to the city.
…
“Get in!”
Zhang Ya reached the taxi, her expression icy as she addressed her family.
“Where’s Chen Nuo? Why didn’t he come to pick us up?”
Seeing that only the taxi driver was in the car, Wang Fengxia frowned, clearly displeased.
Zhang Xiaobao and Zhang Laohan also looked unhappy upon realizing Chen Nuo hadn’t come.
In their minds, Chen Nuo should’ve been there to greet them once he knew they were coming to the city.
But he wasn’t.
“Call that fool right now and tell him to get here!” Wang Fengxia demanded imperiously.
At home, the family had already planned to assert control over Chen Nuo from the start.
That way, they could manipulate him more easily and demand city properties.
Hearing Wang Fengxia, Zhang Laohan silently smoked without saying a word.
“Sis, he really should come. We came all this way, after all. Not picking us up is outrageous,” Zhang Xiaobao chimed in, looking at Chen Nuo with undisguised contempt.
“He’s at work and can’t leave. Let’s go; we’ll talk later.” Zhang Ya said irritably, instinctively hiding the fact that Chen Nuo had broken up with her.
“No, if he doesn’t come, I won’t get in!” Wang Fengxia exclaimed.
Zhang Xiaobao, however, eyed Zhang Ya closely, his gaze narrowing.
“Mom, let’s go for now. We can deal with this later,” he urged.
“Fine.”
With her son’s urging, Wang Fengxia suppressed her displeasure and climbed into the car.
But she resolved to make Chen Nuo pay for this slight when she saw him.
How dare he not come to greet her!
“Wait, you can’t all get in!”
The taxi driver stepped out and blocked Wang Fengxia.
“You can get in, but your parents can’t,” he said, looking at Zhang Ya.
“Why not?” Zhang Ya demanded, stunned.
“Why? How long has it been since your parents bathed? They’re covered in dirt. What if they mess up my car?”
“And you, all dressed up like that—what a joke,” the driver said, his voice dripping with contempt as he eyed Zhang Ya.
Her parents were in such a state, yet she had the audacity to look down on his taxi?
