After Surviving the Apocalypse, I Built a City in Another World

Chapter 1439: Little Valors (Part 2)

"Wuuu… sister…" Sheldon cried, as he ran around again. Fortunately, he still had his second weapon, which he chose to be the spare bow.

He still wasn't able to use it though, because the monster would be at his heel whenever he tried to posture for a shot!

Sammy sighed, but he wasn't too disappointed. This was completely normal, especially for a child who had been relatively protected compared to others.

In Terran, most children would be handled with care. In Xeno, they were also relatively more protected than adults. After all, it was basically impossible to survive as a child without an adult, so those who were not protected were unlikely to have lasted this long.

Most of the time, the kid spent in Xeno was hiding inside a territory, how could he know how to handle monsters well? Handling these ugly and aggressive things with a clear head could not be accomplished with just killing one or two monsters, especially when the mind was still immature.

Kids like Horus, who seemed to have an instinct for these things due to the life they lived in Terran, were the only exceptions. He doubted most of the other kids would have a much better reaction than Sheldon's.

Anyway, fortunately for Sheldon, Sammy was an archer, so his tips were particularly useful for him.

"Ideally, you have the basic close fighting skills, so you should still have the sword ready to get pulled at any time," he said. "It's why we allowed two weapons.

"However, for now, you can just kite—reduce its health little by little while you avoid its attacks."

Kiting was the technique wherein a long-distance attacker would attack while maintaining distance from the opponent.

Of course, this was much more delicate than it sounded and required a lot of environmental awareness. Otherwise, the enemy could either catch up or they could even fall down while attacking.

"Kiting is an art," he said, holding up the voice amplifier. "You have to be able to understand your setting well as soon as you get there. You have to train not only your accuracy, but also your awareness."

These were taught at school, but they were difficult to apply in the end. Practicum was really essential, and it was something everyone who wanted strength had to go through—even if it was with gritted teeth.

Sheldon gulped and tried to do as he was told, remembering the lessons. Move, set-up, target, stabilize, and shoot.

Whoosh!

Whoosh!

Whoosh!

ROAARR!

For the next minute, he managed to take a few shots, and he sparkled when he saw two arrows actually hitting. Although neither was embedded on its skin, it still hurt the monster and caused it to bleed!

He could not celebrate for long, however, because the pain caused it to go berserk and its movements hastened. Sheldon once again panicked and lost his footing.

"Ahhhh!" The boy yelled as his leg was nicked. He managed to avoid another injury and jumped back, pulling out another shot.

It missed major parts, but it still caused injury… that made it even angrier.

ROAR!!!

On the platform, a new voice sounded. "Do you have to be so harsh on the kid?"

Sammy's eyebrows rose as he turned to the newcomer who joined him on the coach's platform.

"Eagle," he said, crossing his arms and looking at the man teasingly. "Came to check up on your brother-in-law?

Eagle cleared his throat and scratched his head. "Well, the wife is worried."

"Oh? So came here to ask me to loosen up?"

"No," he said. "Sheila knows better than to protect the lad too much. She just wants me to see how it goes, and maybe also serve as an extra insurance so that he wouldn't get too injured."

"That said… she really wanted to go, but I had to stop her due to her pregnancy," he said. This was outside the main walls, and his overprotective ass couldn't bear to let Sheila stand next to monsters.

He then blankly took out a phone from his space. It was feminine and had cute stickers, so Sammy knew it was Sheila's. Probably.

He started recording the battle with a relatively steady hand. The boy was really struggling and he flinched when his movements slowed down due to the pain in his leg.

Should he delete this footage?

Sammy helpfully placed the amplifier in front of Eagle. The sharp-featured soldier blinked, before bellowing through it.

"Sheldon! You can do it! You're braver than you look!" He yelled. "Your sister said that if you just believed in yourself, you'll be able to do it! Also, I'm videotaping you! Perform well!"

"Without her or your dad, you will be able to care for yourself!" he continued. "You gotta show it now that you're grown up! Show the world there's more the Sheldon!"

The young lad's eyes brimmed with tears mixed with terror and other things.

Sheldon ran and avoided the attack, using the trees as a hiding place.

Trees in Xeno were stronger and low-level monsters would not be able to take one down within a few hits. Otherwise, every time a monster mob passed through a forest, then clearings would've been made.

BANG!

Whoosh!

Whoosh!

While hiding behind trees, Sheldon shot his arrows while enduring the pain. This went on for a couple of minutes until he noticed how some trees had already been weakened. This was probably the setting for a previous fight, so some trees only needed a few more push before their trunks would succumb.

Sheldon was a meek person, but because he was so guarded about everything and worried about everything, his observation was also very good. He observed this little detail and moved places, making sure the monster would bump into the trunk at just the right angle.

BANG!

The tree fell down on the monster. Without further ado, he showered the monsters with arrows, targeting what he knew—from various lessons—were its weaknesses.

His accuracy, dexterity, and control still needed some work, but he was shooting close to the monster so most of his shots did land, weakening it more and more.

ROARRR!

It managed to escape the trunk after a few shots, but fortunately Sheldon managed to jump back in the nick of time before he got injured again.

Whoosh!

Squelch!

Then, one more shot and the monster finally fell.
