The kids were allowed some minutes to choose and familiarize themselves with their weapons before they drew lots.

In the past months, the kids had been training hard with the weapons, especially with their weapons of choice. This session was, ideally, just more advanced training with a moving target (that could kill).

They were allowed to get up to two weapons or shields each time, and it would be up to them how to handle it. It could be a spare weapon, or it could be a complementary set like a sword and shield.

This was so the kids could get used to having limited resources and maximizing what they had. It would also, ideally, train their foresight—so that they would choose wisely.

Further, they did not dare team the kids up for now, lest they injure each other by accident, so each kid would be fighting monsters individually.

Sheldon was unlucky enough to pick the leading number. The lad went pale when he saw the #1 on his wooden stick. He gulped, looking at Sammy helplessly. "Can I… can I switch?"1

Sammy sighed, patting the young lad's head. "In the real world, there will be plenty of times you can't choose when to fight," he said. "It's better to get used to being ready at a moment's notice."

Sheldon pursed his lips, really unwilling. However, his sister had already paid for his tuition for the rest of his schooling years.

After some thought, he chose the bow and arrow in the end, which wasn't a surprise. No one expected him to prefer short-ranged combat.

However, because they had to go about this individually, this meant that Sheldon would still have to deal with monsters on his own, regardless of what weapon he used.

He gripped his weapon, the face of his sister passing by his head. He had also seen her kill monsters as well, and doing close combat, too!

He had observed how different she was now, and so were most people. Unlike him, even after so many months in Alterra, he was still a coward. He wanted to be stronger, too!

Sammy saw his expression and judged that he now seemed amicable to be thrown into monsters. Sammy got the assistants to open the gates to the monster corral, ushering the lad inside.

While Sheldon entered, Sammy joined the other spectators at the viewing deck about two meters above ground so they could easily see what was going on inside the large enclosure.

This enclosure was connected to the various 'cages' of the training monsters, and also had several 'terrain types' that the students could make use of.

There were rocks and some trees, and there was also soft soil. The students had been introduced to this area before, so it was assumed that they already had a mental map of where each area was.

The large play field could be divided into two parts by adding accordion fences that rolled up at the cranking of mechanisms, so there could be two exercises happening at a time.

It was quite advanced, actually, and only Alterra would be able to build such a thing to this scale outside of their territory walls.

Other than the fact that the fences were lined with metal grass, these monsters were also fed on the carcasses killed during training, so they didn't go hungry. Anyway, they would usually be killed, too, after a few days of training.

In any case, the enclosure was just outside the scope of the sentries, so even if the monster went berserk and somehow escaped, then they could just step back a bit and let the sentry handle it. They were outside the territory, anyway.

"Ready?" he asked and the others opened the gate and released one monster.

ROAR!!!

The monster bellowed and lunged towards him immediately.

The monsters would be weakened depending on the kid's own capabilities. However, it still wouldn't be completely paralyzed so it could still be dangerous.

In Sheldon's case, this was a level 2 Gnomon with one of its hid legs severally injured.

ROAR!!!

"Ahhh!" The young boy yelled as the monster lunged towards him. The boy gasped, sprinting elsewhere. The fighting enclosure he was using was actually quite big, nearly a thousand square meters in total, so it took him several seconds to reach the other side.

For the most part, the existing forest remained. If clearings were created during fights, they'd keep them. The earth users also placed hills, depressions, and small caves as well.

However, all Sheldon did was to hide behind these masses, barely avoiding the monster's attack by hiding behind rocks and trees. This went on for several minutes until Sammy had to take out his voice amplifier.

"Sheldon!! Did you forget about your lessons?" Sammy yelled. "We taught you better than that!"

Naturally, before letting the kids go directly against monsters, they went to a lot of classes at school.

They would be shown and taught theoretical knowledge about their weapons and fighting in general, they would be taught tactics, techniques, and so on.

They also had exercises using wooden versions of their weapons, making them spar with each other with increasing frequency. Basically, as long as they kept their heads on their shoulders, they would not be so helpless against weakened monsters with lower levels!

Sheldon flinched and gulped, shaking his head in an attempt to gather himself.

ROARR!

"AHHH!" he screamed, panicked again, running to the other side of the enclosure instead. He gasped when he saw the monster turn swiftly, running towards him again.

"Use your weapon!" he heard from the side and, by instinct, he used the bow—

To hit the monster in the head.

Plak!

"..."

ROAAR!

The monster roared, opening its wide jaws to eat the bow.

Crunch!

Sheldon really, really, wanted to cry.

Sheldon is Sheila's bro
