Chapter 644: Confrontation

Donnie knew why the other party had come, he just calmly said, "Let him in!"

Mobley walked in, full of hostility.

"Donnie, why grant those despicable and lowly blacks the same benefits as us? This is something neither I nor the people behind me will agree to. If you persist in doing this, we will teach those lowly blacks a lesson they will never forget!"

Donnie looked at Mobley indifferently and asked calmly, "Are you threatening me?"

Seeing Donnie's expression, Mobley's heart skipped a beat, and it was only then that he remembered who he was speaking to.

If it had been Nucky before, even if Mobley felt uneasy, he would have firmly asserted his position, because he knew that it wouldn't be easy for Nucky to go up against him and the Ku Klux Klan behind him.

But now, the situation was entirely different.

The man he was facing was Donnie, an even more powerful figure than Nucky. Donnie not only had the influence that Nucky had at his peak in Atlantic City, but he also possessed a formidable firepower that Nucky never had.

Although they regularly organized small skirmishes to suppress the black community, those encounters paled in comparison to the combat experience of veterans who had been through war. In battle, they would stand no chance against them.

Not to mention, Mobley was also making money through the Surf Hotel. With just one word from Donnie, he could lose everything he had.

"Dear Donnie, I was impulsive just now, please forgive my rudeness!"

It turned out that Mobley's belligerence only applied to powerless blacks. In the face of Donnie, he was still very obedient.

"I hope there won't be a next time for this kind of thing. I hope you understand that!"

Donnie said calmly.

"Yes!" Mobley nodded.

"As for what you just mentioned..." After suppressing Mobley's momentum, Donnie continued with a more earnest tone, "Mobley, you should understand, neither I nor Nucky want to grant those blacks the same benefits as us. But you must have noticed the situation in Atlantic City by now.

As our life in Atlantic City gets better and better, more and more blacks arrive here looking to make a living. Upon their arrival, they move into the North District and are accepted by its original residents.

The North District has now become the most populous district in Atlantic City. Therefore, sometimes we must consider their situation. We cannot allow anything to go wrong in Atlantic City because of this!"

Mobley said, "If anyone dares to stir up trouble, we'll just take care of them!"

Donnie laughed and said, "Do you think you can kill off all the blacks in Atlantic City? If they all die, who will do the rough manual jobs for us? Even without considering that, if they all were taken out, the whole United States would condemn Atlantic City over it.

You should know how much resentment our development in Atlantic City has stirred in many places. If anything happens in Atlantic City, they will surely take action immediately. Wouldn't that be giving outsiders satisfaction at our expense?"

At this point, Mobley also understood that Donnie himself did not want to give benefits to the blacks, but given the current public opinion, Donnie had no choice but to follow the popular sentiment and proceed in this way!

"So we really have no other options?"

Mobley asked unwillingly.

Donnie shook his head and said, "At least if these blacks make no mistake, if we do not grant them proper benefits, they will surely cause trouble!"

Mobley seemed thoughtful and said, "I understand!"

Donnie stood up and escorted Mobley out of his office, "Alright, leave these matters to us. You just take care of growing the Ku Klux Klan's operations in Atlantic City!"

After Mobley left, Donnie returned to his seat with a smile and resumed his work.

.

While Atlantic City was heatedly discussing the welfare issues of the North District, a shocking event happened that stunned everyone in Atlantic City.

The beach in front of the boardwalk, as one of the iconic attractions of Atlantic City, drew in everyone who visited to enjoy it, especially in the weather of June, which was exhilarating enough for playing in the water.

People who enjoyed the beach and sunshine during the day would leave and head back to their accommodations.

But the blacks of Atlantic City could only observe from afar and gather the courage to come here after there were no whites around.

This was the unwritten rule and law of Atlantic City!

But all rules and laws can be broken by someone!

And so, on this evening, something happened on the beach in front of Atlantic City's boardwalk that enraged all the whites in the city.

A white girl resting on the beach was teased and beaten by several young black men.

The girl's cries caught the attention of the patrolling policemen. By the time they arrived, the group of young black men had scattered.

The white girl was taken to the hospital!

One night was enough for news of the incident to spread and ferment throughout Atlantic City.
