Accelerator Vampire

Chapter 12: 12. Offer

The sun was slowly setting, casting a reddish tint across the sky. As evening approached, the air grew cooler. In the backyard of the farmhouse, four men were practicing.

Felix lay on the grass. He tried to get up, but a blow knocked him back down. "I didn't get up yet," he muttered. This time, Felix didn't try to get up from where he fell.

"In a real fight, your opponent won't wait for you to get up," John said irritably. "If you don't get up immediately-" Before John could finish his threat, Felix got up. John had been lecturing Felix for about half an hour. Felix regretted teasing John. He hadn't expected the old man to get so angry.

In fact, it was Maxwell who had really upset John, but Felix couldn't explain it. If he hadn't teased him, maybe the old man would have listened to him.

Felix took his position. As John approached, he tried to throw a punch, but John ducked and moved closer to Felix. Felix tried to kick, but John grabbed the leg that Felix had raised for the kick and knocked him off balance. Felix fell back to the floor.

Meanwhile, Axel and Maxwell sparred. Dodging Maxwell's punch, Axel grabbed Maxwell's arm and pulled him down. Even on the ground, Maxwell didn't give up the fight. While on the ground, Maxwell kicked Axel in the leg, causing him to fall. Maxwell then controlled Axel by pinching him from behind.

Axel struggled to break free but couldn't. Admitting defeat, Axel tapped Maxwell on the arm. Maxwell released Axel. Axel didn't get up, just looked at the sky. Maxwell shifted to a sitting position and joined Axel in looking at the sky. The reddish color in the air reminded them of blood.

Training matches between Axel and Maxwell were always competitive. One mistake meant defeat. This time Axel had lost. If he had been more determined, he would have won. Maxwell knew that.

Afterwards they went inside and showered. Dressed in clean clothes, Axel walked down the wooden stairs and looked around. He went out the front door and sat on one of the swings near the big table outside. Nightfall was approaching.

A short time later, John came out of the door and sat down on one of the chairs. He was tired from training. He didn't have the endurance he had in his youth. He put the bottle of wine he was holding on the table and sat down on a chair, putting his glass on the table.

He took a pack of cigarettes from his jacket pocket and lit one with a Zippo lighter. Even though Axel didn't like the smell of smoke, he didn't stop breathing. Vampires usually breathed reflexively, but Axel didn't stop even though he didn't like the smell of smoke.

As John smoked, he looked at the swing in the backyard. Tears began to stream from his eyes. Axel was silent as he watched John cry. John had told him the story of his life. The world was cruel and unfair to everyone.

After losing his family, Axel had lost his faith in God because while some lived in prosperity, others suffered in poverty. Even in times of hardship, his father remained faithful to God, but after the death of his family, Axel had stopped believing in God.

Even though he did not believe in God, Axel looked for someone to blame for their suffering. In this world, the wicked lived in wealth and comfort while the innocent suffered in poverty. The world was not fair. The God who made the world was not fair.

John's blue eyes met Axel's red ones. John gave a warm smile. "You have fulfilled Evelyn's dying wish."

Axel didn't understand what John was saying.

Seeing Axel's curious look, John began to explain. "Before she died, she asked me to make a few promises. One of those promises was that I would never leave you alone. She..." John struggled to speak. He always found it difficult to remember his wife's death.

Putting his hand on John's shoulder as he heard what John said, Axel said, "She's still here. She was always with you. She never left you alone. She wanted you to be happy. You told me, remember?"

John had said the same words to Axel. Your mother is always with you. I'm sure she never blamed you. She's proud of you, Axel. She always wanted you to be happy. John smiled as he remembered.

John opened the bottle of wine and poured some into his glass.

Soon Felix and Maxwell came out of the house. They had waited so as not to interrupt the emotional moment. They also sat down in the chairs.

John looked at each of the vampires sitting at the table. He had taken these children into his home and taught them about life. Now he felt like a father reunited with his sons.

Felix placed the radio he had brought on the table. Beautiful music played as night fell.

While John sipped his wine, the vampires just sat there. Vampires could eat and drink, but since they couldn't digest it, they had to vomit afterwards.

"John, come with us," Axel said. John had refused the offer the last time. Axel asked again.

John hesitated. All his memories with Evelyn were in this house. He had never left his home because he felt he would be abandoning his wife if he did.

While John hesitated, Axel got up to go to the RV. He opened the lock, went inside, and took a box from a drawer. After placing the box on the table, he sat back in his seat. Axel pushed the box over to John.

John opened the box. Inside was a necklace. John examined the necklace. When he opened the locket, he saw Evelyn's photo. John liked the necklace. He put it around his neck and looked at Axel. "Thank you." This gift meant a lot to John.

Axel had prepared this necklace so that John could leave home. When he wore it, he wouldn't feel like he was leaving Evelyn. Axel had never seen a man like John in the world.

Axel thought that love was not a good thing. When he saw John's situation, he decided to stay away from love.

As John admired the chain around his neck, he spoke. "When are we leaving?" John now thought he could go with them.

"Let's rest a bit first. Then we'll decide," Axel said. He didn't want to leave right away after being home for so long.
