Chapter 5: First act of violance (part 3)
On 30th October 1928,
The simon commission visited Lahore. The British government had set up this commission a year ago, and it was led by two lawyers, John Allsebrook Simon and Clement Attlee. The commission was supposed to look after India's laws and make changes to them. But the commission that was supposed to make laws that would affect every Indian, didn't have even a single Indian. That's why this commission was called White Man's Commission. Congress and Muslim league together decided that they would not support this commission.
As soon as this commission landed it was met with thousands of protestors, with the slogan, "Simon, Go Back."
Leaders like Lala Lajpat Rai and Madan Mohan Malviya led the protest against the simon commission. While British police officer, James Scott was tasked with providing security of the commission. James Scott was afraid that the protestors may resort to violence against the members of the commission. So he ordered a Lathi charge ( Baton Charge).
The police start hitting the crowd with sticks. Madan Mohan Malviya and Lala Lajpat Rai were attacked. Lala Lajpat Rai was brutally injured and 10 days later, he achieved martyrdom.
Bhagat Singh had his differences with Lala Lajpat Rai. Lala Lajpat Rai had suggested the two - nation - theory to have supported countries for Hindus and Muslims. Bhagat Singh opposed this. But when he heard that Lala Lajpat Rai was martyred, he couldn't tolerate this. With his companions, he decided that they had to revenge this, "Blood for Blood."
